CE 327 – Principles of Reinforced/Prestressed Concrete

Date: March 29, 2021

Problems:

1. Derive the equation for ultimate moment: Mu = φfc’bd2w (1- 0.59w)

Considering: ρ = wfc’/fy

2. A reinforced concrete rectangular beam 300mm wide has an effective depth of 460mm and is
reinforced for tension only. Assuming fc’ = 21MPa and fy = 345Mpa, determine the balance
steel area required.

3. A rectangular beam has b = 300mm and d= 490mm. Concrete compressive strength is 27.60Mpa
and steel yield strength is 276Mpa. Calculate the required tension steel area if the factored
moment is:
a) 20kn-m
b) 140kn-m
c) 485kn-m
d) 620kn-m.

4. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm and an overall depth of 480mm. The beam is
simply supported over a span of 5m. Steel strength is 415Mpa and concrete strength is 28MPa.
Concrete cover is 70mm from the centroid of the steel area. Unit weight of concrete is
23.50kn/m3. Other than the weight of the beam, the beam carries a superimposed deal load of
18kn/m and a live load of 14kn/m.
a) Determine the maximum factored moment of the beam.
b) If the design ultimate moment capacity of the beam is 280kn-m, determine the required
number of 20mmϕ tension bars.
c) If the beam will carry a factored load of 240kn at midspan, determine the required number of
20mmϕ tension bars.
