Engineering Mathematics (Code: Mat-350)

Due by 04/06/2020 Final Assignment: section 09 Maximum Marks: 30

Answer the following questions. Figure in the right hand margin indicates the full marks.
Detailed explanations are required for full credit. The plagiarized work will receive
a zero mark. Your handwriting should be legible. Write your answer on answer
scripts mentioning all information including Section, Semester, Name, ID No., etc.,
correctly. Upload the scanned copy of the answer scripts in a single pdf file in the
Google Classroom.

1. a) Explain the fundamental difference between the Fourier Series and Fourier Transform
using your own words. [5]
b) Find the Fourier transform f¯(k) of the function
(
sin(2t), −π/2 ≤ t ≤ π/2,
f (t)) =
0, otherwise

Identify the values of k at which f¯(k) is undefined. Hence, use L’hospital’s rule and direct
integration approach to evaluate the value of f¯(k) at these points.

2. a) The differential equation

y 00 − 5y 0 + 6y = 0; y(0) = 1, y 0 (0) = 4

can be solved either by using an exponential trial solution y = emx or by using the power
series solution method. Do it both ways and show that the results are same. [5]
b) Is there any singular point of the above DE? What is the radius of convergence of your
power series solution?

3. Solve the following system of equations using the method of elimination [5]
(
D2 x − 2(D2 + D)y = 5 sin t
x + Dy = 0

4. a) Find the Laplace transform of the first and second order derivatives of an arbitrary [5 ]
function y(t) such that L {y(t)} = Y (s) with y(0) = a and y 0 (0) = b.
b) Use Laplace transform to solve the IVP

y 00 − 4y 0 + 4y = 3 sin 2t, y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 1

5. a) If L {f (t)} = F (s), show that L {f (t − 5)u(t − 5)} = e−5s F (s), where is u(t − 5) is an
unit-step function. [5 ]

b) Wrie down the following function in terms of unit-step function

(
1, if 0 ≤ t < 1
f (t) =
−1, if t ≥ 1

c) Hence use Laplace transform to solve the DE

y 00 + 4y = f (t), y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = −1,

6. a) Write down the Fourier series for an even function f (x) such that f (x + 2π) = f (x). [5]
b) Find the Fourier coefficients of the function
(
1, if 0 < x < π
f (x) =
2, if π < x < 2π

Write down the first six terms of the series. Hence, write down the series for x = π/2.
