Semantics and Pragmatics A 2018
1. Make four sentences with hedges in 4 maxims (hedges quantitative, hedges
qualitative, hedge manner, hedges relationship).
2. Explain the meaning/purpose of the sentences that you make.

 Hedges of Quality
“I may be mistaken, but I thought she is a single parent now.”
The meaning of this sentence is that the speaker wants to convey the fact that
she is a single parent now. "I may be mistaken" is hedges of quality used for
minimizing the thread-of-face and being positive strategies. As we know, people
sometimes underestimate on single parents, so that speaker want to tell the fact
and make that person (she) still accepted by others.

 Hedges of Quantity
“Long story short, we started falling in love with each other”
the meaning of this sentence is that the speaker is in love with his partner. "long
story short" is the hedges of quantity that used for being more precise in
reporting result. The speaker wants to tell the conclusion of the topic they are
talking about without explaining in detail. The hedges are used to explain the
truth felt by the speaker and may be a representation of what has been said.

 Hedges of Relevance
“anyway, do you think she is prettier than me?”
the point of this sentence is that the speaker wants to know if "she" is prettier
than her. “anyway" is a hedge of relevance which is used to direct the
conversation to a particular topic so that their conversation does not go out of the
topic they have been talking about. I think this sentence aims to be negative
politeness strategy because in certain situations or conditions, the speaker
actually wants to cornered her which is the person she talks about (she). So that,
she is not accepted by the others.

 Hedges of Manner
“I’m not sure if this makes sense, but I dreamed you were riding a flying dragon”
The meaning of this sentence is that the speaker wants to tell his/her
unbelievable dream about “you” riding a flying dragon. “I’m not sure if this makes
sense, but..” is hedges of manner that used to being more precise in reporting
results. This hedge may present the true state of the speaker’s dream that
unbelievable but this state can be a representation of the state of the knowledge
under discussion.
