1.1 Key-Pad
The Enviro-Monitron is programmed by using a six-button keypad situated in front of the
apparatus:
• The UP-DOWN and LEFT-RIGHT arrow keys are used to move around in the Enviro-
Monitron menu on the screen. The program uses the UP-DOWN arrow keys to enter the
numbers representing the values to be programmed.
• To use the key-pad, key in the four-number password which gives the operator access to
the programming function on the screen. The operator can then key in the numbers as
required for modifying the set-up.
• Note that only the 1 2, 3, and 4 keys on the key pad are used to enter the four-number
password.
• The ENTER key has two functions:
• Enables the operator to choose a window on the screen. The beginning of the mode
displayed on the screen is indicated by the flashing cursor.
• When a programming mode is displayed on the screen, the operator can enter the value to
be programmed.
• The ESC key is used to exit the programming mode without saving changes to the
program

1.2 General Information

• The program menu is accessible on the 4 lines x 20 character LCD screen. When Enviro-
Monitron is started up, the first screen that appears shows the current values for oxygen
and temperature.
• The display shuts off the back-light after several minutes. The back-light will reappear as
soon as one of the buttons is touched.
• In navigating the menu, if there is no activity for two minutes, the display will open and
return to the first (date & time) screen.
• The program presents is divided in twelve screens, each one accessible sequentially with
the left-right arrows. Each screen has its own sub-menu, accessible with the up-down
arrows. Note that if the operator keeps going in one direction he/she will eventually return
to the first screen.
• The blinking of the screen indicates a state of alarm. One of the value parameters has
been exceeded (velocity, temperature etc.). When the operator touches one of the
buttons, only the value in the state of alarm will continue blinking.

• Press the ENTER key.

• Press vertical arrow keys to select the mode.
• Press the ENTER key to save the changes. Or
press ESC key to exit without saving any
changes.

MODE SELECT shows which control mode is active

The four possible modes are:

1- CONTINUOUS AIR: air valve at 100% without

nitrogen or oxygen. This mode is normally used
before starting an experiment (all parameters
programmed) when the user wants to keep all the
settings hold. Will generally result in an oxygen
concentration around 90-100% in the system.

Air valve opening: 100 %

Oxygen valve opening: 0%
Nitrogen valve opening: 0%

2- MANUAL MODE: Manual override of the

oxygen control. The target oxygen content of the
gas mixture injected in the column is manually
entered, and the gases (air,O2,N2) will be
injected accordingly. This mode can be used to
manually override the oxygen control loop, in
case of problem with the automatic control (e.g.
oxygen probe not functional)

For example:
If "0" for the level of oxygen in the biofilter, N2: 100% O2: 0% Air: 0%.
If "20.9" for the level of oxygen in the biofilter, N2: 0% O2: 0%, Air 100%.
If "100" to the level of oxygen in the biofilter, N2: 0%, O2: 100% Air: 0%.

Security (see mode 5 below) is deactivated

under MANUAL mode.

3 - AUTOMATIC: variable output of air, nitrogen

and oxygen controlled by closed loop according to
setpoint value (updated every minute).
IMPORTANT: NEVER use this mode if
concentrated oxygen is not available to the system.
Use AUTOMATIC W/O OXYGEN instead.

4 - AUTOMATIC W/O OXYGEN: variable output

of air and nitrogen controlled by closed loop
according to set point value (updated every minute).
Oxygen will not be used, so O2 saturation above
100% will not be possible. This mode must be used
ENVIRO-MONITRON USER’S GUIDE VERSION 7.12.5 12

when concentrated oxygen is not available to the

system.

5 – SECURITY: This mode is not user selectable.

This mode will automatically be activated if all the
following conditions are met:

• O2 level in the system either above twice the

set point or below half the set point (i.e,
[measured O2] > [2 X set point] or [measured
O2] < [set point / 2]
• O2 condition worse (further away from set
point) than it was 5 minutes ago.
• At least 15 minutes have elapsed since last
change to set point or control mode.
• Control mode is not in MANUAL mode.

The gas mixture is fixed at about 94% air and 6% O2.

Once activated, SECURITY mode will remain active
until manually changed.

1.7 Fourth programmable column: Water make-up

Nitrate, the end product of nitrification, is relatively non-toxic, except at very high
concentrations (over 300 ppm). The only means of reducing the concentration of nitrate in
the water in a closed aerobic circuit unit is to change a portion of the re-circulated water. The
Enviro-monitron can take automatic control over the water-replacement function in a unit
operated under closed circuit conditions. The water replacement is expressed as a percentage
of the total volume of the unit (filtration module and habitat module) per 24 hour day.

A number of parameters associated with the replacement of water can be entered into the
Enviro-monitron. Given these parameters, the Enviro-monitron then calculates the rate at
which the peristaltic pump operates. These parameters are:

1. The quantity of effluent water removed from the system by the effluent pump
(Window #2). A float-valve compensates for the water loss. This valve allows water
to enter automatically as the water level drops.

2. The total volume of water in the system (filtration module and habitat module)
(Window #3). This volume of water is established at the factory and should not be
changed unless the closed system is modified (e.g. if a tank is removed etc.)

3. The percentage of water that has to be replaced (Window #4). For example, if a
closed circuit contained a total water volume of 100 L, a replacement of 10% would
represent a replacement of 10 L every 24 hours. Thus, the total volume of the unit
would be replaced in 10 days.

1.8 Fifth programmable column: Photoperiod Control.

The Enviro monitron allows control of the photoperiod using LED (light emitting diodes) in front
of each aquarium. Thus, the dimming and brightening of the lights will occur gradually at the
set times, according to the type of photoperiod selected. In the case of the fixed photoperiod,
the operator will determine the time of dawn and dusk. This set photoperiod will be repeated
daily. In the case of the astral photoperiod setting, the hours of dawn and dusk will vary from
one day to the next, depending on the geographic location chosen (latitude, longitude and
time zone hour). Note also that the type of photoperiod used is the nautical, which simulates
the times of dawn and dusk when the sun is 12º below the horizon (rather than the civil times
of dawn and dusk which occur when the sun is 6º below the horizon, and are the times
usually reported in the media). Lastly, the operator can adjust the circadian photoperiod, thus
reducing or increasing the number of days in a year.

ATTENTION: applies for cabinet like structure only.

INTENSITY : YYY% Screen #1: The information window indicates the intensity of
