Multiplying and Factoring

TEKS:
A.10(D) (Supporting) Rewrite polynomial expressions of degree one and degree two in equivalent forms using the
distributive property
A.10(B) (Supporting) Multiply polynomials of degree one and degree two

ELPS:
4(f) Use visual and contextual support and support from peers and teachers to read grade-appropriate content area text,
enhance and confirm understanding, and develop vocabulary, grasp of language structures, and background knowledge
needed to comprehend increasingly challenging language.

Modifications/Differentiated Instruction:
(I provide handouts for lesson presentation and calculators for all students )

SPED/504:

M. Hailu: Allow for self-regulation of sensory processing- Reminders to stay on task - Tools to minimize distractions or to
help maintain focus - Extra time - Individualized structured reminders - Small group - Have student paraphrase or repeat
directions to ensure understanding - Teach time, paper, and project management skills - Visual, verbal, or tactile
reminders to stay on task.

C. Stone: Preferential Seating close to teacher - Teacher checks on agenda for homework/testing information - Clear and
concise instructions should be given - Chunked assignments with clear, concise directions - Redirection for
work/behavior - Small Group - Emphasize critical information - Individualized Structured Reminders - Provide immediate
feedback for social/behavioral supports - Provide notes: either teacher or peer produced - Visual, verbal, or tactile
reminders to stay on task.

Objective/Purpose:
Students will be able to multiply a monomial by a polynomial and to factor a monomial from a polynomial.

Content Vocabulary:
Review Content Vocabulary
•   coefficient
•   exponent
•   greatest common factor (GCF)

Review the terms greatest common factor (GCF), coefficient, and exponent. As needed, have students complete these
sentences using the polynomial 14x4 ‒ 7x3 + 49x2.

1. The ____________ of the third term in the given polynomial is 49. (coefficient)

2. The ____________ of the given polynomial is 7x2. (greatest common factor)

3. The ____________ of the first term in the given polynomial is 4. (exponent)

Materials/Resources:

Anticipatory Set: Hook/Prior Knowledge/Focus:

Solve It (5 minutes)

Lesson Components:
Key Concept (5 minutes):

•   Show Key Concept: Multiplying a Monomial by a Polynomial before Problem 1. Remind students that when using
the Distributive Property, they should pay close attention to the sign of each term.

Problem 1 - Multiplying Polynomials of Degree One (15 minutes):

Show students how to solve the problem. Ask the following questions to help build students' understanding. The
answers are in the Teacher’s Guide. Have students complete the Got It in the Student Companion.

Questioning Strategies:

•   What should you keep in mind when multiplying?

•   Are the monomials in ‒9x2 ‒ 7x like terms that can be combined? Explain.
GOT IT:   •   What is the exponent of n in the factor 5n?
Problem 2 - Finding the Greatest Common Factor (20 minutes):

You can use Practice K and Practice G for more practice.

Show students how to solve the problem. Ask the following questions to help build students' understanding. The
answers are in the Teacher’s Guide. Have students complete the Got It in the Student Companion.

Questioning Strategies:

•   Why use the factors 5 and x to form the GCF, but not 3?
•   How can you rewrite the terms x3 and x2 using repeated multiplication?
•   What variable factor(s) do all three terms have in common?
•   What constant factor(s) do all three terms have in common?
•   How does listing the prime factorization of each of the terms in the polynomial help you determine the GCF?
GOT IT:  •   How can you find the GCF of the terms in the expression?

Problem 3 - Factoring Out a monomial (20 minutes):

Show students how to solve the problem. Ask the following questions to help build students' understanding. The
answers are in the Teacher’s Guide. Have students complete the Got It in the Student Companion.

RTI: For students needing additional support, have them list all of the factors of each term in the polynomial. Then
have students circle the common constant factors. Encourage students to write each term in the polynomial as a
product of the GCF and the other factor. For example, 9x2 would be written as (3)(3x 2).

Questioning Strategies:

•   What monomial, when multiplied by 4x, has a product of 4x 2?

•   What monomial, when multiplied by 4x, has a product of ‒24x?
•   How can you use the Distributive Property to determine whether or not you correctly factored the polynomial?
GOT IT:  •   Why is the expression x(9x + 15) not the correct factored form for part (a)?

Evaluation & Practice

Lesson Check (15 minutes):

Have students work on “Lesson Check” to determine how well your students have mastered the lesson content.
