READING COMPREHENSION

LIFE IN NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is a multicultural country with friendly and easygoing people and with a lot of natural
resources. New Zealanders enjoy a balanced lifestyle; the economy creates an environment of work
opportunities. New Zealanders work hard at their jobs, employers recognize the importance of work
life balance (working hard and the time you spend enjoying).

New Zealand offers all sorts of options for choosing a home and lifestyle for your family because
you can spend more time with them, the world recognizes its education system as one of the best
and their healthcare is strong.

Young people grow up with easy access to outdoor sports, they ride horses, and everybody runs
along open beaches, a 90 % of population walks through native forest and the beauty of nature.

Families get great support from a range of public services thanks to the heavy government
subsidies. The rhythm of daily life varies with the days of the week, the seasons, and holidays and
according to a person’s age, family situation and the type of paid employment or education that they
undertake. There are work days and play days. Summer makes people to be far away from their
houses and winter pushes people staying indoor and keeping warm.

Holidays give a chance to ignore the clock, lie in bed, lounge on the couch reading, or watching
television, explore the internet, play games, meet friends or go swimming, biking, walking or skiing.

They don’t forget the earthquakes; they are always present in their lives because there are
earthquakes every day, but they don’t feel many of them.

Food costs lot (meat, cheese and vegetables) and the life is difficult if people don´t have a car and
want to know many places.

A native lizard says people can see easily the whales and dolphins at different times within the
year, a native person drinks wine because here it is fantastic.

If a person is a permanent resident, he or she has a lot of rights. New Zealand doesn’t have the
level of production of goods that some other countries do and it doesn’t have a good public
transportation system.

A person from Latin America misses family and friends, he or she doesn’t feel good because this
country doesn’t have festivals and there aren’t good places to dance. It doesn’t help people who are
depressive.

The culture is based on Maori Indigenous people and there is a European influence and migrants
bring different cultures, food becomes imaginative day by day with a classic style. You don’t
disrespect anything about Maori culture because you must know they are really serious with that.

Newspapers in New Zealand provide a high standard of reporting and all forms of media maintain
an online presence.

The traditional greeting is when people press their noses and foreheads and symbolizes the
passing of the breath of life. This is used on traditional ceremonies.

And finally you need to know that New Zealand people are high tolerant, so you don´t exhibit
arrogance or superiority and you will be always well received.

 Answer the following questions according to the reading.

1. What is a balance lifestyle in New Zealand?
2. What kind of options does New Zealand bring to people?
3. Why the healthcare is strong there?
4. How often do they have earthquakes?
5. Why is life difficult there?
6. Write a synonym from Native Lizard?
7. Why does this country offer bad conditions for a depressive person?
8. What kind of lifestyle does New Zealand have?
9. What characteristics does its culture have?

PROBLEMS NOWADAYS AROUND THE WORLD

POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD

Poverty is still a big problem in the world today, “developed” countries with strong economies
still have a significant number of people who are struggling to survive. According to UNICEF
around 22.000 children die due to poverty and 1.1 billion of people are not having access to
water and they are living without basic sanitation, electricity and the lack for resources for
proper health care are increasing nowadays.

Infectious diseases are causing the death of poor people around the world these years and
countries like India and China are contributing with 13% according to the statistics at the
moment.

The inequality causes the instances of losing values and crime is increasing based on the
feeling of injustice, besides, the circumstances are giving fewer options and education is not

arriving to everybody. Governments are thinking on their own interests and they are investing
on different things far away from the benefits of poor people.

We need to support programs like World Vision where they work hardly to eradicate poverty.
They are teaching how to care the earth, they are also giving information about good nutrition,
the importance of education and they are helping people to increase the productivity of their
contexts.

Answer the following questions:

1. What is world vision doing?

2. What does UNICEF mean?
3. What are the infectious diseases that cause the death of poor people?
4. What are governments doing?
5. Why does the percentage of poor people increase?
6. What is the objective of the reading?

READING COMPREHENSION

CHARITIES

When I visited England a few weeks ago in November, it was the weekend that Children in Need
was on TV, an entertainment programme dedicated to raising money for disadvantaged children in
the UK. It was a fun filled Friday night that involved a whole host of celebrities and performers who
sang, danced and made a fool of themselves for charity. That year we saw a number from the
musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a one-off “Doctor Who” special and they even had a
Club perform, all 7 of them, re-united for the first time in 11 years! It was amazing to sing along to
“Reach for the stars”, that situation brought back memories of my childhood.

But the best thing was the amount of money they raised. On that night alone it reached £32.6m!
That was an incredible amount of money!

That same weekend I visited the Tower of London, whose moat was filled with a sea of 800,000 red
ceramic poppies to represent all those who died in the First World War. It was a striking sight, that
really made you think about all those who sacrificed their lives for us. Sadly the poppies have all
been removed now but they have been sold for charity, with the funds, which were predicted to be
around £15 million according to the British Legion website, being split between various military
charities in the UK.

That same week Bob Geldof released Band Aid 30, a song featuring a number of big-name artists
like Olly Murs, One Direction and Bono (from U2) and went along the lines of “Do they know it’s
Christmas time at all” (maybe you know it?). These singers made this song for free, meaning all the
money from the sales of the song could go the victims of Ebola, not even iTunes was taking a cut.

All this got me thinking, have I seen anything like this whilst living in Italy? Well the answer is no.

In fact, one of my Italian friends was quite surprised by our generosity in the UK, commenting on
how many charity shops we have. These shops sell good quality second hand items that people
have donated such as clothes and books. I always buy my books from here because they are so
much cheaper! So you get a bargain whilst helping out a charity; everyone wins!

Whether this is just a British phenomenon I’m not sure, but I certainly didn’t realize that this was
such an important part of British culture. From its presence in every day life such as charity shops,
to special events like Children in need, the whole country gets involved!

CELEBRITIES AND CHARITY

Read the texts and be ready to participate in class with the information in the articles.

Colombian singer Shakira is famous about her beauty, hip shaking and her voice, but she also
works tirelessly for good causes. When she was just eighteen and starting to make money as a
singer, she decided to use that money to create the Barefoot Foundation, named after the children
who lived on the streets in her local community. The organization aims to provide an education for
poor and disadvantaged children with the hope of lifting them out of poverty.

She knows what it is like to have no money as, when she was seven her father´s jewellery business
went bankrupt. Her family had to sell a lot of their belongings, including her air conditioner and their
television. When she complained to her father about the heat with no air conditioner, her father took
her to see the "barefoot" children, who lived in the dirt, with tattered clothes and bare feet, and she
realized that many families had less than they did. This made a lasting impression on her. In April
2004, she was appointed the youngest ever UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

donate part of his weekly salary to a French Children's charity.

A DOG´S STORY

He’s a very happy dog, but his life used to be very different. Two years ago, when he was just a
puppy, he was living on the streets. He had wounds all over his body and he was drinking water
from the ground.

People scared him and he didn’t like it when a dog catcher picked him up. But that was when his life
turned around. He spent a month at the vet’s getting better and then he went home with Hazel, his
new owner. Now he’s probably the most fashionable dog in his neighborhood.

Answer the following questions:

2. How long was the dog getting better?
3. Who was Hazel?

A BUSY DAY

It was a busy day, the sun was shining and everyone was hurrying to work. Michael decided to take
a different route to college, and something caught his eye. A young puppy was limping along the
road. He looked very sick and he was starving.

Michael found him some food and water, but he couldn’t afford to adopt him because he was
supporting both himself and his younger brother through school. So he turned to his friends for help.
He posted a message on Facebook with a map of the dog’s location and asked everyone to share
it.

Lic. Mrs. MARITZA LACHE PIÑEROS English Teacher from Eleventh Grade 8
The message made its way where Geri picked it up. She contacted her friends in the Philippines
and found someone to take Jay to the vet.

Jay was suffering from mange, a skin disease that made him lose his fur. He was always scratching
because his skin was itchy, but not any more. Jay was adopted by Ninfa and just look at him now.
What a bundle of lovely white fur and what a happy dog!

TOYOTA MOTOR COORPORATION AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A
SMART CITY

Toyota Motor Corporation started a construction on a Smart city at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji,
about 62 miles from Tokyo.

The city, which Toyota called the “Woven City,” is expected to function as a testing ground for
technologies like robotic smart homes, and artificial intelligence. A starting population of about 360
inventors, senior citizens, and families with young children will test and develop these technologies.

These residents, who will move into the Woven City within five years, will live in smart homes with in-
home robotics systems to assist with daily living and sensor-based artificial intelligence to monitor
health and take care of other basic needs, according to the company.

The eventual plan is for the city to house a population of more than 2,000 Toyota employees and
their families, retired couples, retailers, and scientists. Toyota announced plans for the city at CES
(the biggest tech trade show in Las Vegas).

Called the “Woven City,” the development will feature pedestrian streets “interwoven” with streets
dedicated to self-driving cars, according to press materials. The city will be fully sustainable, powered
by hydrogen fuel cells.

The Woven City will function as a testing ground for technologies like robotics, smart homes, and
artificial intelligence, according to the company.

Toyota officially started construction on the city in a groundbreaking ceremony and plans to send
about 360 people to live in the Woven City to start. From there, it intends to gradually grow the
population to more than 2,000.

The first residents will be a group of roughly 360 inventors, senior citizens, and young families with
children, according to the company; these residents will move in within five years.

Lic. Mrs. MARITZA LACHE PIÑEROS English Teacher from Eleventh Grade 9
Residents will live in homes outfitted with in-home robotics technology as well as sensor-based
artificial intelligence to monitor their health and take care of their basic needs.

Toyota says it plans to integrate nature throughout the city with native vegetation and hydroponics, a
method of growing plants without soil.

They will design the city with three different types of streets: one for self-driving vehicles, one for
pedestrians using personal mobility devices like bikes, and one for pedestrians only.

Some critics say smart city developers should focus on the human aspect of the projects, not just
technology.

The city is still under construction with completion expected in 2022.
