SECTION A

Answer all Questions in section A

QUESTION 1 (30 marks)

. For the structure shown in figure 1, use the Portal Method to:

i. Draw the bending moment diagrams of the top floor beams AB and BC; (15 marks)

ii. Calculate the applied load F1 if the maximum bending moment in column EH is 30 k-ft.
(15 marks)

QUESTION 2 (30 marks)

For the beams shown in figure 2 determine the reaction forces and draw the shear and moment
diagrams using the moment distribution method. All elements have the same EI unless otherwise
indicated.

SECTION B

Answer all questions from section B

Question 3 (20 marks)

Draw the influence lines for Ay, Cy, Dy, Vb, and Mc for the beam shown in Figure 3 below,
using the Müller-Breslau Principle. Calculate the maximum absolute value of Mc when an 80KN
concentrated load moves across the beam.

Question 4 (20 marks)

For the beam shown below draw the influence lines

for Ay, Cy, VB and MB using the equilibrium method. Find the maximum
possible value of Ay if a 32kN/m distributed load and a
single 50kN point load may be placed anywhere on the beam.

Question 5 (20 Marks)

For the beam shown below draw the influence lines for Ay
Cy, MA and VB using the Müller-Breslau Principle.

Question 6 (20 marks)

Use the Cantilever Method to draw the axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams of
the three - storied frame structure loaded as shown in figure 4.

NOTE: All members have equal cross-sections

Question 7 (20marks)

For the non-sway Portal frame shown in Figure 5, determine the reaction forces and draw the
shear and moment diagrams using the moment distribution method. All elements have the
same Young Modulus of Elasticity, E. (20marks)
