Book 1 Unit 3

(听力材料)
(Text 1)
M: Why the long face, Sally? What could have possibly gone wrong?
W: At my first job interview? Plenty.
(Text 2)
M: Were you in Beijing on June 5th, Mary?
W: No, I arrived in Beijing three days later.
M: What a pity that we didn’t run into each other. I left Beijing on June 7th.
(Text 3)
M: Frankly, when I sit at the back, I can’t see the words on the board clearly.
W: I’m sorry, but I can’t change your seat because you are much taller than the others. Perhaps you
should look into buying a pair of glasses.
(Text 4)
M: I’ve been asked to pick up the guest speaker at the airport this afternoon. Do you know what he
looks like?
W: Oh, you’re going to meet Bob! Well, he’s in his sixties, thin, almost as tall as Yao Ming, and has a
beard.
M: OK thanks!
(Text 5)
W: What’s wrong, Tom?
M: I still have this pain in my back. The doctor gave me some medicine that was supposed to make me
feel better by now, but…
W: You mean you didn’t take it?
M: Oh, I took some of it, but the medicine is just so bitter.
(Text 6)
W: Do you have a favorite sport, Allen?
M: Oh, I love swimming and cycling. On Sunday mornings I have swimming practice for an hour, and in
the afternoons, I ride my bike for two hours, just around the city or along the country roads.
W: That’s great! You really get a lot of good exercise then. Where do you swim?
M: Mostly in the city’s sports center. So, what do you do in your spare time?
W: I love dancing. I have been going to a dance class at my college for the past three years. I usually go
to the Saturday morning class.
M: Sounds like fun.
W: Say, how about coming to my house for a dance party?
M: Sure. Tell me the time and I’ll be there.
(Text 7)
W: Hi, Bob. I haven’t seen you much recently. What have you been doing with yourself?
M: Well, I’ve been taking a course in computer programming for the past two weeks.
W: Really? That’s great. Where are you taking it?
M: It’s at another college that offers continuing education classes. It’s about three blocks away from our
college, just next to a large supermarket, so I usually eat something there for dinner and then go to
class.
W: Who’s the teacher?
M: Mr. Black — he’s a teacher at Shanghai Normal University.
W: He specializes in programming?
M: Yes, he’s really a programming expert. He’s been teaching computer programming for twenty years
now. He’s been helping me a lot — I can see myself making good progress day by day.
W: How long does the course last?
M: About two months. The class is over on July 12, but I plan to keep working on my programming
skills even after the class finishes.
W: That means you’ll be buying a computer soon?
M: You’re right. I’m planning to get a new personal computer in a month or so.
(Text 8)
M: Excuse me. I ordered my dinner about half an hour ago and it still hasn’t arrived. I really can’t wait
much longer — I have three classes in the afternoon.
W: I’m so sorry. One minute — I’ll go and check with the chef right now.
(A few seconds later)
W: Your order will be with you any second. Oh, here it comes. Boiled seasonal vegetables, steamed
dumplings stuffed with mushroom… and the spicy bean curd will be served quite soon.
M: OK. Thank you. Oh, it’s really delicious. My colleagues told me the food here was great.
W: Thank you. I really am very sorry for the delay. Can I offer you some juice free of charge as an
apology? Otherwise, we will give you a small present.
M: Thank you very much, but I don’t drink juice — it’s bad for my throat. I only drink water. Well, can
you give me a teddy bear? I can send it to my little brother.
W: Sorry, we don’t have that kind of thing. Well, then how about a discount?
M: Thanks, that would be great.
(Text 9)
W: Excuse me. Are you going to get this book?
M: Well, I need it for a class. It’s awfully expensive, but there are no copies left in the library.
W: Oh, we must be in the same class, “Modern East Asia”.
M: Yes, that’s the one, “Modern East Asia”. Were you there yesterday for the first class?
W: I sure was. Professor Robert really seems to know his subject, doesn’t he?
M: Yes, I took another course with him last semester and it was very good. He’s good at listening to his
students. Students can always express their opinions in class.
W: That’s a relief. I’m a biology major and I was a little uncertain about taking a history course.
M: I’m a history major, so this is a required course for me. I’m in a bit of trouble now, though, because
I’m not sure I can afford this book.
W: Hey, I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we share the cost and the book?
M: Sounds great. Do you live on campus?
W: Yeah, I live on the 10th floor of Butler Hall.
M: Perfect. I live on the 3rd floor of Butler. We should have no trouble sharing the book. I can bring it up
to your room right after I finish the assignment.
W: It’s a deal.
(Text 10)
American businessmen frequently use social situations to make business deals. One of the best
examples is the business lunch. Therefore, knowing how to conduct yourself at a business lunch is
often just as important as the business discussion.
For formal business lunches, it is wise to phone at least one day ahead to reserve a table. After you
have been seated and given a menu, your waiter will come and ask if you would like to order anything to
drink. Nowadays, it is quite acceptable to order a mineral water, a soda, or fruit juice, rather than wine.
After he has taken your beverage order, your waiter will leave you to make your food selection. It is the
host’s responsibility to discover whether or not his guests have any special eating habits. If, however, a
host does not ask, a guest should not announce that to everyone at the table. Instead, he should ask the
waiter about the ingredients of any dish in question. He should also have in mind a second dish he
might order, just in case his first choice does not meet his requirements. Usually, the host will allow his
guests to order first. Sometimes, a host may collect orders ahead of time and place them himself.
Napkins should be placed on your lap to wipe the corners of your mouth, especially when you are
having soup and salad. When you finish the meal, the napkin is then placed on the table beside the
plate.
