The pedestrian and forklifts

Pedestrians and forklifts colliding in the plant is a real hazard and high risk!!!

The pedestrian in the plant carries equal responsibility to avoid being hit by forklift traffic!!

Pedestrian rules:

1. Make sure you know where forklift activity is in your area.

2. Before turning a corner or walking out a door, STOP, and -out


for forklifts!

3. Pedestrians should give way to forklifts and not the other way around!

4. Ensure that you always wear your high visibility vest when working in high risk areas e.g.
distribution.

5. Forklifts are m o v i n g vehicles and should be treated with respect.

6. If you are new to the plant and not sure whether forklifts are operating in your area,

look out for safety signage :

7. The same rules that apply for pedestrians and traffic on the roads also apply to pedestrians and
forklifts in the plant.

8. NEVER come closer than a safe distance from the forklift, even when speaking to the driver!
9. Don’t EVER pass or stand underneath the elevated portion of a forklift, whether it is loaded or empty.

PEDESTRIAN/FORKLIFT ACCIDENT:

Injury: Bad bruising of left arm and thigh


Potential: permanent disability / fatality
Situation: both driver and pedestrian were
looking in different directions
Important!

All incidents and near misses involving forklift trucks and pedestrians must be
reported!!

• Reporting helps ensure that a record is kept of the factors that contributed, allowing changes to
be made to address the causes of the incident, and prevent further similar problems.
