 Gudang Garam Company

A. Company Profile

Gudang Garam cigarette company is one of the leading companies within the
cigarette industry in Indonesia that has been established since 1958 in the town
of Kediri, East Java. Until now, Gudang Garam has widely known both
domestically and abroad as a producer of high quality kretek clove cigarettes.
Gudang Garam products can be found in many varieties, ranging from SKL
(sigaret kretek klobot or corn husk-wrapped clove cigarettes), SKT (sigaret kretek
linting tangan or hand-rolled clove cigarettes, up to SKM (sigaret kretek linting
mesin or machine-rolled clove cigarettes). Indonesia with a population of
approximately 266 million represents one of the largest consumer markets in the
world with 66 per cent of adult men smoking

Employee welfare is a priority, from proper safety practices and health

facilities to training in leadership, management, clerical and technical skills
through a mixture of internal and external courses. Gudang Garam contributes
indirectly to the lives of about 4 million people comprising tobacco and clove
farmers, retailers and hawkers across the archipelago. The cigarette industry, in
which Gudang Garam is a leading player, is a major source of revenue for the
Government in excise duty.

Gudang Garam operates production facilities at two main sites each with its
own primary and secondary kretek manufacturing operations. The first site is in
the town of Kediri, where the Company was founded and home to Gudang
Garam headquarters, a busy regional commercial centre with a population of
over 290,000. The second site located in Gempol, East Java is 50 kilometres away
from Surabaya. Both sites ensure we are well positioned to meet future demand.
 The Company produces a wide range of kretek cigarettes including low tar
nicotine (LTN) variants, as well as traditional hand-rolled kretek. Gudang Garam
operates an in-house printing facility and seven subsidiaries engaged in
commercial operations:

 PT Surya Madistrindo, sole distributor of the Company’s products
 PT Surya Air, Galaxy Prime Ltd. and Prime Galaxy Ltd., providing non-
scheduled air transport services
 PT Graha Surya Media, engaged in entertainment services
 PT Surya Inti Tembakau, engaged in tobacco processing industry

Gudang Garam has a vision to be a Nation’s pride, as a leading and

B. Kretek Cigarette Production Process

The manufacturing of cigarettes, both SKL (sigaret kretek klobot or corn husk-
wrapped clove cigarettes), SKT (sigaret kretek linting tangan or hand-rolled clove
cigarettes, up to SKM (sigaret kretek linting mesin or machine-rolled clove
cigarettes), is divided into several stages, namely the preprocess, the core
process and the finishing or the final stage.

1. Pre-process is the processing production before arriving at the factory which

includes the process of planting tobacco and harvesting, cutting tobacco
leaves and drying processes to be sent to the factory.
2. The core process is the processing of raw materials by using 17 units of inter
alia machines made in Germany with the Hauni brand and Italy with the
Comas brand.
3. Finishing, namely cigarettes packed neatly and safely so that the taste and
aroma are guaranteed.

Production process R & D and Quality Control

Quality control is carried out at every stage of the production process, even
since tobacco is planted. Supported by an integrated computerized system, as
well as input from the research and development section that examines the
quality of raw materials to the accuracy of tar and nicotine levels, quality control
becomes a benchmark for the birth of quality products.

With this strict quality control, rejection is also carried out on every cigarette
which do not meet standardized quality standards. This quality control is also
supported by the research and development of the salt warehouse research and
development section covering 3 main focuses, namely high quality tobacco
seeds, tobacco planting technology and alternative production lines.

Distribution

Gudang Garam is distributed nationally to more than 450,000 outlets

through its three main distributions, namely PT Surya Jaya Bhakti, PT Surya Bhaki
Utama and Surya Kerta Bhakti.

C. Product Gudang Garam cigarette company

Since its establishment in 1958, this company has produced many variations of
cigarettes that are well known to the Indonesian people. The following is a list of
Gudang Garam cigarette brands:

1. Gudang Garam Family

  Gudang Garam Merah: is one of the typical products of this company.
This cigarette belongs to the SKT category without the filter which has a
distinctive fruity and spicy taste that is quite sharp.
 Gudang Garam Djaja: aimed at the middle to lower consumer market
due to its low price. This unfiltered SKT taste is similar to Gudang Garam
Merah with less intensity and added savory sensation.
 Gudang Garam International: marketed since November 3, 1979 made
with basic ingredients of high quality tobacco and cloves. Therefore, the
price of this SKM is also quite expensive. When the smoke is inhaled, this
filtered cigarette tastes like a mixture of berries and lychee and also gives
off a spicy and slightly sweet flavor.
 Gudang Garam Signature: launched around 2013 and is included in the
SKM Full Flavor category. This filtered cigarette has a fruity taste and a
strong spicy sensation but is still just the right intensity.
 Gudang Garam Signature Mild: an SKM cigarette with low tar and
nicotine content. This filtered cigarette has a sharp spicy intensity.
 Taman Sriwedari: although it does not bear the name Gudang Garam and
has a very different design, the flavor of the unfiltered SKT is still the
same as all the kretek products launched by this company.
2. Surya Family
 Surya Gudang Garam: claimed by this company as brand no. 1 in
Indonesia in the SKM Full Flavor category. This filter cigarette brand is
available in three packs, namely 12 and 16 sticks for regular packs and 50
sticks for cans.
 Surya Exclusive: marketed in 2013 is a premium SKM product from the
Surya brand line. What makes this unfiltered cigarette different is the
sweet sensation it gives when inhaled and the spicy tobacco taste that is
smoother.
  Surya Professional Mild: launched in 2009 and targets mild cigarette
consumers at an affordable price. This unfiltered cigarette has a
distinctive taste of this company with a lower intensity and a savory
sensation. This company claims that the Surya Professional Mild brand is
one of the popular low tar low nicotine (LTLN) SKM types in Indonesia.
 Surya Professional: is an SKM Full Flavor product that has been marketed
since the 90s. Cigarette products with this filter are an alternative for
young people who want to try SKM Full Flavor but with a smaller size
than usual. However, the distinctive taste of this company remains with
a fairly strong intensity.
3. GG Family
 GG Mild: issued by this company to accompany the Surya Pro Mild brand
for the LTLN cigarette market. SKM with this filter still carries the
distinctive taste of a mixture of fruit and spicy with added sweetness.
 GG Mild Shiver: SKM's hallmark is the menthol thread in the middle of
the cigarette. The presence of menthol thread on the filter gives a cool
effect when smoking this cigarette, but the spicy taste of the tobacco is
reduced.
4. Other Gudang Garam Cigarette Products
 Klobot Manis Kretek Cigarettes: this is the first kretek cigarette produced
by this factory. The processed tobacco wrapped in dry corn leaves is still
maintained as a tradition of enjoying kretek in Indonesia. This unfiltered
SKT is produced in two flavors, sweet and tasteless klobot.
 Gudang Garam Deluxe: is SKT made from the best quality chopped
tobacco and cloves. This brand of unfiltered cigarettes is sold in packs of
16 sticks with a gold colored wrap to show its exclusivity
