Part 1: Problem 4-30

The full-wave converter used as an inverter in Fig. 4-14 has an ac source of 240 V rms at 60 Hz, 𝑅 =
10 Ω, 𝐿 = 0.8 H, and 𝑉𝑑𝑐 = −100 V. The delay angle for the converter is 105°.
(a) Determine the power supplied to the ac system from the dc source.
(b) Estimate the peak-to-peak ripple in load current from the first ac term in the Fourier series.

Solution
Part a
The average bridge output voltage can be determined using Eq. (4-35).

2𝑉𝑚 2(√2 ∗ 240)

𝑉𝑜 = cos 𝛼 = cos(105°) = −55.92 V
𝜋 𝜋
The required output voltage can be determined using Eq. (4-36).
𝑉𝑜 = 𝑉𝑑𝑐 + 𝐼𝑜 𝑅 =
−55.92 = −100 + 𝐼𝑜 (10) → 𝐼𝑜 = 4.408 A
The power supplied to the ac system from the dc source is equal to the power through the resistor (since it
is the only dc element aside from the source).

𝑃 = 𝐼𝑜2 𝑅 = 4.4082 ∗ 10 = 194.30 W

Part b
The current amplitude for each term in the Fourier series is:
𝑉𝑛
𝐼𝑛 =
𝑍𝑛
Where 𝑉𝑛 can be estimated from the graph shown in Fig. 4-12 and 𝑍𝑛 = |𝑅 + 𝑗𝑛𝜔0 𝐿|

ENEE 4600 – Quiz 6

Figure 1: Fig. 4-12

In this case, 𝑛 = 2 since that is the first ac term (𝑛 = 1 is the dc term). From the graph, it was estimated
that 𝑉𝑛=2 /𝑉𝑚 = 0.83, where 𝑉𝑚 = √2 ∗ 240 V. Thus, 𝑉𝑛=2 = 281.71 V.
Solve for the impedance and current at 𝑛 = 2.
𝑍2 = |10 + 𝑗(2)(2𝜋60)(0.8)| = 603.27
281.71
𝐼2 = = 0.467
603.27
The peak-to-peak ripple can be determined using Eq. (3-36). Note that in this case, it will be 𝐼2 instead of
𝐼1 since we are looking for the affect of the ac term.
Δ𝐼𝑜 ≈ 2𝐼2 = 2(0.467) = 0.934 A

Part 1: Problem 4-35

A three-phase rectifier is supplied by a 240-V rms line-to-line 60-Hz source. The load is an 80-Ω resistor.
Determine
(a) the average load current
(b) the rms load current
(c) the rms source current
(d) the power factor

Solution
Part a
The average or dc value of the output voltage can be determined by Eq. (4-44).

3𝑉𝑚,𝐿−𝐿 3(√2 ∗ 240)

𝑉𝑜 = = = 324.114 V
𝜋 𝜋
The average load current is:
𝑉𝑜 324.114
𝐼𝑜 = = = 4.05 A
𝑅 80
Part b
The first ac voltage term is obtained from Eq. (4-45) with 𝑛 = 6, and the current is:
6𝑉𝑚,𝐿−𝐿
𝑉𝑛 = , 𝑛 = 6, 12, 18, …
𝜋(𝑛2 − 1)

6(√2 ∗ 240)
𝑉6 = = 18.52 V
𝜋(62 − 1)
𝑉6 18.52
𝐼6 = = = 0.2315 A
𝑍6 80
0.2315
𝐼6,𝑟𝑚𝑠 = = 0.164 A
√2
This and other ac terms are much smaller than the dc term and can be neglected. Thus, the rms current is
approximately the same as the average load current since the ac terms are small.
𝐼𝑜,𝑟𝑚𝑠 ≈ 𝐼𝑜 = 4.05 A

Part c
The rms source current is obtained using Eq. (4-41).

2 2
𝐼𝑠,𝑟𝑚𝑠 = (√ ) 𝐼𝑜,𝑟𝑚𝑠 ≈ (√ ) 4.05 = 3.31 A
3 3

Part d
The output power is:

𝑃𝑜 = 𝐼𝑜2 𝑅 = 4.052 ∗ 80 = 1312.2

March 5, 2021 4
ENEE 4600 – Quiz 6

The power factor is:

𝑃 𝑃𝑜 1312.2
pf = = = = 0.95 = 95%
𝑆 √3(𝑉𝑠,𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝐼𝑠,𝑟𝑚𝑠 ) √3(240 ∗ 3.31)

Part 1: Problem 4-42

The six-pulse controlled three-phase converter of Fig. 4-20a is supplied from a 480-V rms line-to-line 60-
Hz three-phase source. The delay angle is 50°, and the load is a series RL combination with 𝑅 = 10 Ω
and 𝐿 = 10 mH. Determine
(a) the average current in the load
(b) the amplitude of the sixth harmonic current
(c) the rms current in each line from the ac source

Solution
Part a
The average output voltage can be determined by Eq. (4-47).

3𝑉𝑚,𝐿−𝐿 3(√2 ∗ 480)

𝑉𝑜 = cos 𝛼 = cos 50° = 416.667 V
𝜋 𝜋
The average load current is:
𝑉𝑜 416.667
𝐼𝑜 = = = 41.67 A
𝑅 10
Part b
The amplitude of the sixth harmonic voltage can be determined by Eq. (4-45).
6𝑉𝑚,𝐿−𝐿
𝑉𝑛 = , 𝑛 = 6, 12, 18, …
𝜋(𝑛2 − 1)

6(√2 ∗ 480)
𝑉6 = = 37.042
𝜋(62 − 1)
The amplitude of the sixth harmonic current is:
𝑉6 𝑉6
𝐼6 = =
𝑍6 |𝑅 + 𝑗𝑛𝜔𝑜 𝐿|
37.042 37.042
= −3
= = 1.50 A
|10 + 𝑗(6)(2𝜋60)(10 ∗ 10 )| 24.731

Part c
Since the sixth harmonic and other ac terms are much smaller than the dc term, these currents can be
neglected. Thus, 𝐼𝑜,𝑟𝑚𝑠 = 𝐼𝑜 = 41.67 A

The rms source current is obtained using Eq. (4-41).

2 2
𝐼𝑠,𝑟𝑚𝑠 = (√ ) 𝐼𝑜,𝑟𝑚𝑠 ≈ (√ ) 41.67 = 34.02 A
