LO1:

Human Resource Management:

Human Resource Management also known as HRM is a term that defines the concept of managing
and handling the employees in an organization, the main functions of HRM are recruiting and hiring,
training, motivating, developing and rewarding the employees.

Purpose of HRM.

The main purpose and objective of HRM is to manage the talent and skills of the employees
appropriately in order to fulfil the objectives of the organization.

The HRM functions performed by Four Seasons:

 recruitment.
 development of employees.
 training of employees.
 benefits and rewards to the employees.
 strategic management.
 HR professionals
 Laboure relations.
 Ensuring safe environment for the employees.

Workforce Planning:

Workforce planning is an essential element for the four seasons hotel because the employees would
generate good results only if they will feel comfortable in the given environment. Four seasons hires
the right people for the right jobs in order to ensure quality performance by the employees. Four
seasons makes sure that the employees are happy in the company so that they would willingly work
for the betterment of the company.

Recruitment and Selection:

There are two sources of recruitment used by four seasons.

1. Internal Recruitment
2. External Recruitment

Internal Recruitment: Four seasons considers internal recruitThis has many advantages, one big
advantage is that the employees are already aware of the organization’s rules and policies so there is
no need for training and orientation. The employee’s previous record is also available. Internal
recruitment had also increased the morale of the employees working in the Four seasons hotels.

External Recruitment: Four seasons practices external recruitment when they have to hire someone
from general candidates who are not already a part of four seasons. External recruitment can be
easily done via internet as it would not cost anything. Four seasons gets many applications by
advertising and many students also complete their internships from four seasons.

Diversity.
Four seasons has a very diverse workplace and hires people belonging from different ethnicities and
statuses. There is no favouritism or nepotism practiced in the four seasons and all kinds of people
are welcomed warmly by the organization.

Recruitment process.

Four seasons follow a long recruitment process that is divided into different steps.

Step-1 Planning of the employees.


Step-2 selecting the suitable candidates.
Step-3 evaluating the candidates.
Step-4 Screening of candidates.
Step-5 Interview of the candidates.
Step-6 Selection of the suitable candidates.

Development and Training:

After the selection, the employees are introduced to the company by conducting an orientation and
the employees are informed about the organizational ethics and policies. they are also trained to
generate effective and efficient results.

Performance Management:

Four seasons pays special attention to the performance management of the employees and provides
targets to the employees which they have to achieve. The performance of the employees is teste on
the basis of the target achievement and then they are dealt with accordingly.
Reward System:

Four seasons knows how to reward its employees. The employees are kept motivated by four
seasons in a very different way. the employees are treated like the customers once in a year so that
they can experience the comfort that they are expected to provide to the customers. After
experiencing the comfort, themselves, the employees are then in a position to perform according to
the requirement and it also makes the employees happy. Four seasons also provides other benefits
and rewards to their employees based on their performance.

LO2:

Models of development.

The effectiveness and efficiency of the employees is analysed and evaluated by using different
models. These models help in investigating and analysing the effectiveness of the employees. The
main agenda is to perform in a way that would be benefitting to both - the employee and the
organization. These models help the organization in achieving these goals.

Following are the main training models.

 The Kirkpatrick models.


 The Philips ROI model.
 The Brinkerhoff models.
 Anderson model.
 Kaufman's model.

The effectiveness of these models can be assumed by the fact that four seasons considers the
reaction of the employees and it pays due attention to the feedback given by the employees as well
as the employers and they also charge low costs for the training sessions.

The workplace design of four seasons also offers handsome rewards to the customers as they
reward the customers based on the quality of their work and if an employee adds in to the
productivity of the company, the employee is rewarded with an increment. these rewards result in
high attendance of the employees and the employees become more interested towards achieving
the goals of the organization.

Need of Training:
four seasons spends the most on the training of the employees because they believe that the well-
trained employees will generate happy customers. It is extremely important to train the employees
as the trained employees become aware about the expectations of the organizations and how they
have to abide by the rules and regulations of the organization. when an employee is new to an
organization, he or she might feel alien to the culture and in such a situation, training proves fruitful
as the employees become familiar and develop a sense of identity with the organization. Four
seasons informs the employees about the induction, job, promotions and requirements set by the
organization.

Four seasons trains its employees by making them experience the requirements. they make the
employees believe that this is the right place for them and they train the employees in such a sense
that they treat the organization as their own and do their best to generate positive results for the
organization. Four seasons believes that happy employees will generate happy customers and
hence, they focus on the training of their employees to ultimately, satisfy their customers.

Reward and benefits.

Four seasons provides both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards to its employees in order to motivate
them to do better. The rewards offered by four seasons includes the following.

 Health Insurance.

 Vacations.
 Free lunch and snacks.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

We can assess the importance of motivation by analysing the practices of four seasons in the light of
Maslow's hierarchy of needs framework.

The Maslow's hierarchy of needs has divided the 5 mentioned needs into three broad categories.

Basic Needs.

The basic needs include physiological and safety needs.

Physiological needs.

The physiological needs include the basic needs of food, water, shelter and clothing. Four seasons
take care of these needs by providing shelter to the employees and giving them free food and snacks
to keep them motivated for the day.

Safety needs.

The safety needs include the assurance that the employees will be safe and secure in the
environment. Four seasons provides them the insurance and takes all the precautionary measures to
ensure the clients safety. Especially in the times of Covid-19, four seasons is taking care of all the
SOP's to fulfil the safety needs of their employees.

Psychological needs.

The psychological needs consist of love/belonging needs and esteem needs.

Love and belonging needs.


Love and belonging needs include the affection and love from the relationships, friends and family.
Four seasons pays due attention to these needs by not only allowing but also sponsoring the
vacations of their employees and letting them spend some time as customers in the hotel.

Esteem needs.

Esteem needs help in increasing the morale of the employees by providing them with a sense of
accomplishment. Four seasons fulfils the esteem needs of their employees by giving them certain
rewards and benefits.

Self-fulfilment needs.

Self-fulfilment needs involve the self-actualization needs. these are achieved when an individual
reaches his or er maximum potential. At four seasons, this is done once the employee retires as they
have served as much as they could.

LO3:

External Factors:

The external factors control the organization from outside.

1. Work force availability:

This factor mentions the availability of labour in the market, which mainly depends on the
unemployment of Labour, qualification of Labour and the skills of labour. The organization may face
difficulty in choosing the right and skilled candidate from the market, which they need for their
particular position. The organization may face a challenge in finding the right candidate if the
candidate they want is not present in their geographical area. Four seasons hotels have all the staff,
which fulfil the criteria of job description, but in case if someone left the job or they have to hire new
staff, they might face difficulty in choosing the right person or the right position, as now days there
are a lot of workforce available in the market. Therefore, to choose the right and skilled one will be
tough challenge for human resource department.

2. Laws by the government:

States laws and procedures for the organization are one the major external factor that can affects
the human resource management decision making process, because they have to keep in mind the
laws and regulations while hiring, training, compensating, health related laws and motivating their
employees. If they failed to do so in anyway their organization can face a hard time as it can be
sealed or sanction against the organization. Four seasons hotels are following almost every rules and
procedure made by government and they train and hire their employees by keeping the laws and
procedures in their mind.

3. Qualification:

This factor indicates the external danger that if majority of students started to choose the same
career path it will be difficult for other types of organizations to hire the skilled employees as not
many of them will be available. For example, if majority of the students choose to become doctors
and engineers than organizations like hotels, restaurants, schools will face a problem in hiring their
employees. Four seasons hotels will not face this factor because now days more of a youth is going
towards fields like management and marketing etc.

4. Relation to the economy:

If the economy of the State is going well this factor will not much effect the organization but if the
economy is going in recession then the organization has to face many issues especially the Human
Resource Management Department because then they have to take decisions according to the
condition of the economy, they have to lay off their certain staff. Four seasons hotel is situated in
USA and the economy of USA is very strong so according to me they will not be facing any type of
economic factor. But we have to keep the recent pandemic condition in our minds. Due to the
circumstances of covid-19, the economy of USA may slightly fall in future. So, if it falls then the
Human Resource Department of Four seasons hotels have to make some big decisions with respect
to this external factor.

5. Advance Technology:

As the world is growing very fast and because of that many new and advanced technologies have
been introduced in the world. However, some parts of the world are highly advance in technology
like USA and China but some parts of the world are behind in the race of advancement in technology
like Pakistan and India. So, while hiring or training the employees the Human Resource Management
Department of an organization has to look that the people that they are hiring and training are fully
aware of the advance technology or not because if they are not then the organization may face
challenges from their competitor’s and may fall back in the race. As Four seasons hotel is located in
the country, which is in the list of advanced technology countries so their merits are high, they have
to choose people who have command in the technologies.

6. High competition:
To be successful in any business the organization has to know who are their competitors and should
keep an eye on their every move. While hiring, training and motivating the employees the human
resource management department has to look carefully at those candidates who has the ability to
tackle the competitors of the organization. The competitors or Four seasons hotels are Marriott,
Hyatt and Peninsula.

Internal factors:

These are the factors that are controlled by the organization.

1. Mission:

The mission of four seasons hotel is to create the credibility of the organization in the sight of the
customers by rendering services that are up to the mark and making sure that if a customer visits
once, they come and pay a visit again. Four seasons not only pays attention to the customers but
also to its employees as the employees also play a major role in the success or failure of an
organization.

2. Marketing tactics:

This factor includes that if the organization wants to develop a new product, new strategy or wants
to enter in a new market the Human Resource Management has train or motivate the existing
employees according to their new marketing strategy or they have to create the new sales team for
this this purpose. Four seasons hotel segments its new services on basis of its unique environment.
They provide bundle of offers and other complementary services like Spa, Gym, Hygiene factors and
many more so they train their employees according to their marketing strategies.

3. Growth stage:

If the growth rate of an organization is going high and the organization is earning profits then Human
Resource Management Department will make decisions to provide more fringe benefits to the
employees, improvement in the health insurance of employees and giving them bonuses and
moreover due to this they will able to hire and train more employees. But if the organization growth
rate is going down and the organization is not earning much profits then the Human Resource
Management Department will make decisions to reduce the benefits of the employees and to lay off
some of its staff. Four seasons hotel is the organization whose growth rate is going high so its Human
Resource Management Department is making decisions according to that.

4. Operational Planning:
This factor includes the addition of new technology and other new systems within the organization.
So, due to this the Human Recourse Management Department has to train the employees to make
them aware of new system and hire more employees who already are aware of new system and lay
off those employees who are not able to get through the new technology. Four seasons hotels train
their employees and hire more employees who are aware of news things going in the world.

5.Financial Strategies:

For training the employees the Human Resource Department have to set the financial budget that
weather they can afford the training by outsourcing or they have to train the employees within the
organization. This factor is link with the stage of growth factor it the organization is doing good then
the budget will be high and good training can occur but if the organization is not doing good, they
have to do some comprise in their training session. Four seasons hotel are gaining good money so
they are training their employees at a larger level.

6. Organizational Culture:

Every organization has its own internal culture, rules and beliefs. In addition, every member in the
organization has to follow it. Therefore, Human Resource Management Department has to select the
candidates who they think and adjust and are able to fit their organizational culture. The
organizational culture of Four seasons hotel consists of Hospitality, Integrity and Leadership.

Why are employee relations important?

For an organization, especially the one dealing in hotel industry, should pay attention to employee
relations because it is essential for the companies to maintain good relationships with their
employees and when the relationship with employees is good in a company, the employees will
treat the organization as their own and do their best to save the organization from any harm in
present or future. Moreover, in case any employee leaves the organization, they would help the
hotel by generating a positive word of mouth if the employee relations were kept positive. Hence,
employee relations play a vital and essential role in building the image of the company.

Employment Legislation:

The employee legislation proposes the concept of the rights of the employees as all employees have
their rights and these rights must be fulfilled by the organization in order to maintain the retention
of the employees.

Equality. Every employee should be given equal
opportunity according to his or her skills to
work on a post which they deserve there should
be no discrimination among the employees and
moreover, men and women should be given
equal opportunity to prove them self and earn
a position. Human Resource Management
department has to give every one equal
opportunity to prove them self and give them
the jobs that they deserve. Four seasons hotel
gives equal opportunity to their employees and
give the jobs to the employees who deserve
them weather it is a man or a woman.

Abiding by the rules. Polices or rules which are taken by organization


to remove discrimination among those people
who has already suffered from this in past. The
human resource management department
should motivate their employees do counselling
of their employees which will help them to get
out from their past bad experiences. Four
seasons hotel motivate their employees and
boost up their morel
Issues related to sexual harassment. Giving bad sexual remarks or inappropriately
touching someone in the work environment.
Men and women both face these types of
problems in the work place especially women.
So HRM department should fire those
employees who are the cause of this problem.
Four seasons hotel until now has no case of
sexual harassment.
Punctuality. Some rules relate to time and working hours.
Holding the employees forcefully and asking
them to do overtime is not allowed. So, for this
purpose rules are made. Four seasons hotel
have specific hours and shifts of work for their
employees no one is over burden.
Wages and Salaries. Anything that a person gets in return of doing
work or a specified work. For example, salary.
Human Resource Management Department
should fix the salary or wages with employee by
viewing their work. Four seasons hotel give
wages and remuneration to the employees
according to their work.
Working environment. Everything that relates in a working
environment. For example: Job hours, Physical
aspects and Responsibilities. Four seasons hotel
have proper rules and regulations according to
the working conditions of their organization.
Corporate relationships. Relationship of workers who share same types
of skills and interests. The Human Resource
Department train and motivate the employees
in such a way that they create good type of
relationships with each other. The employees
of Four seasons hotel have good type of
relationship with each other.
Health and safety Objectives related to health and safety
insurance of employees especially for females.
Human resource management department has
to set these benefits according to the growth
level of the organization. Four seasons hotel
provides many benefits to their employees like
health and safety insurance especially to
women working there are giving maternity
leaves, vacation leaves, security and protection.

the HRM department of the Hotel. The selection criteria are a long process that it begins with the
planning of the employees. Then comes by making a pool of applicable candidates, then comes the
stage where the applicable candidates fulfil the application forms for the job, the fourth step is
screening out the candidates and the last step is to interview the candidates and selecting the
candidates. The candidates are selected upon the qualifications and skills.

Workforce Planning: It is the measurement of the performance of the employees. Four seasons
hotels measures in such a way that each employee is tracked with the performance of his/her in the
work.

Training and Development: This process promotes the moral of the employees. Four seasons hotel
spends a lot on the training of their employees.

related to the achievement of goals and objectives set by the Four seasons hotels. The HR managers

and efficiently. The managers play an important role in recruiting and firing people. The goals and
objectives set by the Four seasons hotels can be fulfilled by the good HRM system. It includes hiring
