I. INTRODUCTION

In connection with studies in the safety of fast r e a c t o r s , it is


n e c e s s a r y to calculate the e n e r g y yield and explosive force of a v a r i e t y
of hypothetical n u c l e a r a c c i d e n t s .'-^'^/ A valuable analytical technique for
calculating such incidents was developed by Bethe and T a i t , w ) and since
modified by J a n k u s . ' ^ ' ^ / To achieve an analytic solution, however,
v a r i o u s simplifications and approximations were r e q u i r e d , with consequent
reduction of a c c u r a c y and applicability. A n u m e r i c a l solution, employing
high speed digital c o m p u t e r s , was needed to improve upon the a c c u r a c y
available from the analytic solution and to provide a m o r e flexible compu-
tational method. To gain this end m o s t efficiently, the Argonne National
L a b o r a t o r y a s k e d for and was g r a n t e d the full cooperation of the Los
A l a m o s Scientific L a b o r a t o r y . R. B. L a z a r u s , a s s i s t e d by M. B. Wells,
drew upon Los A l a m o s e x p e r i e n c e in the field of coupled n e u t r o n i c s -
h y d r o d y n a m i c s c a l c u l a t i o n s to devise a p r o g r a m r e a s o n a b l y well suited
to A r g o n n e ' s n e e d s . They c o l l a b o r a t e d closely with J. M. Cook, D. Okrent,
and D. Satkus of ANL in the debugging of the original p r o g r a m . As o p e r a t -
ing e x p e r i e n c e was gained at ANL, some refinements in the sensitive con-
t r o l a p p a r a t u s of the p r o g r a m w e r e introduced at ANL, to provide i m p r o v e d
a c c u r a c y and m o r e efficient use of the computing m a c h i n e . The p r o g r a m
has not been fully optimized in e v e r y s e n s e , however, and a reworking
should m a k e p o s s i b l e further i n c r e a s e s in efficiency. The utilization and
a v e r y rough outline of a s i m i l a r computing p r o g r a m have been given by
Stratton, Colvin, and Lazarus,*' ^ but no details of the code w e r e p r e s e n t e d .

Modification of Ax-1 to p e r m i t the use of other equations of state


is under study. A s p e c i a l v e r s i o n designed to p e r m i t a study of the e r r o r s
introduced by c e r t a i n a s s u m p t i o n s in the analytic technique is d e s c r i b e d in
Appendix E, a s Ax-1 '.
The p r e s e n t a t i o n to follow includes a v e r y g e n e r a l outline of the
p r o g r a m , a s e m i - d e t a i l e d flow d i a g r a m which e m p h a s i z e s the physics and
control a s p e c t s of the calculation, and then a detailed flow d i a g r a m and l i s t -
ing of the p r o g r a m (which is w r i t t e n in F o r t r a n ) . Explanatory notes a c c o m -
pany the d i a g r a m s .

Following the notes on the p r o g r a m , m a s t e r l i s t s detailing the r o l e s


of the s e n s e s w i t c h e s , s e n s e lights, p a u s e s , and stops a r e p r e s e n t e d . The
operating i n s t r u c t i o n s a r e then given, followed by a s a m p l e problem., in-
cluding detailed information on input data.

The t h e o r e t i c a l d i s c u s s i o n has been kept p r i m a r i l y in the a p p e n d i -


c e s , and is g e n e r a l l y in outline f o r m with r e f e r e n c e s , r a t h e r than in full
exposition.
II. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
Given a s p h e r i c a l l y s y m m e t r i c , s u p e r - p r o m p t c r i t i c a l s y s t e m , the
p r o g r a m computes the variation in time and space of the specific energy,
t e m p e r a t u r e , p r e s s u r e , density, and velocity. As a function of time it
computes the reactivity (in the form of alpha, the i n v e r s e period), the
power, the total energy, and the position of the boundaries of the various
shells into which the s y s t e m has been subdivided. All delayed neutron
effects a r e ignored, and no allowance is made for t r a n s f e r of heat by
conduction or radiation. The input information includes the initial r e -
activity or g e o m e t r y , the initial velocities and t e m p e r a t u r e s of the m a s s
points, the composition and disposition of m a t e r i a l s , the appropriate
equation of state c o n s t a n t s , and the m i c r o s c o p i c neutron c r o s s sections.

For calculational p u r p o s e s the s p h e r i c a l a s s e m b l y is divided into


a number of hypothetical s p h e r i c a l shells or m a s s points. The neutronics
of this s y s t e m is calculated in conventional fashion, using the S^^
method,(5>6,7) thereby providing a power distribution a c r o s s the radial
network, as well as the alpha of the s y s t e m .

F r o m the neutronics calculation one goes to the thermodynamics


and hydrodynamics portion to calculate the variation of power, t e m p e r a t u r e ,
p r e s s u r e , density, and velocity with t i m e . One may c h a r a c t e r i z e the o v e r -
all a r r a n g e m e n t by m e a n s of the following block d i a g r a m .

The calculation p r o c e e d s initially like the usual Sj^ calculation.


After computing a v e r a g e c r o s s s e c t i o n s for each of the s p h e r i c a l s h e l l s ,
in the m i x t u r e code, the p r o g r a m p r o c e e d s either to a calculation of alpha
(= — ^ ) for the specified configuration, or to a scaling of the r e a c t o r r a d i i
to provide the alpha originally specified. Before proceeding to the h y d r o -
dynamics the code also computes kgff for the initially converged configura-
tion, if so r e q u e s t e d .

The n e u t r o n i c s p o r t i o n of the p r o g r a m i s always done in the S4


a p p r o x i m a t i o n . It supplies to the succeeding p o r t i o n s of the p r o g r a m the
alpha c o r r e s p o n d i n g to that specific configuration. It also supplies a
r e l a t i v e power d i s t r i b u t i o n , to be u s e d in assigning the i n c r e a s e in e n e r g y
within each s p h e r i c a l shell or m a s s point, while this configuration r e m a i n s
a reasonable approximation.

The p r o g r a m p r o c e e d s into the hydrodynamic and t h e r m o d y n a m i c


p o r t i o n s . F o r one or m o r e s h o r t t i m e i n t e r v a l s , At, alpha i s c o n s i d e r e d
to r e m a i n constant while the power v a r i e s as e . F r o m the p r e s s u r e
g r a d i e n t s in the s y s t e m the a v e r a g e a c c e l e r a t i o n s of the m a s s points a r e
computed and, h e n c e , the new v e l o c i t i e s at the end of a t i m e i n t e r v a l .
T h e s e , in t u r n , lead to the new r a d i a l positions of each shell boundary at
the end of a t i m e i n t e r v a l . The solution is p e r f o r m e d in a L a g r a n g i a n
coordinate s y s t e m , i . e . , the m e s h is embedded in the m a t e r i a l , and
follows it along throughout its m o t i o n .

During the t i m e i n t e r v a l e n e r g y is added to the s y s t e m (the a v e r -


age power t i m e s At) and t h i s is d i s t r i b u t e d among the s h e l l s in a c c o r d with
the p r e v i o u s l y calculated fission d i s t r i b u t i o n . By allowing for the work
done by or on a shell in expansion or c o m p r e s s i o n , the net change in i n t e r -
nal e n e r g y is computed, and f r o m the i n t e r n a l e n e r g y a new p r e s s u r e and
t e m p e r a t u r e a r e obtained. In the Ax-1 p r o g r a m , the r e l a t i o n between
p r e s s u r e and t e m p e r a t u r e h a s been taken to be l i n e a r , n a m e l y

The v a r i o u s coefficients a r e allowed to v a r y from shell to shell, but no
p r o v i s i o n is made for mixing s e v e r a l s u b s t a n c e s within a shell to generate
a v e r a g e values of t h e s e coefficients, a s with c r o s s s e c t i o n s .

The t h e r m o d y n a m i c equations a r e solved using an i t e r a t i v e p r o c e -


d u r e , guessing the n e w p r e s s u r e at each m a s s point to be the old p r e s s u r e
for the f i r s t i t e r a t i o n . The s o - c a l l e d viscous p r e s s u r e , a m a t h e m a t i c a l
p r o c e d u r e devised by von Neumann and Richtmyer (see Reference 8 and
Appendix C) is included to p e r m i t t h e r m o d y n a m i c and hydrodynamic c a l -
culations in the p r e s e n c e of a steep shock front. Hence, the total p r e s s u r e
is the sum of the hydrodynamic p r e s s u r e , Pp^, and the synthetic v i s c o u s
pressure, P^.

When c a l c u l a t i o n of the t h e r m o - and h y d r o - d y n a m i c changes during


the t i m e i n t e r v a l At is complete (a hydrocycle), a s e r i e s of t e s t s a r e run,
and the p r o g r a m either p r o c e e d s -with another hydrocycle or goes back to
the n e u t r o n i c s calculation.

To control the pace of a p r o b l e m , the code continually e x a m i n e s


the magnitude or r a t e of change of c e r t a i n c r u c i a l p a r a m e t e r s , and v a r i e s
the At of a h y d r o c y c l e or the n u m b e r of h y d r o c y c l e s per neutron cycle
accordingly. This l a t t e r n u m b e r begins at unity and is allowed to build up
g r a d u a l l y if the f o r c e s p r e s e n t a r e not changing alpha too rapidly or m o d i -
fying the density of a m a s s point r a d i c a l l y . When the power v a r i a t i o n in a
h y d r o c y c l e , or the change in alpha between n e u t r o n c y c l e s , gets so l a r g e
as to damage the a c c u r a c y of the solution, the pace of the calculation is
slowed a u t o m a t i c a l l y - or stopped in e x t r e m e c a s e s .
III. LIST O F SYMBOLS AND DEFINITION O F TERMS

The p r o g r a m is w r i t t e n in F o r t r a n , forcing a symbolic notation


c o n s i s t e n t with the r e q u i r e m e n t s of the F o r t r a n s y s t e m and not always
identical to c u s t o m a r y p h y s i c a l u s a g e . Hence, a dual list of symbols
follows, that on the left c o m p r i s i n g the F o r t r a n symbols in alphabetical
o r d e r . T h e r e is g e n e r a l l y an a s s o c i a t e d physical symbol next to it, t o -
gether with a t r a n s l a t i o n or definition of the p a i r . In the explanation which
follows, the physical symbol will g e n e r a l l y be used.

The s y s t e m of units u s e d in the calculation is somewhat different


from that conventionally u s e d by the r e a c t o r p h y s i c i s t , so a b r i e f d i s c u s -
sion i s given.

In this sequence the l a s t two alphas a r e compared to see if alpha is


changing too slowly or too rapidly between s u c c e s s i v e Sn calculations. If
the difference is v e r y small, N54, the number of hydrocycles per neutron
cycle, is i n c r e a s e d by one. This number s t a r t s at unity and slowly builds
up during a typical b u r s t where a step function of reactivity is i n s e r t e d at
v e r y low p o w e r . The p r o g r a m then sends the computation to O r d e r 90 50 to
begin a hydrocycle. If the difference in alphas, compared to the m a x i m u m
alpha encountered, exceeds 7)3 but not 3r) 3, the hydrocycle begins unless
the o p e r a t o r had decided, based on observation of the output, that Ns4
should be reduced. In this c a s e he t u r n s on (or d e p r e s s e s ) Sense Switch
No. 5, which r e d u c e s Ns4 by one before p e r f o r m i n g the h y d r o c y c l e . If
3r)3 is exceeded, Ng4 is reduced by one and the c o m p a r i s o n is again m a d e ,

In this sequence a c r i t e r i o n for stability of the calculation is c o m -


puted which is designed to prevent the generation of excessively high
changes in density per hydrocycle. The c r i t e r i o n , W, will be examined
l a t e r in the p r o g r a m . The controls then ask a s e r i e s of questions d e -
signed to e x e r c i s e a control on the r a t e of change of alpha per neutronics
cycle during the peak of the b u r s t . Not wishing to keep Ng4 s m a l l during

Sense Light No. 4

At O r d e r No. 2005, if the b u r s t has gone through its peak and has
r e a c h e d a condition of negative alpha and low power, s e n s e light No. 4 is

If alpha b e c o m e s negative after having been positive, and if the


total energy shows no change or a net d e c r e a s e d u r i n g the h y d r o c y c l e ,

Tape No. 6 should be printed off-line under p r o g r a m c o n t r o l .
Tape No. 5 should be saved if r e s t a r t i n g the p r o b l e m f r o m a dump
i s anticipated (see Appendix F . 2 ) . Neither tape has an end-of-file
on it.

Restart Procedure:

To r e s t a r t a p r o b l e m f r o m a dump, follow the s a m e p r o c e d u r e a s


for a new p r o b l e m with the following exceptions:

1. Tape No. 5 should contain the d u m p .

2. Input data c o n s i s t only of a title c a r d and an IRCNBR c a r d c o n -


taining the niimber of the dump f r o m which r e s t a r t is d e s i r e d .

Running Time:

X. SAMPLE PROBLEM

A. Input Data

The specification of the p r o b l e m will be made h e r e in t h r e e


different f o r m s , all equivalent. F i r s t , a set of n o t e s , as might be p r e -
p a r e d by a physicist will be p r e s e n t e d . The s a m e problem will then be
shown on the s t a n d a r d input s h e e t s in slightly m o r e cryptic fashion.
Finally, the s a m e data will b e l i s t e d on the input sheet used by the c a r d
puncher in a form s i m i l a r to that in which it is printed out.

A few g e n e r a l c o m m e n t s p r e c e d e t h i s p r e s e n t a t i o n . It i s f i r s t
noted that the m a s s point I = unity is always r e s e r v e d for the c e n t r a l point,
R = 0, and the first r e a l r a a s s point and the f i r s t n o n - z e r o r a d i u s c o r r e s -
ponds to I = 2.

It i s noted that c r o s s sections a r e stored in b a r n s , n e c e s s i t a t -


ing the use of different " d e n s i t i e s " in the n e u t r o n i c s and hydrodynamics
equations, a s was d i s c u s s e d p r e v i o u s l y in the section "Detailed Flow
D i a g r a m and E x p l a n a t o r y N o t e s . " It i s also n e c e s s a r y that m i x t u r e s be
specified a s atomic f r a c t i o n s , P^, w h e r e 2 P^^ = 1.

It is noted that in the section " P r o p e r t i e s of M a t e r i a l s " a m a -


t e r i a l should be l i s t e d only once, even if it r e a p p e a r s as one m o v e s
outward r a d i a l l y .

The size of the v a r i o u s convergence and c o m p a r i s o n c r i t e r i a


specified h e r e i n a r e subject to r e v i s i o n in a c c o r d a n c e with the needs and
p e c u l i a r i t i e s of the p r o b l e m . They g e n e r a l l y r e p r e s e n t a c o m p r o m i s e b e -
tween the need for a c c u r a c y and the d e s i r e to m i n i m i z e the machine t i m e
consumed.

EPSR, EPSA, and EPSK a r e the convergence c r i t e r i a for the


v a r i o u s t-ypes of Sn c a l c u l a t i o n s . Running t i m e will be p a r t i c u l a r l y s e n s i -
tive to EPSA, since t h i s n u m b e r c o n t r o l s the o f t - r e p e a t e d alpha calculation.
E T A 2 l i m i t s the m a x i m u m fractional change in power p e r h y d r o c y c l e .
Once set, it i m p l i e s an i n v e r s e r e l a t i o n s h i p between the initial alpha and
the initial At. Unless conditions dictate o t h e r w i s e , it is r e a s o n a b l e to
choose the l a r g e s t initial At which s a t i s f i e s the E T A 2 t e s t .

AtMax. N P , N P O F F , and N P O F F P do not d i r e c t l y affect a c c u -


r a c y and, h e n c e , a r e somewhat a r b i t r a r y , depending on the wishes of the

The on-line p r i n t - o u t for the complete p r o b l e m is included


h e r e i n . F i r s t , a complete r e p r o d u c t i o n of the input data is printed, in
exactly the s a m e a r r a y as it is p r e s e n t e d to the c a r d p u n c h e r s . Since a
calculation of kgff was r e q u e s t e d , this n u m b e r is printed, followed by the
initial total kinetic energy, total i n t e r n a l energy and initial m a x i m u m
radius.

At t i m e equal to z e r o , a s h o r t p r i n t - o u t is m a d e , consisting of
T i m e , Qp, P o w e r , Alpha, At and W. As the calculation p r o g r e s s e s ,
s i m i l a r s h o r t p r i n t s a r e r e p e a t e d following each Sn calculation. Dumps
a r e noted as they o c c u r during the p r o c e s s .

When a "long" p r i n t - o u t i s in o r d e r (NH = 0 mod Np) f i r s t the


total energy, the kinetic energy and the checks on the energy computation

to p e r m i t infrequent o n - l i n e , long p r i n t s , coupled with frequent off-line,
long p r i n t s . The l a t t e r a r e dumped on tape and a r e available for off-line
p r i n t - o u t on s e p a r a t e equipment, if needed.

DETAILS OF THE VJ-OK-1 TEST

Before the addition of the V J - O K - 1 t e s t to the p r o g r a m it was o b -


s e r v e d that in the typical p r o b l e m having a step function reactivity input
at z e r o t i m e and low power, NS4 would build up appreciably by the t i m e
high power and the accompanying shutoff m e c h a n i s m w e r e r e a c h e d . As a
r e s u l t alpha would change c o n s i d e r a b l y from S4 calculation to S4 c a l c u l a -
tion during shutoff. Since alpha i s held constant between such neutronic
calculations, some e r r o r in the t i m e v a r i a t i o n of power would r e s u l t .

It was d e s i r a b l e that Ns- be l a r g e before the b u r s t to c o n s e r v e m a -


chine t i m e . A m e a n s of reducing its size at the beginning of the b u r s t was
needed. It was decided to obtain the n e c e s s a r y signal by observing p , the
t i m e r a t e of change of the r e a c t i v i t y i n s e r t e d per unit time by the feedback
mechanism. When the r a t i o - ^ b e c a m e l a r g e , alpha would s t a r t changing

POSSIBLE VARIATIONS IN THE PROGRAM - A x - 1 '

F o r A x - 1 , a simple form of the equation of state was chosen, with


the explicit intent of making modifications t h e r e i n s i m p l e to acconnplish.
F o r e x a m p l e , another s i m p l e equation of state would be that employed by
Bethe and Tait,'-^) p = (y-^)p^int' w h e r e i n a d i r e c t calculation of t e m p e r a -
t u r e is b y p a s s e d , and a different dependence of p r e s s u r e on density r e s u l t s .
Considerably m o r e e l a b o r a t e equations might also be utilized. Work is con-
tinuing in this a r e a to d e t e r m i n e that form which m i g h t be m o s t s a t i s f a c t o r y
for p r o b l e m s in fast r e a c t o r safety.

One modification of Ax-1 has a l r e a d y been m a d e . It has been c u s -


t o m a r y in p r e v i o u s analytical calculations to m a k e a p a i r of p a r t i a l l y c o m -
pensating a s s u m p t i o n s , for s i m p l i c i t y of analysis.(-^z F i r s t , during the b u r s t
alpha was held constant up till the t i m e sufficient r e a c t i v i t y had been i n s e r t e d
by the shut off m e c h a n i s m to balance the input r e a c t i v i t y exactly. This p r o -
c e d u r e kept the power r i s i n g too fast. Secondly, the energy developed in the
b u r s t was computed up to t h i s point of r e a c t i v i t y b a l a n c e , neglecting that
portion g e n e r a t e d while the power fell from its peak during the time of n e g -
ative alpha. To check the effect of t h e s e a s s u m p t i o n s , Ax-1 was modified
so that it followed the c o u r s e of the explosion in the above m a n n e r . The
power distribution at z e r o t i m e was u s e d as that valid for computing the
distribution of e n e r g y . The S^^section was allowed to go on computing new
a l p h a s , but they w e r e used only to t e r m i n a t e the calculation when a < 0. The
r e c o m p u t e d fluxes and alphas did not e n t e r the hydrodynamic calculation.

Ax-1 D U M P - T A P E CONSOLIDATION ROUTINE

If many Ax-1 dunnp tapes a r e saved in anticipation of r e s t a r t s , the


accumulation of t a p e s can p r e s e n t p r o b l e m s . In o r d e r to have the dunnps
available and yet avoid keeping a l a r g e n u m b e r of t a p e s , a routine to c o m -
bine s e v e r a l tapes into one was w r i t t e n . This routine copies the dumps
from individual p r o b l e m s onto one m a s t e r dump tape, checking both the
tape r e a d i n g and writing p r o c e s s e s . C a r d s for this routine a r e not i n -
cluded in the Ax-1 deck.

F o r a new p r o b l e m , the dumps a r e n u m b e r e d consecutively


s t a r t i n g at one. The n u m b e r of dumps on tape #5 at the t i m e the p r o b l e m
is t e r m i n a t e d is equal to the l a s t dump nunnber p r i n t e d in the on-line output.

F o r a p r o b l e m r e s t a r t e d from dump n u m b e r M, (but not from the


consolidated tape), additional dumps a r e m a d e on tape #5 following dump M
and n u m b e r e d consecutively s t a r t i n g at M + 1. T h e r e f o r e , the total n u m b e r
of dumps on tape #5 at the t i m e the p r o b l e m is t e r m i n a t e d is still equal to
the l a s t dump n u m b e r p r i n t e d in the on-line output.

F o r a p r o b l e m r e s t a r t e d fronn the consolidated tape the dump


n u m b e r (IRCNBR) specified m u s t be the n u m b e r of the d e s i r e d r e c o r d on
the consolidated t a p e , which is u s u a l l y not the dunap n u m b e r of the specific
p r o b l e m . T h e r e f o r e g r e a t c a r e m u s t be taken in keeping t r a c k of the l o -
cation and the n u m b e r of r e c o r d s on the consolidated t a p e . Reading in the
dump r e p l a c e s IRCNBR with the dump n u m b e r of the specified p r o b l e m .
After the dump is completely r e a d in from the consolidated tape, another
blank tape should be set at 5 and the consolidated tape r e m o v e d to avoid
d e s t r o y i n g dumps from other p r o b l e m s when getting new dumps from the
p r o b l e m being r u n . Also, it would be wise to m a n u a l l y s e t IRCNBR = 0
at this time so that the dump n u m b e r s from the r e s t a r t e d p r o b l e m will
equal the r e c o r d n u m b e r s on the new tape #5. D e p r e s s i n g S.S. #1 at the
s t a r t of the p r o b l e m will c a u s e p a u s e 111 which will enable t h e s e changes
to be naade.
