N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Julia Shoemake Date of Activity: 3/12/2021 and 4/19/2021

Faculty name: Rajni Parmar

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be

specific about the purpose and your role):

I completed my basic life support recertification. I had been two years since I first completed this

course so I needed to take it again. I also completed the EKG concept online activity. I wanted to

refresh my memory of EKG rhythms and learn more about them.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

I completed my BLS training at CPR2U in Tucson, Arizona for 4 hours.

I completed the EKG concept online activity online and it took me four hours between watching

the videos, writing notes, and practicing EKG interpretation.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

My BLS training was a very valuable experience for me. While I had learned these skills before,

my recertification solidified this information in my head and helped me to remember some of the

things I had forgotten. The instructor emphasized the importance of the practical aspect of CPR,

focusing on the actual act of giving CPR and using an AED. We practiced these skills many

times during the course and I now feel much more confident in my ability to perform CPR in an

emergency situation
While I have learned about EKG interpretation in my past courses at the College of Nursing, I

always struggled with these concepts. I think this course helped me to slow down and take in all

the information. Furthermore, the course even told you what causes the abnormal rhythms and

how it affected the EKG which helped me to understand it better! I now feel like I can interpret

EKGs better. I even wrote down notes on every rhythm so I can study and refer to them later if I

need to.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

Both activities will be very beneficial to my career. Knowing CPR and being able to use it

appropriately in life or death situations is vital for any nurse. I now feel confident that I can

utilize CPR in a code situation calmly and confidently. I will probably be interpreting EKGs

daily since I want to work on a PCU where many patients have tele monitors or need 12 lead

EKGs. This activity will improve my knowledge of different rhythms I may see in my unit and

understand what is causing them as well as the severity.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or

why not? (Describe)

I would always recommend the BLS program. Whether you are a medical professional or an

average citizen, knowing CPR could save someone’s life. This course helped me to feel more

confident and I can perform CPR in a code situation or even in my daily life. I would also

recommend the EKG course to any medical profession who is not confident or thing they could

use a refresher on EKG rhythms. Not only did it help me to memorize the rhythms, it told me the

underlying causes which helped me to understand them better. It is an excellent way to learn

EKG rhythms!
Brochure or proof of attendance obtained if applicable? Signature on validation of

clinical hours form obtained?

I have attached a copy of my BLS certification. There was nothing from the EKG concept online

activity.
