SALT WATER EXPERIMENT

Step 1: What do we know?


 The ocean is made up of salt water.

 Rivers, lakes and swimming pools are fresh water.

Step 2: Ask a Question???


Do objects float better in the ocean (salt water) or in a

lake or swimming pool (fresh water)?

Will an egg float or sink in salt water?

Will an egg float or sink in fresh water?

Step 3: Make a Guess


 The egg will float in water and sink in

water.

Step 4: Do the experiment


Materials: water, salt, eggs, plastic cups, measuring cup

1. Make salt water; mix 1/3 cup salt to 1 ½ cups warm water.
2. Stir until salt is gone (dissolved).
3. Pour 1 ½ cups water into another cup.
4. Ask the question; “Do you think the egg will float or sink in the
fresh water?
 Explain: fresh water is like a lake or river
5. Put egg in fresh water and OBSERVE……
6. Ask the question; “Do you think the egg will float or sink in the
salt water?
 Explain: salt water is like the ocean
 Let the students smell & taste the salt water
7. Put the egg in the salt water and OBSERVE…..
8. Discuss and explain: salt water is denser than fresh water
 The egg will float in salt water because the egg is lighter than salt
water
 The egg will sink in fresh water because the egg is heavier
9. Extension: slowly pour the fresh water into a glass with the salt
water and the floating egg and OBSERVE…..
 The egg should float in the middle of the cup
 Explain: fresh water is lighter than salt water, so the egg should float
on top of the salt water.
