RECAP
At this time of pandemic varied situations were being observe from which people
really do not know whether they are true or not. One of the reasons behind might
be the biases behind the said issue. In this lesson we will figure out the biases of
the author.

7
Tell something about the
picture.

Bias is when a writer or speaker

uses a selection of facts, choice
of words, and the quality and
tone of description, to convey a
particular feeling or attitude. Its
purpose is to convey a certain
attitude or point of view toward
the subject.

LESSON

What is an author’s bias?

A bias is basically when an author is unfair or inaccurate in his or her presentation

of something. In their attempt to persuade, authors often make mistakes in their
thinking patterns and writing choices. This is because every author has a point of
view.

Discussion/Modelling
Every author holds opinions that affect his or her discussion of an issue, opinions
that you as a reader must try to recognize and understand. Such judgments show an
author's biases or preference for one side of an issue over another.
How can we spot bias?

1. Word choice and connotation

Connotation is a further understanding of a word's meaning. (As well as a literal

meaning, It is also a word that carry an additional idea or feeling. As a writer, you
can influence your readers' opinions with the words you choose. The connotations
of your chosen words determine whether your text is biased or unbiased.
Example:

Your friends described you as forceful.

Is forceful the right word? Perhaps assertive, which has a more positive connotation
would be more accurate.

2. Names and titles

The way a person is described or labeled can influence how we think about him or
her.

8
Example:
John Doe, an ex-con, is now running for office.
John Doe, who was convicted 20 years ago for a minor offense, is now running for
office.”

3. Placement and size

Usually, stories in a newspaper or on a news program that are chosen to be put first
are seen as the most important stories. Stories that appear at the back of a
newspaper or at the end of a broadcast are seen as less important.

Example:
If a story about the disaster in the Philippines is on the front page of the newspaper,
it will be seen as important. If the story about the typhoon in the Philippines is buried
at the back of the paper, it will be regarded as less important.

4. Selection or omission
Sometimes, certain details or facts will be cut out of a story, and others will be
included. This can change how readers/viewers think about the story. Make sure to
consider multiple sources to get the full story.

Example

A news story could be written about people booing during a speech. “The President’s
remarks were greeted by loud jeers. A small handful of people disagreed with the
President’s remarks.”

5. Images and videos Example

Some photos can make the subject look

serious, beautiful, healthy, and so on.
Other photos, however, can be very
unflattering and make the subject look
ridiculous, sick, etc. The image of
someone in the news can influence how
people think about him or her.

Activity 3
Below is an article about President Duterte’s state of the Nation Address. List down
at least five (5) Author’s Biases that you can find in the said article.

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the

18th Congress during his 5th State of the
Nation Address (SONA) to pass 21 bills within
the last two years of his term.
But while the country is still struggling to
fight the coronavirus pandemic, only 5 of
Duterte’s SONA priority bills on Monday, July
27, were specifically designed to respond to
the COVID-19 crisis.
These include the proposed COVID-19
response and recovery plan called Bayanihan
to Recover As One Act and the bill providing
incentives to financial institutions to sell
their non-performing assets affected by the
pandemic. (READ:

overtaken by obsession with ‘oligarchs')
1. Bayanihan to Recover as One Act
“May I again reiterate my thanks to you, the men and women of Congress, for
the effort you invested into passing that law (Bayanihan to Heal as One Act). I
hope that we can get some or the same treatment of clarity, purpose and the
fastness to support the passage of the Bayanihan [to Recover as One Act],
which will supplement funds for recovery and response against the impact of
the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The proposed Bayanihan 2 bill provides a comprehensive list of 64
“interventions” that the executive branch is expected to undertake to combat
the pandemic – from setting a COVID-19 testing protocol for vulnerable sectors
to providing aid to those in the transport and tourism industries critically
affected by the health crisis.

The proposed Bayanihan 2 bill provides a comprehensive list of 64
“interventions” that the executive branch is expected to undertake to combat the
pandemic – from setting a COVID-19 testing protocol for vulnerable sectors to
providing aid to those in the transport and tourism industries critically affected
by the health crisis.
These interventions adopted the 30 special powers that the first Bayanihan
law originally granted to Duterte, which expired on June 25.
The Senate already passed the Bayanihan 2 on second reading, while the
House version has hurdled only the committee level so far.
Both chambers, however, are seeking different amounts for the proposed standby
fund for COVID-19 response programs: P162 billion in the House and P140 billion
in the Senate.
Lawmakers will have to reconcile the conflicting provisions of their
respective Bayanihan 2 bills before Congress can pass it into law.
