Highway Gas Mileage

The average highway gas The average highway gas mileage

mileage of a 1967 of a 2019 JCW Hardtop Knights
Thunderbird is about 10.1 Edition is about 33 miles per
miles per gallon. If you were
gallon. If you were to drive
to drive 15,000 miles you
would use 1,485.15 gallons of 15,000 miles you would use about
gasoline or about 5,621.89 454.55 gallons of gasoline or
liters of gasoline. about 1,720.64 liters of gasoline.
Carbon Production
To figure out the amount of carbon produced
by the cars, we need to look at a few things
first. The chemical equation at which our fuel
Octane, burns. This chemical equation is
2C8H18 + 25O2 → 16CO2 + 18H2O. Now we
can convert our fuel from liters to grams,
those grams to moles, and use molar ratios to
find out how much carbon we are releasing
into the air by driving these cars 15,000 miles.
Calculations
The TBird uses 1,485.15 gallons (5,621,886.81 The Mini uses 454.55 gal(1,720,636.36 mL) of
mL) of fuel every 15,000 miles Using the density fuel every 15,000 miles. Using the density of
of octane .703 g/mL we can find out the amount octane .703 g/mL we can find out the amount of
of fuel in grams. Once we have the grams we can fuel in grams. Once we have the grams we can
calculate how many moles of fuel we are using calculate how many moles of fuel we are using
by dividing by the molar mass 114.23g. Using by dividing by the molar mass 114.23g. Using
moles we can then use the equation from the moles we can then use the equation from the
previous slide to find out just how much carbon previous slide to find out just how much carbon
dioxide we are producing. dioxide we are producing.

5,621,886.81mL * .703g/mL =3,952,186.43 g 1,720,636.36mL * 0.703g/mL = 1,209,607 g

3,952,186.43g/114.23g/mol = 34,598mol 1,209,607g/114.23g/mol = 10,589 mol
34,598mol/2 * 16 = 276,784 moles of CO2 10,589mol/2 * 16 = 84,712 mol CO2
276,784mol * 22.4L/mol = 6,199,942.29 liters of 84,712mol * 22.4L/mol = 1,897,548.8 L CO2(g)

Explanation
Based on the evidence we have gathered, we have found that the
1967 Ford Thunderbird is not environmentally friendly compared
to other cars such as the 2019 Mini Cooper JCW Hardtop Knights
Edition. The Mini Cooper we used as a comparison had a gas
mileage of about 33 miles per gallon. This meant that in total it
created 1,897,556.18 liters of CO2 by driving 15,000 miles. That may
not sound environmentally safe, but the Thunderbird has a gas
mileage of about 10.1 miles per gallon. This means the Thunderbird
creates 6,199,942.29 liters of CO2 by driving 15,000 miles. That’s
enough CO2 to fill 3,099,971 2 liter soda bottles and still have a
little left over. That being said the Thunderbird creates over 3 times
as much carbon dioxide as the Mini Cooper and therefore is not as
environmentally friendly.
