Change… for Better? or for

Worst?

GUIDE CARD
Introduction

An ecosystem depends on the interaction of the living and non-living

elements. Changes in Abiotic factors can lead to big problems for some
organisms. It can have a violent effect to the ecosystem.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
o Predict the effect of changes in abiotic factors on
the ecosystem. (S7LT-IIj-12)

OBJECTIVES
o Cite the major abiotic factors of the ecosystem.
o Infer possible impact of changes in abiotic factors
on the ecosystem.
o Appreciate the importance of abiotic factors in the
ecosystem.

1
Pre-test
Multiple Choices. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Please
write all your answers in your activity notebook.

1. Which of the following best defines abiotic factors?

A. Abiotic factors are the living factors of an ecosystem.
B. Abiotic factors are the nonliving factors of an ecosystem.
C. Abiotic factors are neither living nor nonliving factors.

2. Abiotic factors are the _____ factors within an ecosystem.

A. Inorganic C. Living
B. Nonliving D. Organic

3. An environment’s biotic and abiotic factors interact to make a(n)

A. Habitat C. Niche
B. Ecosystem D. Resource

4. Abiotic factors - light, water, …?

A. Soil C. Worms
B. Ferns D. Cacti

5. Which factor is an Abiotic factor?

A. Lion C. Water
B. Air D. b and c

6. Abiotic defines the living parts of an ecosystem?

A. True B. False

7. Which best describes the types of things that make up an

ecosystem?
A. All living and nonliving things C. Plants only
B. Only living things D. Humans and animals

8. Abiotic factor that covers 70% of Earth surface?

A. Sun C. Nutrient
B. Water D. Pebble

9. Abiotic factor that is the main source of energy of plants for

photosynthesis?
A. Sun C. Nutrient
B. Water D. Pebble
C.
10. Environmental influences like water and sunlight are?
A. nonliving C. Growing
B. living D. inorganic

Let’s Review!

In ecology and biology, Biotic describes a living

abiotic components are non- component of an ecosystem; for
living chemical and physical example, organisms, such as
factors in the environment which plants and animals.
affect ecosystems.

An ecosystem depends on the interaction of living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic)

elements in the system. Changes in the abiotic factors can result in tremendous
problems for some organisms.

WHAT WILL POSSIBLY HAPPEN IF ABIOTIC FACTORS CHANGE?

HOW WILL THE CHANGE AFFECTS THE ECOSYSTEM?

The Stars of Abiotic Factors

Sunlight – provides warmth

Soil – most plants need soil

organisms require on Earth. Organisms
relatively stable need water intake. It

temperature range.

Air – sustains life. Animals and other

creatures breathe oxygen. Plants
grow because of the presence of
carbon dioxide. But the abundant
element on earth is Nitrogen.

If one factor changed or removed, the entire ecosystem will be affected.

• Lack of light in the deeper • Poor soil can hinder the

ocean prevents survival of plants and
photosynthesis animals

• Change in chemical composition of • If temperature changes,

air, like air pollution from cars and especially in extreme and
factories will affect everything that sudden change organism
reach air (people and animals on tolerance will harm or kill the
land). It might lead to respiratory organism
illness.

• Change in quantity or quality of
water impact living organisms e.g.
photosynthesis for plants will not be
possible. “A human can go without
food for about three weeks but
would typically only last three to
four days without water.”

This factor will affect where and how many organisms will grow, survive, and multiply.
These factors can shape ecosystem by determining which organisms can live in them,
and what organisms must do to survive.
