The design- and furniture company PRAKRIT is
based in Auroville, near Pondicherry, and was
born out of the cyclone Thane that hit the area
in December 2011.

Auroville is lying in a man-made forest with

millions of trees. The cyclone took down many
trees and our first work was to get all this wood
collected, sent to sawmill and cut and then
stored for drying. PRAKRIT design and furniture
was born out of seeing all this beautiful wood –
and working in the saw mill created an interest
in working with the natural forms instead of
cutting out straight wood. The furniture of
PRAKRIT is based on trying to see the beauty of
the natural wood and its shapes. We are trying
to create objects of utility with respect for the
wood and its beauty.

PRAKRIT has a range of designs in Organic

Forms, but also furniture based on Scandinavian
Design Traditions where form and function has
to merge.

All PRAKRIT furniture is made over a number of

designs, but each piece is unique as we adapt to
the chosen wood planks. A customer can chose
size and we will find the wood in our storage that
fits with the size. Furniture from PRAKRIT is an Art
piece, so solidly build that it will last generations.
Sustainability from Forest to Home.

Tree of Life
The big trees in the forest are the biggest
living organisms - they have always impressed
man, and nearly all religions have their Tree
of Life symbol.
In these partition walls we have created our
version of Tree of Life interwoven with the
Palm Tree. This work has been done with
an interesting combination of modern IT
technology and traditional craftsmanship. The
design has been done with help of computers
– the final design have been printed out in full
scale and glued on the panel – then traditional
wood carvers have done the carving work.
Their way of carving follow old traditions and
the nature of the wood, and is very different
from modern machine carving. The result is
more beautiful, more complex carving which
allows illusion of “going below” – giving a3D
effect of the branches.
These works have been done on order but
similar ones can be designed and done on
request.
Penrose Pattern
Creating intricate patterns have fascinated man for thousands
of years. The Mughals reached some of the highest levels
creating extremely complicated patterns or tiling’s often
using many different shapes or tiles in same pattern. But
all of these patterns eventually all repeat themselves.
Mathematician discussed in the 1960s if it would be possible
to create pattern which did not repeat and forever kept
evolving. The first solution came in 1964, where a pattern
using 20426 different tiles was proved to be aperiodic.
Through the work of many mathematicians this number was
reduced until Roger Penrose in 1974 came up with a pattern
using only two shapes, but never the less the pattern never
repeat itself and keeps on evolving in unpredictable ways.
These patterns have intrigued many but they are very difficult
to work with because of the aperiodicity. The only way to
make them is to let them “play out” in a computer and then
take a section out in full scale. We have done it here, made
the pattern in computer printed it out, glued on the wood
and then local wood carvers have carefully followed the
design.
It is very fascinating that complexity in Nature is so deeply
embedded that with only two simple elements you already
have outmost complexity!
Try to follow the pattern and see how it creates starts and
circles, which then dissolves again in different ways. Your
mind keeps
on finding patterns only to see that they disappear again.
Black burned Tree of Life
The big trees in the forest have always fascinated
man, and all religions have their ”Tree of Life”-
symbol.
After the cyclone Thane we searched through
the forest of Auroville for fallen trees to collect
for cutting. During this search we found this old
hollow tree. It could not be used for timber, but
the form inspired us to use it as a sculpture. An old
decayed “Tree of Life”.
To enhance the age we decided to burn the tree
black and polish it, so outside the black color is
actually black carbon! The inside has been painted
in gold and a powerful LED spot has been mounted
in the bottom.
Now this Black Tree of Life has come to life again
– burned and cut down – but still alive. A symbol
how we treat the Nature around us.
