1.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this steel design project is to reinforce your understanding and application of design
knowledge gained during your undergraduate degree. This is an individual project and counts
33% towards
of the module. There are a total of eight design assignments within the project, detailed
as follows:
D6
External column in braced
bay [20 Marks]
D7 Horizontal
and Vertical bracing
in roof and walls
[20 Marks]
TOTAL [150 marks]
Detailed, but limited, information and data are given in this handout. You are expected to produce
standard design calculations to the current Eurocodes as set out below and quality sketches of
selected structural details.
BS EN 1990‐1 – Basis of Structural Design
BS EN 1991‐1‐1 – Actions on Structures – General actions‐ Densities, self‐weight, imposed
loads for buildings.
BS EN 1991‐1‐3 – Actions on Structures – General actions – Snow loads
BS EN 1991‐1‐4 – Actions on Structures – General actions – Wind actions
BS EN 1991‐3 – Actions on Structures – Actions induced by cranes and machinery.
BS EN 1993‐1 – Design of Steel Structures – General rules and rules for buildings
BS EN 1993‐6 – Design of Steel Structures – Crane supporting structures.
Calculations must be done on standard University of Leeds A4 calculation sheets. Drawings and
sketches should be done neatly using pencil, or CAD, on plain (with title block) A4 or A3 size paper.

2.0 DESIGN SPECIFICATION
2.1 Scope
Design of long span roof members, primary long span members supporting the clear span roof
structure, compound internal and edge columns, gable columns, the principle elements of the
bracing system, a reinforced concrete foundation and sketch details of a typical connection and
critical structural details.
2.2 Building Requirements
The design covers the main structural elements of a new double aircraft hangar for Leeds Bradford
airport (postcode of location LS19 7TU). Outline details of the proposed scheme are given in the
accompanying drawing:
CIVE5139‐5977 – S01: Typical plan and details.
The drawing details the minimum requirements in terms of clear span, minimum headroom, main
door dimensions and structural zones. You are to propose a structure to satisfy these minimum
requirements, subject to the following particulars and details:
(a) Steel members – Grade S355
(b) Bolts – Grade 8.8
(c) Concrete foundations – C35
(d) Floors ‐ mezzanine: Prestressed concrete slabs spanning one way.
(e) Ceilings – to office area only: Suspended with services.
(f) Roof: Built‐up Kalzip structural deck system with a Kalzip 65/500 (3.7kg/m2) profile over a
153St structural deck profile, 1.0mm thick (14.3kg/m2). Insulation to be Kalzip Rockfibre Quilt
– 40 @ 150mm thick (4kg/m2).
Particular attention should be paid to the deflection of the supporting structure. A minimum
roof pitch of 1.5° is required suc h that the
instantaneous
permanent
load deflection
is
taken into account.
N.B. You may assume that this roof system will span up to 8m between supports.
(g) Walls: Wall cladding to be Kingspan KS1000, 80mm thick, vertically spanning.
(h) Fire protection: Steel frame – sprayed on coating.
(i) Electric overhead travelling (EOT) Crane – 6 No. to be provided to give complete coverage of
the internal space of the hangars.
Max SWL per crane = 20 tonnes.
Max span of twin crane beams 15m.
Weight of crane beams, trolley, motors and control gear = 2775kg/15m of crane. Note the
trolley and winch assembly weighs 750kg.
Crane rail deflection, limited to L/500 or 25mm in any 10m length.

(j) Variable actions (in accordance with EN1991‐1 Actions on Structures)
Roof: Category H – accessible except for normal maintenance and repair.
Mezzanine floor, including office and stores: 10kN/m2
(k) An assumed safe ground bearing capacity of 300kN/m2 is appropriate for the foundation
design.
(l) The analysis of the structure may be carried using appropriate engineering software.
However the output from any analysis must be fully validated. Any computer generated
analysis will not be accepted unless accompanied by a full hand validation.

3.0 DETAILS OF DESIGN ASSIGNMENTS
D1 ‐ Analysis of load data and calculation of design loads
Drawing CIVE5139‐5977 – S01 shows the typical floor plan detailing the minimum internal dimensions
for the hangars. Analyse the general design data provided to calculate the following:
The design load at both SLS and ULS for all the applied variable and permanent actions applied
to the roof and mezzanine floor.
The site specific snow load to the roof of the structure considering the geometry of the
external envelope.
The wind loads to each elevation, and the roof, of the structure taking into account the
geometry of your chosen design.
The design loads associated with the EOT crane, e.g. surge, wheel load, crabbing etc.
Your attention is drawn to the relevance of Clause 5.1.1 (BS EN 1993‐1) on the method of design, and
the use of appropriate load factors in accordance with BS EN 1990‐1 (EC0) and EN1991‐3.
D2 – Design and specification of cladding supports
Design a nd/ or specification of t he structural elements directly supporting the roof and wall cladding
systems.
D3 – 84m Clear span roof member
Design of a roof beam/truss (1 only) that spans the main hangar space i.e. 84m clear span and
supports EOT cranes 1 & 2 (4 & 5).
D4 – Primary spine beam
Design a primary spine beam/truss supporting the roof structure, spanning between columns to the
central zone between the hangars.
D5 – Internal column and foundation
Design of an internal column and foundation supporting the structural elements designed in D3 &
D4.
D6 – External column in br aced ba y
Design on e external colum n in a brac ed bay c heck ing b oth co nditions o f w hen wind loa d is ap plied
a) perpen dicula r to the fa cade, and b) th e colu mn is a ctin g as pa rt o f a vert ical bra cing system
when win d is blo win g pa rallel to the f acade.
D7 – Horizo ntal and Vertical Br acin g in Roo f and walls
Design s uffic ient h orizonta l ro of br ac ing and vert ical w all braci ng to justify that sta b ility of t he
structure i s sa t isfied.
D8 – Sketches and drawings
Prov ide sufficien
t d rawings & sketches to clearly
demonstrate
your design intent
and
indicate the location and size of the principle structural elements.
