DEMOGRAPHIC STUDIES (TPS484)

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
ASSIGNMENT 1 (20 Marks) – CLO1

Lecturer: Assoc. Prof. Gs. Dr. Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rashid

Introduction

Students are (by an individual) required to prepare one (1) assignment paper aiming to describe the size and
trends of demographic events: Natural increase, live births and deaths. This would help the students to familiarise
themselves and understand how to use the published demographic data.

To do so, please obtain the following data for the selected area (state level/Federal Territory) as follows:
a. Live births (number and rate) for the years 2010, 2015 and 2020.
b. Deaths (number and rate) for the years 2010, 2015 and 2020.
c. Natural increase (number and rate) for the years 2010, 2015 and 2020.
d. Other relevant data
Note: Please refers to the vital statistics reports of the required years (2010, 2015, and 2020) published by
Department of Statistics, Malaysia.

In preparing the paper, support it with supportive graphical forms (tables, figures/graphs). As detailed, it should
incorporate the following aspects:

1. Introduction (10%)
a. Aim
b. objectives

2. Explanation of the Data Obtained (10%)

a. Sources
b. Briefly introduction to the data obtained

3. Data Analyses and Results (40%)

a. Data presentation (trends by rate)
b. Analyses and Results (Interpretations and Discussions, i.e. debate on the impact/ consequences/
contributing factors of the trends, compare to the national/state average, etc.)

4. Recommendations (20%)
Suggestions of intervention strategies

5. Conclusions (10%)
Overall conclusions: Study aim, summary of findings and conclusions.

General Guidelines:

The general guidelines are as follows:

• Length of assignment paper is about 3 – 5 pages (including tables, figures and list of references).
• References from published reports (hardcopies or online/digital)
• Format: Font Arial, size 11, a single spacing, justified.
• Cover Page : Assignment paper title, course title & UiTM logo, name of writer, lecturer and date of
submission, and
• Creativity, adequacy of data and valid are encouraged and shall take into account in the marking process.
