6.1.1 Continuous Task CPU Usage

A continuous task uses all of the available resources of the controller that aren’t used by a higher priority task to 
scan the logic and support communications at all times.   Therefore any Logix application with a continuous task 
will always utilize 100% of the controllers CPU.   Communications to and from external devices time is 
completed during the time allocated by the System Over Head Time Slice percentage, (SOTS).   

If a Continuous Task is present, the SOTS is used by the controller.   Even if periodic tasks also exist.      

The bright yellow banner at the top of the tab is always displayed when a Continuous Task is configured in the 
controller.   This will alert you that the 100% CPU usage is expected when a Continuous Task is present and may 
or may not be an issue.  It does not necessarily mean that no additional programs or tasks can be added to the 
system.  Additional code can be added to the Continuous Task even if the CPU is 100% utilized.   The elapsed 
task scan time will increase from the additional code.
