Part (a) (i) Blood is transported from the lungs by the pulmonary veins to the left atrium of the heart. It
is then pumped through the bicuspid valve into the left ventricle; then from the left ventricle it is
pumped through the semilunar valves into the aorta. The aorta then takes blood away from the heart to
the rest of the body.

(ii) the blood vessel labelled X was the coronary artery that supplies the heart muscles with blood so if it
was blocked, the heart would stop pumping blood and the individual would have a cardiac arrest/heart
attack.

(iii) Valve helps the blood which is flowing at a lower pressure to flow in one direction
by preventing backflow.
(iv) Formation of plaques would cause the diameter of the blood vessels to get smaller. This would result
in an increase in the pressure on blood flowing through the arteries or cause the heart to have to pump
harder, increasing the pressure to keep blood flowing to the organs and tissues throughout the body.
