InTASC Standard #2: Learning Differences

“The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities
to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.”

Throughout my life and path as an educator, I have incorporated the diversity of cultures
and communities in the classrooms I’m in. Every individual is different, and children aren’t the
exception. They grow up having their own traditions, which help them develop their own
identities. I believe in the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment which allows
everyone to feel welcomed. During my student teaching placement, I began a weekly talking
circle. We introduced it using historical facts and highlighted the importance of being respectful
to the opinions of others. The expectations and rules of the talking circle were established and
reviewed every week. We talked about various interesting topics, including one thing they
wanted to change in their school or the world.
