he's letting people get murked left and right like when he sat there while the rock
climber was eaten alive by a bird monster.

He saves people if he knows they can be saved. On the boat he knew that
Leorio and Kurapika would catch him. Gon is also an excellent swimmer so
there's that.

With the rock climber tho...

He said that he wasn't a good climber by himself and it would have been a
suicide if he jumped down to save him.

Gon might be simple but he isn't stupid, as stated by Netero.

Also plot armor.
