MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES LIST:

• Worsted Weight Yarn – Red (about 250 yds), White (about 100 yds)
• J (6mm) Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle
• 6 – 8 oz Fiberfill Stuffing
• Small, Sharp Scissors
• Large, Blunt Tapestry Needle

GAGE: 12 sc = 4 inches Pillow is 14" x 16" (35.5cm x 40.5cm)

16 rows = 4 inches

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Make an adjustable ring: Leaving a tail at the beginning, anchored between little finger
and ring finger, wrap thread around index finger and middle finger of left hand (counter-
clockwise if you look with the tips of your fingers facing you). Insert hook underneath
first strand of yarn, then catch second strand with hook and pull a loop up underneath
first strand. Remove fingers of left hand from ring and hold working end of yarn. Chain
2, work number of stitches required into ring. Pull up a long loop, then, grasping the
stitches just made with right hand and tail with left (or vice versa), pull to tighten ring.
Insert hook into long loop and tighten back against hook. Making sure tail is to the back,
skip first chains worked and continue working pattern.

• Thread the long end onto a tapestry needle. With the bottom of the center bud toward
you, begin wrapping the 1st petal counter-clockwise around the bottom of the center
bud, tacking it in place to the lower lps of the bud as you go. Continue to wrap the
petals around clockwise in a spiral formation, tacking the beginning-ch edge of each
wrap to the lower lps of the previous wrap all the way to the end of the last petal.

• Form small rose using the same method used for large rose.

FINISH AND ATTACH APPLIQUÉS.

• Pin the large rose and the 3 buds to the RS of one of the heart pieces, in the desired
positions (see photos for idea). Pull all loose yarn ends through to the back of the
piece.

• Ch 26 with white; FO, leaving long end for sewing ch to heart. Pin in place,
beginning underneath the rose, and running down at an angle toward the lower side
edge of the heart. Still using white, make 3 more chains, each one just long enough to
reach from the bottom edge of one of the buds to the rose stem (see photo). Pin the
chains in place.

• Sew stem chains, buds, rose, and leaves in place. I like to use a back stitch sewn right
down the middle of the chain to attach the stems.
• Sew the small rose in place over the area where the 4 stems meet (see photo).

LACE TRIM:

1. Working in free lps on row 2 of edging with RS of front piece facing you, join white
with sc in sl st between lobes at top edge of heart, [sk next free lp, 5 dc in next free lp, sk
next free lp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next free lp], repeat within [ ] around the heart; join with sl st
in 1st sc; FO. (35 5-dc shells)
2. Optional. The shells on this row will alternate with the shells on row 1. In other
words, you should be able to see the shells on row 1 between the shells on row 2.
Working in free lps on row 1 of edging with RS of front piece facing you, join white with
sl st in 1st free lp at bottom of heart, 4 dc in same pl, (sk next free lp, sc in next free lp, sk
next free lp, 5 dc in next free lp) 16 times, sk next free lp, (sc in next free lp, ch 1) 6
times, (sk next free lp, 5 dc in next free lp, sc in next free lp, sk next free lp) 5 times, sk
next 2 free lps, (sc in next free lp, sk next free lp, 5 dc in next free lp, sk next free lp) 11
times; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3; FO. (34 5-dc shells)
3. Optional. Working in free lps on row 2 of edging with RS of back piece facing you,
join white with sc in sl st between lobes at top edge of heart, [sk next free lp, 5 dc in next
free lp, sk next free lp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next free lp], repeat within [ ] around the heart;
join with sl st in 1st sc; FO. (35 5-dc shells)

SEW FRONT TO BACK:

Use red yarn threaded onto a tapestry needle to sew the 2 pieces of the heart together:
Begin at the bottom point of the heart and secure the beginning tail of the yarn by running
the needle underneath the upper lps of 4 or 5 stitches on the WS of the back piece, then
turn and run it underneath 3 or 4 of the same stitches. With the WS of the two pieces
held together, bring the needle to the RS of the back piece through the outer lp of the
bottom-most sc on row 3 of edging. Insert the needle through the outer loop of the next
sc on row 3 (inserting from front to back), then through the outer loop of the
corresponding sc on the front piece, in the same direction (make sure you match up the
stitches of both pieces). Turn the needle and insert it through the outer lp of the next sc
on the front piece (inserting from back to front), then through the outer loop of the
corresponding sc on the back piece. Sew until there are about 6" (15cm) remaining to
close; stuff the lobes of the heart pillow. Continue sewing, adding more stuffing as you
go. Fasten off and hide the loose end inside the pillow.
