Dear Jonathan:

GO BLACK KNIGHTS! This is a long letter with important information concerning your
application to the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York. Don't stop
reading until the end! We've received your initial information to compete for admission for the
West Point Class of 2026. We have an Internet web site featuring many resources for West Point
candidates with open admissions files located at https://candidate.westpoint.edu. The website
will allow you to view your file on-line and submit messages to the Admissions staff.

NOMINATION
If you haven't already, you should immediately contact both of your United States
Senators and your United States Congressional Representative for nominations. If you have a
parent who is active duty military, serving in the Reserve Components or retired from the Armed
Services of the United States or you are a soldier on Active Duty or serving in the Army
Reserves or National Guard, you should also apply for a Service Connected nomination as
explained at https://westpoint.edu/admissions/prospective-cadets/nomination-information.
Another great feature of your candidate website is the ability for you to download letters requesting
Congressional and Service Connected Nominations. Remember, only candidates who obtain nominations
may compete for an appointment to USMA. Get on this right now and apply for those nominations
immediately!

YOUR WEST POINT FOCUS NOW

Admission to USMA is extremely competitive and it is in your best interest to strengthen
your record to the fullest extent possible. We seek well rounded candidates who are strong in
leadership, academics and athletics. You should strive for excellence in all these areas. Your
West Point focus should be on these items now:

• Seek leadership positions in athletic, extracurricular, church, scouting, community and

other activities.
• Continue to excel in your academic program.
º We recommend that you take the SAT and ACT at least twice. We use the
highest combination of scores in our qualification process.
º Effective immediately, West Point requires all applicants to submit a writing score with
their SAT and/or their ACT exams. Failure to complete the writing section for the
exam will invalidate your scores for admission. The SAT requires the writing exam
as part of the test itself. The ACT offers an optional writing portion. Please take the time
now to ensure you have been scheduled to take the writing portion of the ACT exam.

• As soon as I receive your sixth semester High School transcript and updated SAT or ACT
scores, I will re-evaluate your file this summer for further consideration in the admissions
process. Upon favorable evaluation, you will be able to download additional application
materials this summer.
• Excel and challenge yourself in your athletic endeavors, push to your limits and further!
• You will be required to pass a Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) as part of the
admissions qualifying process.
º The CFA consists of pull-ups, kneeling basketball throw, sit-ups, push-ups, a 40 yard
shuttle run, and a one mile run.
º You should begin practicing these events now in order to be prepared for the test.

• You must be medically qualified to become a cadet at West Point and an Officer in
the United States Army.
º After I re-evaluate your file with your most recent SAT or ACT scores, the Department
of Defense Medical Examination and Review Board (DODMERB) may contact you
with scheduling information for a medical examination in your local area sometime
this summer.
º After notification from DODMERB, schedule the examination as soon as you
can.
º Respond promptly to DODMERB for any request for follow-up information.
º If you are notified of a medical disqualification by DODMERB, USMA may
consider you for a medical waiver.
- Do not request medical waiver consideration.
- If you are competitive for an offer to USMA or one of our preparatory
programs, we will request waiver consideration from DODMERB and
notify you of required actions.
º I cannot over emphasize how important this examination is, get it done early.

WEST POINT AND YOUR ARMY

I highly recommend that you learn as much as you can about being a cadet and a future
Active Duty officer in the United States Army. There are several websites that you should
bookmark and visit periodically to gain current information on West Point and the Army.
• The West Point homepage is found at https://westpoint.edu/.
º This is a great site for viewing current events and video clips for both cadets and
the community at West Point. It is constantly updated and provides links to other
interesting websites as well.
• https://goarmywestpoint.com/ is the official website of our Intercollegiate
Athletics program.
º Over 25% of our cadets compete on intercollegiate varsity teams nationwide.
º This site provides schedules of in-season sports, summaries on recent
competitions, write-ups for varsity athletes selected for special recognition and
more.

While these sites provide great information on West Point, you should also be familiar
with your Army. The Army's home page is found at www.army.mil. This is an informative site
to see what adventures and opportunities await you as a future Active Duty Army Officer leading
our Soldiers. As you continue in your college search, you should also be exploring the Army ROTC
scholarship program at www.goarmy.com/rotc/. Please take advantage of all these resources
as you make the decision on which school you will attend for your undergraduate education.
