This study explored the communicative styles used by English students at the State University of Makassar, Indonesia in classroom presentations. Recordings of 12 student group presentations were analyzed using discourse analysis. The study found that students employed various communicative styles, including speech acts, discourse markers, language choices, address terms, and inclusion of terms from the local Bugis-Makassar language. These findings are relevant to developing effective classroom interaction in English language teaching.

The focus of this paper is to explore the expressions used by a group of students to communicate in the classroom. This paper is based on a study conducted in 2015 at the State University of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study focused on two English classes which employed classroom presentations as the learning strategy. To collect data, the researcher recorded the classroom presentations of the two classes. Twelve recordings from twelve groups of students were obtained, transcribed, and analyzed by using discourse analysis approach. The communicative styles used by the students were discussed based on the communication strategies of Dörnyei and Scott (1997)and the students’ talk was analyzed based on Brown’s FLINT system (2000). Findings show that students employed various styles to communicate in the classroom presentations. Their communicative stylescan be in the form of speech acts, discourse markers, language choices, address terms, and the inclusion of regional terms derived from the Bugis-Makassar language such as the pronoun -ko and softeners -mi and -ji. Findings of this study are relevant in the development of English language teaching, particularly in effort to create effective classroom interaction.

Oleh karena itu, penting untuk diselidiki Gaya komunikasi yang digunakan di kelas, terutama oleh siswa. Fokus tulisan ini adalah mengeksplorasi ekspresi yang digunakan oleh sekelompok siswa untuk berkomunikasi di kelas. Makalah ini didasarkan pada sebuah penelitian yang dilakukan pada tahun 2015 di Universitas Negeri Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada dua kelas bahasa Inggris yang menggunakan presentasi kelas sebagai strategi pembelajaran. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti mencatat presentasi kelas dari dua kelas tersebut. Dua belas rekaman dari dua belas kelompok siswa diperoleh, ditranskrip, dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana. Gaya komunikatif yang digunakan oleh siswa didiskusikan berdasarkan strategi komunikasi Dörnyei dan Scott (1997) dan diskusi siswa dianalisis berdasarkan sistem FLINT Brown (2000). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan berbagai macam gaya untuk berkomunikasi dalam presentasi kelas. Gaya komunikatif mereka bisa dalam bentuk tindak tutur, penanda wacana, pilihan bahasa, syarat alamat, dan dimasukkannya istilah regional yang berasal dari bahasa Bugis-Makassar seperti kata ganti -ko dan softeners -mi and -ji. Temuan penelitian ini relevan dalam pengembangan pengajaran bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam upaya menciptakan interaksi kelas yang efektif.
