q&a section
Media Interview Information

For Black Widow

FOR TALENT ONLY

Black Widow Prep Sheet

You should always be prepared to answer the following questions:

Q: “What can the audience expect from the Black Widow movie? Will this

movie provide new characters or villains?”

A: You can expect loads of action scenes, new characters, new villains, and a

new Black Widow suit. You’ll see Natasha in a brand new light! This film is 100%

a fan-service film.

Q: “Is this the last Marvel project you will be a part of?”

A: Yes. Of course, Marvel projects are so unique and have been a big part of

my life over the last ten years so I would not be opposed to it if given the

chance; but Natasha’s story has come to an end. I won’t be a part of her story

anymore.

Q: “How has your character, Natasha Romanoff, physically and emotionally

developed since Iron Man 2?”

A: Natasha has grown both emotionally and physically. Her mental and

physical strength has kept the Avengers together even when they were apart

18
in Civil War. She’s loyal to her Avengers family and in Black Widow we get to

see how she comes face to face with her past life and the family members

she’s left behind at home. She’s stronger than ever before and will have new

weapons and stunts to unveil.

Q: “What can we expect of this movie to be different from other Marvel

projects?”

A: Without giving too much, Black Widow will establish Natasha’s

well-deserved backstory. It’s not a trilogy like most of the other original six

Avengers have but this is definitely a movie that tells an untold, long-overdue

story. Kevin Feigie told me, “It’s a prequel that stands on its own but informs

you of things you didn’t know.” Plus, I expect lots of new Marvel easter eggs,

too.

Q: “Is Natasha Romanoff still alive?”

A: Sadly, the film is set years before Avengers: Endgame. So in Black Widow,

yes, she is alive but she probably won’t be returning from the dead for other

future projects. (haha)

Q: “How long did it take to film this movie? Did COVID have any impact on

filming?”

A: We filmed in Norway, Budapest, Morocco, the UK, and Atlanta. It took around

6 months to film everything with everyone’s schedules in 2019. At the time of

19
filming COVID was not yet a world health threat, so we were lucky to avoid any

issues with reshoots.

Q: “What COVID precautions were on set during re-shoots? Did you have

any re-shoots?”

A: Reshoots occurred in February of 2020, but the only covid precautions at

the time were to wash your hands and stay away from anyone sick. No one

expected this to happen. Here we are nearly two years later!

Q: “This is the third time this movie has been pushed back - will this

physically impact how the audience receives it?”

A: Audiences can watch the movie in-person or on Disney+ with premier

access at the same time. Health and safety are the most important thing

currently, so fans will be able to watch however they feel most comfortable.

The hype for the movie is certainly still there so enjoy however you can.

Q: “What was the most challenging part of filming Black Widow? What

stunts were involved?”

A: Saying goodbye to a character I’ve played for so long. And the stunts,

stunts were hard but rewarding. Stunts on set are always very precise. You

never want them to look tacky or off, so we try to make them look as real as

possible. I do as many as I physically can.

20
Q: “Black Widow kicks off as the first movie of Phase Four. You are a veteran

of the MCU. What can future Marvel actors take from this movie going

forward?”

A: Appreciate the work while you do it. Take a naturalistic approach to your

character and humanize them. Black Widow was an opportunity for the

director, studio and I to fill in those moments Natasha missed over the last

decade. Definitely dedicate your time and energy because this is

career-defining.

Q: “Will Tony Stark/Captain America/Black Widow ever come back to the

MCU?”

A: It would be nice to see a reunion but RDJ, Chris Evans and I have told our

stories. Someday some remake will surely happen and Tony Stark, Cap and

the rest of the Avengers will have another chance to tell their story.

Q: “Is Black Widow 2 in the works?”

A: Not likely. Especially since this movie is set long before the current Phase

Four timeline.

Q: “Where will you be watching the movie? In-person or on Disney+?”

A: Both! Following COVID regulations, of course, my family and I will be

attending in-person screenings and renting it on Disney+ for premier access!

21
Q: “Will Natasha Romanoff team up with her old family and teammates?

Will she return to the Red Room?”

A: I can’t give too much away but definitely expect some new team ups and

interactions with new key characters.

Q: “Will this move fill in some unanswered plot holes or unanswered

questions to the MCU timeline?

A: It's a film very much about self-forgiveness and accepting decisions that

were made for you. It's much deeper than anything we could have done

earlier. So expect to have some questions answered and to have more

questions, too.

Q: “Are there any cameos we should watch for within the movie?”

A: Spoilers! Marvel will have my head for this. You just have to watch and find

out!

Q: “Will we finally know what happened in Budapest?”

A: Budapest is a secret only Jeremy Renner and I know. No, you’ll just have to

watch to find out!

ADVICE FOR FACING THE NEWS MEDIA
Some quick tips to put you at ease when being interviewed
1. Remember to stay on message. AVOID SPOILING THE MOVIE!

2. Think before you answer a question - sometimes words can be caught

out of context. Avoid anything that can be misinterpreted or can be

interpreted as a spoiler.

3. Be positive and respectful of the interviewer and their time. Act grateful

to be there.

4. Always be truthful. The public eye is on you and fans will always find out

the truth.

5. Know what not to say (view following page) and, when in doubt, refer to

media training.

6. You have a right to avoid answering a question, if you so choose.

Always refuse respectfully and light-heartedly to avoid a scandal or

issue.

7. Avoid miscommunication by asking for clarification if you are unsure of

the question.

8. Small talk is always a good way to break the ice. Backstories from sets

always help.

9. Always come prepared for the worst but expect the best. Your interview

will be great if you have low-expectations for the interview.

10. Wear appropriate clothes. Consult with your stylist and makeup artist

to ensure you are on brand and in the best light.

31
11. Incorporate the question within the start of your answer to maintain

control of the conversation. Keep answers short and sweet and the

interviewer will continue asking for more information.

12. Drink water, be hydrated, relaxed and aware of your body language.

(Smile!)

13. Be yourself.

14. Finally, keep in mind, the reporters are people too. Don’t be intimidated.

You are in control of the outcome of their interview. Everything will be

alright.

WHAT NOT TO SAY/DO

Some quick tips that can help you avoid crisis communication. Or, just help you feel better when
being interviewed.

1. DO NOT SPOIL THE MOVIE! Don’t leak any sensitive information about the

movie or the cast that is not already out in the trailers. Avoid questions

that pressure you to answer this.

○ If you find yourself in a position where you feel you will reveal key

details about the movie (details that are not in the trailer), quickly

change the subject. You can follow the route of Tom Holland or

Mark Ruffalo and blame Marvel. “Marvel will have my head/I think I

may have said too much, Marvel please don’t come for me!”

○ Accidental or on-purpose spoilers ruin the movie for the fans and

are bad for the press. Avoid spilling sensitive production secrets

as well.

2. Do not limit yourself to the subject matter of the questions.

○ If you find yourself uncomfortable with the subject matter - or

wish to bring up something or a story related to the interview

questions - you can always string the conversation in a different

direction. But, always remember to be on brand and avoid

miscommunication.

3. Avoid negative conversations about other people or companies. Never

speak badly of cast and crew.

○ No one likes malicious gossip. Always remain positive to avoid

bad press.

4. Do not say ‘no comment’ it looks defensive and is tantamount to an

admission of guilt.

○ If you must avoid a question, respond with a comical retort.

Something like: “I wish I could tell you, x reporter. But I may get into

some trouble with Marvel for that!” It is both mysterious and

comical enough to avoid coming off as defensive and rude.

Marvel Studios knows this is a way to avoid answering a question

in a comical and lighthearted way and is not malicious. You are

free to do this.

5. Do not let your emotions get the best of you on camera.

○ Keep your emotions in check. If something were to stir up

negative (or positive) emotions, remember actions have

consequences. Always remember: would this look good in

hindsight?

33
6. Do not leave too many questions unanswered. Avoid talking or

speculating about current or future projects, either related or unrelated

to you.

○ Leaving too many possibilities for misinterpretation sparks rumors

that are hard to contain. When asked if X movie is receiving a

sequel, or if X is reprising their role, never say “maybe” or “it could

happen,” unless you are speaking of yourself with intentions of

returning or explaining the comment in the future.
