Simple Past

Use:
Actions or events that happened in the past. Those actions begin and ended in
the past
- It rained yesterday
- He worked until 7 p.m. last night
- They played baseball two days ago.
Expressions:

Spelling rules:
 Add “ed” at the end of the regular verb
Work worked
Jump jumped
 If the verb ends in “e” add only the “d”
Create created
 If the verb ends in consonant + “y” eliminate it and add “ied”
Study studied
 If the verb ends in consonant + vowel + consonant, double the last
consonant and add “ed” at the end. (Remember that it is only if the accent is at
the end or if it is a one syllable word)
Stop stopped
Top topped
Prefer Preferred
 Do not double the last letter if the verb ends in w, x or y
Mix Mixed
Play Played
Structure:
Positive sentences: Subject + verb in the past (ed) + …….
I studied last night
He cooked dinner yesterday
Negative sentences: Subject + auxiliary (did) + not + base form of the verb +
I didn’t study last night
He did not cook dinner yesterday
Questions: Auxiliary (did) + subject + base form of the verb
Did you study last night? Yes, I did/No, I didn´t
Did he cook dinner last night? Yes, he did/No, he didn´t

Irregular Verbs
When using the simple past, we need to be careful with the irregular verbs,
those are verbs that when used in the past, the spelling changes completely, and
it is not required to add “ed” at the end. This verbs need to be memorized.
Some irregular verbs are:
Go  Went I went to China last year
Run  Ran They ran two miles this morning
Make  Made He made a big sand castle
Buy  Bought She bought a new computer
Drink  Drank We drank too much last night
Write  Wrote I wrote a poem for my mother
Sing  Sang He sang in the school contest yesterday
Structure
Positive: Subject + verb in the past + ……….
He bought a new pair of shoes
Negative: Subject + auxiliary (did) + not + base form of the verb + ……
He didn’t buy a new pair of shoes
Questions: Auxiliary (did) + subject + base form of the verb + ………
Did he buy a new pair of shoes?
