Chacarera:

Repeat: Above is a rhythm exercise depicting the same pattern but notated in two
different ways. Play through each line a few times, noticing where you find yourself
putting the beat when you switch which one you are reading. Does it feel easier for you
to play feeling it in 3/4 or 6/8? If you find that the notes are tripping you up, then feel free
to play the provided rhythm staying on a single pitch.
Now try to switch lines between measures (so for the first measure playing the top line,
moving to the bottom line for the second, and so on).

Respond:
This switching feeling between 3/4 and 6/8 can be found in La Chacarera dance music,
originating in Argentina. This music is characteristic of being felt in both meters
simultaneously, with the two rhythmic feelings joining together at the end of the song.
This is also shown visually by the dance that goes along with this kind of music. Watch
the following videos at least once, taking note of where you find yourself feeling the beat.
Does this switch at all?

Once you have an understanding of this rhythmic device, go ahead and improvise a
short pattern of any length that tells the story of your favorite book. It can describe the
characters, the overall narrative, or maybe just a specific scene. Feel free to implement
other rhythmic and melodic devices from previous exercises you’ve done as well.
