    Flywheel/drive plate locking tool - No.5-8840-2230-0.

    General precautions

    Disconnect battery earth lead.


    Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
    Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
    Observe tightening torques.
    If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
    Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other gears.
    Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing gear(s) removed.

    Valve timing procedures

    Removal/installation of timing gears requires:


    Gearbox, clutch and flywheel removal.

    NOTE: Timing gears located at rear of engine.

    Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .


    Ensure timing marks on crankshaft gear and idler gear 1 aligned [2] .
    Ensure timing mark on rear of camshaft gear aligned with upper edge of cylinder head [3] .

    Injection pump timing adjustment

    Engine codes 4HE1-XS/4HE1-XS (TC)

    Turn crankshaft clockwise to 13° BTDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .


    Ensure timing mark on injection pump gear aligned with timing mark on injection pump [4] .
    Install injection pump. Finger tighten bolts.
    Remove blanking plug from injection pump.
    Adjust injection pump timing as follows:
    Ensure injection pump timing marks aligned [5] .
    Turn crankshaft clockwise to 8° BTDC (Euro stage II emissions) or 9° BTDC (Euro stage III emissions).
    Ensure injection pump timing marks aligned [6] .
    If necessary, adjust position of injection pump until timing marks aligned [6] .

    Except engine codes 4HE1-XS/4HE1-XS (TC)

    Turn crankshaft clockwise to 13° BTDC on No.1 cylinder [1] .


    Ensure timing mark on injection pump gear aligned with timing mark on injection pump [4] .
    Install injection pump. Finger tighten bolts.
    Remove blanking plug from injection pump.
    Turn crankshaft clockwise until crankshaft timing mark aligned with pointer [1] :
    4HF1/4HF1-I/4HF1-II/4HE1-XN: 8° BTDC.
    4HG1: 9° BTDC.
    4HE1-T: 7° BTDC.
    Ensure injection pump timing marks aligned [7] .
