Lesson Planning Structure*

Subject/Grade Level: Mathematics / Kindergarten

Time/Duration: 1-2 class periods

Objectives

Who is an energy saver, and who is an energy waster? This math activity highlights the

importance of conservation.

Standards/TEKS

111.2. Mathematics, Kindergarten

(1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to

acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:

(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace;

(B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information,

formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and

evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;

(D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple

representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate;

(E) create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical

ideas;

Anticipatory Set

To start the lesson, ask students:

 What are some things we can do to save energy?

 What are things people do that waste energy?

Teaching: Input/Mini Lesson

Demonstrate by flipping light switch off and on, ask example questions to make

students understand whether they save energy or waste it.

Teaching: Modeling

Continue using different examples around the room to demonstrate to the students and

asking them what should we do here to save energy. Discuss different ways they save

or waste energy at home. I will also show examples of small addition and subtraction

scenarios so that they can complete the last section of my assignment Independently.

Teaching: Checking for Understanding

I will go around the room and ask each student if they feel that they understand, and

ask them to give me an example of saving energy, and then an example of wasting

energy. I will also have a spin wheel and have each student come up and spin it and tell

me if this example saves energy or wastes energy, lastly I will have a student count and

mark how many of each, and then another student find the difference (subtract)

Questioning strategies:

Ask several times what saves and what wastes energy. Also asking how to find the

difference (subtract) of two numbers.

Guided Practice

I will now give the students the assignment and we will discuss different examples,

being sure that they understand. We will also subtract two numbers together.
Independent Practice

Students will fill out the worksheet independently to demonstrate their understanding

and mastery of TEK (A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society,

and the workplace;

Closure

I will continue to state things that waste energy and have the students correct those

things. I will also check for understanding during different parts of the day. For example

when lining up for lunch, I will ask them to raise their hands and tell me if I should leave

the light on when we leave or should I turn it off.
