EDUC 602 – INFERENTIAL STATISTICS

SUNDAY, 1:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Name: Worksheet No.: 3

Course: Date:

DIRECTIONS: Read and analyze each statement or problem. Show complete solution for full credit.

1) For this exercise, do the following.

a) Identify the claim and state H0 and Ha.
b) Determine whether the hypothesis test is left-tailed, right-tailed, or two-tailed, and whether to use a z-test,
a t-test, or a chi-square test. Explain your reasoning.
c) Choose one of the options. If convenient, use technology.
Option 1: Find the critical value(s), identify the rejection region(s), and find the appropriate
standardized test statistic.
Option 2: Find the appropriate standardized test statistic and the P-value.
d) Decide whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.
e) Interpret the decision in the context of the original claim.

DOLE reports that the mean amount of earnings for full-time workers ages 25 to 34 with a master’s degree
is less than ₱70,000. In a random sample of 15 full-time workers ages 25 to 34 with a master’s degree, the mean
amount of earnings is ₱66,231 and the standard deviation is ₱5,945. At 𝜶 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟓, is there enough evidence to
support the agency’s claim? Assume the population is normally distributed.

2) National Testing Center for Education (NTCE) claims that STEM students in a college readiness program have
higher ACT scores than those in a general program. The mean ACT score for 49 STEM students who are in a
college readiness program is 22.2. Assume the population standard deviation is 4.8. The mean ACT score for 44
high school students who are in a general program is 20.0. Assume the population standard deviation is 5.4. At 𝛼 =
0.10, can you support the testing center’s claim?

3) Philippine Statistics Office claims that the mean household income is larger in Cebu City than it is in Dumaguete
City. In Cebu City, a sample of 19 residents has a mean household income of ₱49,700 and a standard deviation of
₱8800. In Dumaguete City, a sample of 15 residents has a mean household income of ₱42,000 and a standard
deviation of ₱5100. At a = 0.05, can you support the PSO’s claim? Assume the population variances are not equal.
