Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Fossils

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S3E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils
provide evidence of past organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop
strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to
improve learning outcomes.

Guiding Question(s): What can fossils tell us?

Selected Technology Tool: Edpuzzle

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐

Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or
Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven and student-led. Students should have “Voice and Choice” in the activities,
selecting the topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Your student’s projects must be shared locally or globally to meet this level.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson using Edpuzzle is a great way to allow students to
use technology while still learning in the process. The video I choose is entertaining and has bright
colors to grab attention. The questions that they must answer in between the videos gives them
the chance to use critical thinking.

Lesson idea implementation: This lesson will start off by reading the book Fossils tell stories by: Yu-ri
Kim. After we read the book, I will send the students to the computers to watch the video and
answer the questions. After they finish that we will create our own personal fossil that includes
details about the student. We will further the lesson by going to a fossil museum.
