Job Summary:

Under direction of the Park Manager, assist in managing the operations of Slide Rock State
Park. Ensures public health and safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations. In
conjunction with the Park Manager, responsible for park administration; including
instructing and training subordinate staff and volunteers performing a variety of park tasks
for as well as problem solving and decision making.

Job Duties:

Empowers and leads staff to problem solve and build strong teams. Develops and mentors
staff using best management practices and setting leadership examples through personal
work culture. Assist the Park Manager in providing reports to Agency leadership to
continuous improvement, operations, personnel and budget. Professionally represent the
Agency to stakeholders and community partners

Provides customer service by phone and in-person and respond to publics inquiries about
park hours, accommodations, reservations

Perform cashier duties at the Contact Station/Gift Shop; collect and account for fee for
park admission and store purchases.

Promote the safety of park visitors and enforces Park rules and protect Park resources;
Utilizes two-way radio communications system; Confers with local officials and law
enforcement officers; Completes all necessary reports concerning incidents.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge: A working understanding of principles and processes for providing customer


and personal services. Park rules/ regulations, fees and revenue functions; techniques for
display and interpretation of objects/ artifacts and general resources to visitors; general
office procedures.

Skills: Public relations and information dissemination; customer service; active listening;
critical thinking; driving and operating automotive equipment; basic custodial techniques.

Ability: Research of natural or historical information; performing math calculations; first


aid techniques; oral and written communications; interpersonal relationships.

Selective Preference(s):

One year of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger 3, OR three years of experience


equivalent to a Park Ranger 2. A Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural
Resource Management, History, Archaeology, Geology, Ecology, Recreation Planning or a
closely related field may substitute for one year of the Park Ranger 2 experience. Any
combination of training and experience that meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities
(KSAs) may be substituted.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver’s license appropriate to assignment.
Some positions may require certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

I have recently graduated from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s degree in Park and

recreation management with an emphasis in law enforcement. For the past four years, I have

been developing expertise in all the realms of my degree. I have physical outdoor experience as

well as varied pieces of training and knowledge of medical, survival, and recreational processes.

I have, in accordance with my bachelor’s degree, graduated from Northern Arizona University’s

police academy. The health, safety, and well-being of our National Parks and those protected on

and around the land has been a passion of mine throughout my life and is what has motivated me

to apply for this position.

● My degree has allowed me to have several experiences that have real-world applications.

Throughout my college career, I have nearly mastered my problem-solving skills, gained

leadership experience, and figured out the best way to work productively in teams or

groups.

● As a student, my time allowed me to have encounters with people from all corners of

life, which has helped me develop a deeper understanding of those around me. From

group projects to training in the academy, these experiences have not only given me skills

with personal relations but elevated my previous customer service skills.

● I have over twelve years of experience performing basic math calculations, written

communications, research techniques, and the ability to form interpersonal relationships.

I have been performing and perfecting these tasks throughout my entire scholastic career.
● The academy has given me extensive safety training and experience with basic medical

knowledge and practice, de-escalation skills, and an overall quick-thinking

problem-solving safety scenario mind.

● I take pride in any position I hold as well as the companies I work with and represent. I

feel that as part of the face of the National Forest Service that enhancing and perfecting

my skills as a Park Ranger is my duty. Through self-development, gained experience, and

determination with my work, I will master the skills necessary to excel within this

position, as well as further become a well-rounded and fair person.

● I am committed to excellence within the workplace as well as around the park. I strive to

be the best ranger I can be and remain professional while also working with enthusiasm,

curiosity, and compassion.

Good number of key terms are used, especially with coverage of qualifications and
skills. Used specific vocab from job description.

3. If you were part of the hiring committee what skills would stand out to you?
De-escalation skills and mention of ‘research techniques’ raises questions, but nonetheless
stands out.
       4. What ideas for improvement do you have?
There seems to be room specifically with word choice. Vocab from the job itself is used and

there is definitely well-rounded coverage of what is required; however I would personally

go into more detail involving personal experience and qualification.
