The Student’s Perspective of Emotion-Management in Times of Crisis in St.

Mary’s

Academy of Ligao
Introduction

Emotional concerns are a potentially significant but largely unprioritized area of interest

addressed among students by respective institutions. While this area of study is mostly

unexplored, some studies suggest that emotions perform as an essential factor to

academic competence. Data suggests that adolescents are the most susceptible to

psychiatric problems, thus adolescents need support in coping with emotional and

behavioral problems.

There is a certain pattern or harmony to our everyday lives. Emotional equilibrium entails

constant tension, both positive and negative. We have good days, like a great field trip,

and bad times, like a miserable day at school. But we remain in a familiar range of

equilibrium or balance for the most part. We may be in a state of crisis when things that

are not part of what we see as natural happen to us. Nevertheless, knowing about news

that is shocking and sometimes daunting, such as that of a national tragedy or of a school

shooting. Perfect examples of such stressful incidents that can send us off our balance

include the death of a peer. Making sense of such devastating events can be challenging.
Significance of the Study

Emotional concerns are a definite issue that students face nowadays. There is a great need

for institutions like schools and universities to seek out and know more about this

prevalent problem and suggest and provide necessary solutions. This study aims to

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to determine the student respondents’ perspective of emotion-

management in times of crisis in St. Mary’s Academy of Ligao. In connection with this,

the study aims to answer the following questions.

1. What are the challenges of studying in times of crisis that lead to emotional

concerns?

2. What coping strategies are employed to resolve emotional concerns?

3. What measures may be proposed to alleviate emotional concerns?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research allowed respondents to conduct a self-assessment of their own coping

strategies to resolve emotional concerns. The respondents may not have answered

truthfully or have had a false impression of their own attitudes and abilities, as in any

study involving self-evaluation.

Theoretical Framework

I. Emotion Management in Crisis Situations

The researchers chose this research study as Theoretical Framework as

this journal also discusses and analyses emotion-management in times of

crises. In the study, the researcher tried to clarify and systematize some

contributions with regard to the main aspects of crisis situations that

impose the management of emotions, the correlation of certain social

emotions with the factors that trigger them and their related tendencies to

act, the essential elements of emotional experience, the differentiation of

appropriate emotional reactions to a crisis situation from the inappropriate

ones; the instances in which emotions can be managed, and the balance

between rationality and affectivity in the organization’s response to the

risks or crises which it faces. By means of logical correlations the

researchers arrived at the following conclusions. Regardless of the social

sphere in which the crisis makes itself felt, regardless of its type, phase or

damage control strategies, the rational control of emotions contributes

significantly to overcoming the crisis. Beyond the specificities, crises

involve digressions form the norms of rightful conduct, breaches of the

social norms that support institutions (as spontaneous order structures) and

maladaptive reactions to reality. They can be corrected through a good

management of emotions, with the caveat that we are not dealing with a

problem of knowledge, but rather with one of will and character. All

people can identify the adaptive emotional responses to a crisis, but only a

few prefer them and train assiduously to use them.
