Feature Article: SU Women's Golf Team
One of the newer, lesser known of the varsity sports at Susquehanna University is the women’s
golf team. Current players include Kira Hunter, Sarah Rieder, and Ella Moores. They are led by
Coach Kevin Jamieson, who joined the athletics department in the 2017-2018 season. Coach
Jamieson played college golf at McDaniel College, went on to coach at Bucknell University, and
is now the PGA professional and manager of Lost Creek Golf Course.
Hunter is a senior Strategic Communications-Advertising & Marketing major, who has been a
member of the team all of her years at SU and now acts as senior captain, maintaining the team
as a cohesive unit. A powerhouse on the tee, Rieder is junior Accounting major with a Finance
minor, and holds the varsity #2 spot. Finally, Moores is a Marketing major with a Public
Relations minor, taking the varsity #1 spot in her second year of play as a sophomore.
Notable alumna of the team includes Rachel Villano Sauerzopf ’10, who was a previous team
captain and led her team in her time at SU. Sauerzopf also holds program low 18-hole score of
84, which was tied by Moores in 2018. Another standout alum is Emily Rowlands ’15, who
holds the program’s two-day low score of 170. Rowlands tied for fourth and was named rookie
of the year at the 2013 Centennial Conference Championships. Finally, the most recent
graduate, Samantha Thompson ’18, who beat cancer during her junior year while still attending
school and competing when able. In her senior year, Thompson acted as team captain and was
recognized for her accomplishments both on and off the course, being named the Landmark
Conference women’s golf scholar athlete (the 31st Susquehannan to win such an award) and
As its history demonstrates, the women’s golf program is best characterized by the Shakespeare
quote, “though she be little, she is fierce,” flying under the radar of most at SU but packing a
punch on the course. This team culture was only magnified by Jamieson’s leadership, seeing
huge successes in last year’s (2018-2019) season. The team had a strong fall taking the
program’s first ever win and besting the school’s team-low score record. In 2019 Jamieson
established the team’s tradition of a spring break trip to kick-start the spring season. Women’s
golf also traveled to Prescott, Arizona to play a range of teams from different divisions while
preparing for competition on the east coast. The season culminated in a 4th place finish at the
Landmark Conference Championship, a program low score. Moores and Thompson highlighted
their seasons by earning first team and second team all-conference honors respectively.
This past year Moores saw her first collegiate win at the Penn State event in the fall, and the
team played a variety of matches to prepare for spring competition. Over the recent spring
break, women’s golf traveled to the McDaniel Invitational in Myrtle Beach, North Carolina.
This trip included a week of training and practice for the spring, ending with a match between
the three attending teams. Unfortunately, this would be the first and last tournament of the
season, cutting short a promising spring season. SU Athletics looks forward to the future
successes of Susquehanna’s women’s golf program, and expect that the loss of this season will
