Source PROS and CONS

Stability Pros: Only one test is prepared

(Test-retest)

Cons: Students may remember how they

responded to the items on the first
administration of the test and simply answer
correspondingly, thus overestimating the
reliability.
Equivalence Pros: Ideal for make up test or action
(Parallel Form) research , utilize pre and post test. Help to
evaluate the consistency of the results even
across alternative version.

Cons: It is difficult to prepare equal

m
form of test. It is more possibility of

er as
increasing error scores.

co
Scorer Consistency PROS : It measures the extent to which all parts

eH w
(Inter-rater agreement) of the test contribute equally to what is

being measured.

Internal Consistency Pros:You can use many ways to
Split-half) established internal consistency;

like test or survey.

Split-half is to measure the same

things are randomly split into two. It

is the correlation between the two

sets of scores.

Cons:More test questions or survey test

consistency.

internal consistency is good or not.

Decision Consistency Pros: Submission of grades

Cons: Students must assess themselves if they are

capable to pass
or to failed. Teacher gives a grade that deserves
to their students,
according to the result of an evaluation.

SCENARIO 1:
Ms. Loreto handles six Grade 5 classes in English. She would like to test their skills in spelling. She has
two options:
a. Oral spelling test – the teacher pronounces each word out loud and the students write down each
word.
b. Spelling bee-type test- each student is asked individually one-at-a-time to spell specific words out
loud.

In terms of practicality and efficiency, which one would you suggest? Why?

For me, in terms of practicality; I would suggest the oral spelling test. Obviously it is practical in its sense,
because on the part of the teacher, it is easier and quick. And on the part of the students, if they
wouldn’t know the correct spelling, they wouldn’t be intimidated because the teacher would just
get the overall score anyway.

m
Moreover, when efficiency is considered; I would also recommend the Spelling-bee type. It is more

er as
efficient for me, because, emotions of the learners took place during the recitation; as psychologist says,

co
when students are emotionally driven; let’s say a mixed of fear and satisfaction (fear, if they cannot

eH w
spell out correctly and satisfaction, if they made it well), their brain is more susceptible to retention of

o.
the matter.

SCENARIO 2:
Mr. Chua is preparing a final examination for his third year college students in Philippine Government
and Constitutions scheduled two weeks from now. He is handling six classes. He has no teaching
assistant. He realized that after the final examinations, he has three days to calculate the grades of his
o

students. He is thinking of giving extended response essays.

aC s
vi y re

What advice would you give him? Which aspect of practicality and efficiency should be prioritize? What
type of assessment should he consider?

I would like to suggest that if the teacher was already done with the topic he/she may give the exam in
ed d

advance or he/she may give different type of test like selected response formats so that it would he
ar stu

more easier for him/her to calculate the grade.

ACTIVITY 2: DO’S AND DONT’S

is

BEFORE THE TEST

Th

DO’S
1. Try and complete the bonus or supplemental questions.
2. Try and save time to complete one final review of your test before you submit it.
3. Arrive a class a few minutes early so that you can get situated comfortably in your seat.
sh

4. Get information about all aspects of the test as you can.

5. Set challenging, but realistic goals for each test.

DONT’S
1. Get caught up in how fast other classmates complete their test.
2. Allow yourself to get stuck on a question for too long.
