Aptitude Assignment -2

1. A can do a piece of work in 7 days working 9 hours a day and B can do it in 6 days working 7
hours a day. How long will they take to finish the work, working together 42/5 hours a
day?

Ans. A can do the work in 7 days by working 9 hours a day

⇒ 7 x 9 = 63 hours
B can do the work in 6 days by working 7 hours a day,
⇒ 7 × 6 = 42 hours
1
A's work of 1 hour =
63

1
B's work of 1 hour =
42

1 1
Together their work = +
63 42

105
=
63× 42

5
= work per hour
216

126
So together they take hours to complete the work.
5

42
Time taken if they are working together for  hours a day
5
126 42
=( )/( )
5 5
= 3 days

Therefore, they will take 3 days to complete the work, working together 42/5 hours a day.

2. A and B can finish a piece of work in 72 days, B and C in 120 days while A and C can
finish it in 90 days. In what time can A finish it alone?

1
Ans. A and B 's 1 day's work = ---(1)
72

1
B and C 's 1 day's work = ---(2)
120
1
A and C 's 1 day's work = ---(3)
90

On adding equations (1), (2) and (3),

1 1 1
2(A + B + C) = + +
72 120 90

5+3+4 1
⇒ (A + B + C)'s 1 day's work =  =
360 ×2 60

A's 1 day's work = (A + B + C)'s 1 day's work - (B + C)'s 1 day's work

1 1 2−1 1
= – = =
60 120 120 120

Hence A alone can finish the work in 120 days.

3. 10 men and 15 women finish a work in 5 days. One man alone finishes that work in 100 days.
In how many days will a woman finish the work?

Ans. Given that,

1
Given, (10 men's + 15 women's) 1 days' work =
5

Let the time taken by one woman to finish the work be x days.
1
Then, 1 woman's 1 days' work =
x

15
⇒ 15 women's 1 days' work =
x
According to the given condition,
1 15 1
⇒ + =
10 x 5

15 1 1 1
⇒ = − =
x 5 10 10

⇒x = 150 days.

Therefore, a woman can finish her work in 150 days.

4. A cistern can be filled in 9 hr but it takes 10 hr due to a leak. In how much time will the
leak empty the full cistern?

1
Ans. A pipe can fill in 9 hrs, work done will be
9
1
Cistern fills up in 10 hrs if there is a leak. So, work will be done in
10
1 1
Time taken to empty the cistern = −
9 10

1
=
90

It will be emptied in 90 hours.

5. One day Prakash started late for office by 1 hour, so he increased his normal Speed by 5
km/hr so that he reaches on Time. Find the normal Time taken to reach his office if his
office is at a distance of 60 km from his house.

Ans. Given,
The distance from Prakash’s house to office = 60km
Suppose the normal speed be x kmph,
60 60
⇒ + =1
x x+5

⇒ x2 + 5x - 300 = 0
⇒x2 + 20x - 15x - 300 =0
⇒ (x+20) (x-15) = 0
⇒x = 15
Speed increased = x+5 = 20kmph
60 60
So, normal time taken to reach his office = = = 4hours
x 15

6. Ram flew to Lanka in his Pushpak Vahan, at an average speed of 600 km/hr. On his way
back along with Sita, because of the heavier baggage that he was carrying, his speed
reduced to 400 km/hr. Find the average speed during the journey.

Ans. Given,
Avg. speed on the way to Lanka= 600km/hr
Avg. speed on the way back = 400km/hr
2 x 400 x 600
Avg. speed during the journey = = 480 km /hr.
400+600
Therefore, 480km/hr was the average speed during the journey.

7. A boat running upstream takes 4 hours 24 minutes to cover a certain distance, while it takes 2
hours to cover the same distance running downstream. What is the ratio between the speed
of the boat and speed of the water respectively?

Ans. Let the man's rate upstream be x kmph and that downstream be y kmph.
Then, distance covered upstream in 4 hrs 24 min = Distance covered downstream in 2 hrs.
2
⇒ x×4 × = y×2
5

22
⇒ x = 2y
5
11
⇒y= x
5
( y + x ) ( y− x)
∴Required ratio = :
2 2

16 1 6 1 8 3
=( x × ):( x × ) = : = 8:3
5 2 5 2 5 5
Therefore, the ratio between the speed of the boat and speed of the water respectively = 8:3

8. A thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 200 m. The thief starts running and the
policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman run at the rate of 10 km and 11 km per
hour respectively. What is the distance between them after 6 minutes?

Ans. Relative speed of the thief and policeman = (11 – 10) km/hr = 1 km/hr
1 1
Distance covered in 6 minutes = ( ) x 6 km   = km = 100 m
60 10

Therefore, Distance between the thief and policeman = (200 – 100) m = 100 m.

9. Two persons start running simultaneously around a circular track of length 300 m from the
same point at speeds of 15 km/hr and 25 km/hr. When will they meet for the first time
anywhere on the track if they are moving in opposite directions?

Ans. Time taken to meet for the first time anywhere on the track
Length of the track
= Relative speed
300
5
( 15+25 ) ×
= 18

300× 18
= 40 ×5
= 27
Therefore, they will meet when it is 27 seconds.

10. A train overtakes two girls who are walking in the opposite direction in which the train is
going at the rate of 3 km/h and 6km/h and passes them completely in 36 seconds and 30
seconds respectively. The length of the train is:

Ans. Let the length of the train e x meter, and let the speed of train be y km/h, then
x=(y+3) ×518×36x --- (1) and
x=(y+6) ×518×30x ---(2)
From equation (1) and (2), we get
y = 12 km/h
Therefore, x = (y+3) ×5/18×36x
  ⇒ x = 150 m
The length of the train is 150m.
