Cubes and Cube Roots

Let’s Learn
The number 1729 is known as the Hardy- Ramanujan number that
can be expressed as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.
1729 = 1728 + 1 = 123 + 13 and 1729 = 1000 + 729 = 103 + 93.

Q4. Find the smallest natural number by which 21296 must be divided so that the quotient
becomes a perfect cube. Find the cube root of the number obtained.
Sol: 21296 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 11 × 11 × 11
Therefore 21296 must be divided by 2 to make it a perfect cube.
3
Thus the number is 10648 and √10648 = 22

Q5. Parikshit makes a cuboid of plastic of sides 25 cm  10 cm  8 cm. How many such
cuboids will he need to form a cube?
Sol: Volume of the cuboid is = 25 x 10 x 8 = 2000 𝑐𝑚3
Volume of the required cube = 5x5x5x2x2x2x2x2x2= 8000𝑐𝑚3
8000
Therefore required number of cuboids = 2000 = 4

Q6. Is 68600 a perfect cube? If not, find the smallest number by which 68600 must be
multiplied to get a perfect cube.
Sol: 68600 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 x 5 x 7 x 7 x 7
Hence 68600 is not a perfect cube. It should be multiplied by 5 to make it a perfect cube.

Q7. Guess the cube root of the following without any actual factorization. (show the steps
used)
(i) 314432:
STEP 1: Form groups of three starting from the rightmost digit of 314432. In this case
one group is 432 and the other group is 314.
STEP 2: Take 432. The digit 2 is at its one’s place. We take the one’s place of the
required cube root as 8.
STEP 3: Take the other group, i.e., 314. Cube of 6 is 216 and cube of 7 is 343. 314 lies
between 216 and 343. The smaller number between 6 and 7 is 6.
Thus at tens place of the cube root we will take 6.
3
Thus √314432= 68

(ii) 857375: 95

(iii) 157464: 54
Q8. The volume of a cubical box is 19683 cm3. Find the length of its side in metres.
Sol: We know that the volume of a cubical box = 𝑙 3
Therefore we have
𝑙 3 = 19683
3
𝑙 = √19683
Thus the side of the cubical box = 27 cm= 0.27 m
