From the swerving throw to the timing of the up and down motion, winnowing is a complex art
in itself. As a kid, I was always fascinated on how it sounds like a gusty rain and how this
process salvages good grains, especially when we were drying coffee beans and rice grains,
from the bad ones. And growing in a rural area seems to be a required skill to possess when
you don’t want a single grain turn into waste. By just using gravity’s pull and physics, tossing
up in the wind could result to recovering a better yield and remove the particles that do not
belong.
Just like in the time of Habakkuk, God winnowed His people. He wanted to remove evil within
His own family through His divine sovereignty and judgment. With a heavy heart, Habakkuk
stood to ask God for answers as the people of Judah embraced evil and neglected God’s
Word. God’s judgment, as revealed in chapter two of Habakkuk, was particularly for the woes.
Woe is for those who in their financial lending, have rigged the system to make money on the
back of the poor, those who value self-preservation and self-protection, those who build towns
whose enterprise is their own glory, and those who corrupted and perverted justice.
It’s a wrenching truth about the heart and soul of Christian community today. We are
bombarded with all the glory that the world offers, yet leave social justice behind doors. We
have filled our hearts with self-preservation programs in order to escape our fears of God’s
judgment. We forget that all the unforeseen things in this world including the natural
calamities, pandemic, and inevitable changes—are God’s winnowing to preserve and purify
His people. God’s calling us—the suffering people—to show faith that God’s purposes for the
world we live in will at last prevail.
