INTERVIEW REPORT
ENGLISH TEACHER FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

Interviewees : Harni Khaidir, S.Pd


SD NEGERI 147 PEKANBARU

Background:
 Was born in Kuantan Singigi, 22 November 1976.
 Address in Jl. Anggrek, Mutiara Indah Residence.
 A mother of 4 children and has been a teacher for ± 21 years and has taught at
SD NEGERI 147 Pekanbaru for 14 years.

Experiences:
Teaching english for primary school grade 5 and grade 6. As well as
homeroom teacher for grade 5B. Now has concurrent duties as a student
representative in the curriculum field in SD Negeri 147 Pekanbaru.

Technique that used in the class:


There are two methods she uses in teaching, for grade 5 ma'am Harni focuses
on using a lot of media when teaching in the class. First method, the percentage of
80% is learning while playing and 20% is for testing students' abilities. For
heterogeneous and dense classroom conditions, Ma'am Harni uses a projector, power
point and a whiteboard.
At the beginning of teaching for the first meeting was spent on a placement test. Ask
individual questions to find out the background of students both in academia and in
their environment.
And for the superior class ma'am harni applies 50% learning while playing
and 50% student ability tests. "it is applied with a lot of consideration", she said.
Meanwhile, for grade 6 itself, ma'm harni does not really focus on the book learning
curriculum that the school uses. She argues that referring to the book chapter material
is very ineffective because what grade 6 children need is material strengthening and
mastery of the material.
But even so the method between classes is different, the application is different even
though later for the mid-semester and end-semester exams using the same exam
questions for objective assessment.
For the next meeting, she usually starts learning by making students enjoy it
by showing a media which of course inserts the theme of today's lesson. In a month
of meetings there are 2 meetings which are spent just learning and playing without
any tests due to insufficient time. However, for the new regulation with the
elimination of learning english in elementary school, she emphasized that it is very
difficult to take advantage of the learning time that has been cut. Although it hasn't
been eliminated for the upper class but it's been very difficult.
For the current situation of the corona-19, she said the method she had used so
far was very difficult to apply. Very limited and therefore she only provides self
explanatory videos, provide a yutub link, provide a google link and for grade 6 a free
zenius apk is given because there is a lot of discussion about english questions there.

The barrier in teaching the yls:


The barrier in teaching for primary school is very diverse. Starting from
student motivation, weak fighting power of students who want to play too much as
well as new regulations that cause students in grades 1, 2, 3, 4 not to learn basic
english which results in grades 5 and 6 having a very hard time catching up. And now
there is corona which requires learning from home.

The solusion to solve students problems:


1. It takes teacher creativity in teaching
2. Extra patience in repeating explanations so that students can understand the
learning
3. As much as possible to know the background of each student because of the
various applications in students
4. And for this time of the corona-19 pandemic, teachers must compromise with
parents so that students learn can be a maximum. Don't just give assignments
without including learning videos so that students can really be able to
understand the material.
