3. MTCO
3.1 FAULT MESSAGES

The MTCO monitors the operation of the system

and automatically displays a message in the
event of a fault in a component or in its operation.
1
Messages and recommendations can appear
immediately after closing of the tray or each time
the fault occurs.
Time display flashes
If the time display is flashing, this means that the
MTCO has automatically switched over at the
beginning or end of summer and indicates that
disc registration time for the tachograph discs
needs to be changed to the correct time.
Fault message codes
If a fault occurs in the MTCO, a red LED will light
up on the instrument panel. A fault code will then
flash in the MTCO display. The fault code is
stored in the MTCO memory. Certain faults will
also be recorded on the tachograph disc. The
fault messages are divided into 'operating faults'
and 'system and unit faults'.

Operating faults

Resetting error messages

In case of an operating fault, take the necessary
action and acknowledge the message by
pressing any key. The standard display appears
again.
If there are several messages, acknowledge the
different messages successively.

Note:
With certain messages, the LED on the
instrument panel remains lit, indicating the
existence of another operating fault or error. Only
after the cause of the fault has been rectified will
the function warning lamp automatically go out.

3.2 RECORDING OF FAULTS ON THE TACHOGRAPH DISC

Power failure
After a power failure, when power is restored, the
unit will show a line (1) on the tachograph disc
shortly after driving away. 1
Interruption of the signal
Fault in signal transmission between the
tachograph and the signal sensor. As soon as the
vehicle is stationary, the mark (2) appears.
During driving, speed registration is resumed.
Another possible mark is (3), which appears
immediately after the occurrence of the fault and
remains until the cause has been remedied.
Unit fault
Faults in the registration system may cause the
following incorrect registrations:
- mark (4), fault in the speed registration
system;
- marks (5) and (6), fault in the registration
system for the time groups and distance.

The VIC is an electronic unit that collects
information and activates vehicle functions. The 8 9
VIC is incorporated into the CAN network. The
VIC receives and sends out information via the
CAN connections: the I-CAN (information CAN)
and the V-CAN (vehicle CAN).
The VIC also receives information via analogue
and digital inputs.
This information comes from sensors and 6 4
switches. On the basis of the information
received, the VIC determines whether or not a
function should be activated, and whether the 7
driver should be informed via DIP-4. 2 5
In the case of faults, the VIC determines which
fault has the highest priority and activates DIP-4
to display the appropriate warning.
The VIC has different types of inputs and outputs:
- digital outputs;
- digital inputs;
- analogue inputs; K100878

- multiplex-connections (CAN and K-line).

All VIC inputs and outputs are protected against
short-circuit to earth and to power supply
(positive).
When the ignition is turned off, the VIC goes into
sleep mode. In sleep mode, most functions of the
VIC are turned off to reduce the power
consumption of the VIC.
The VIC comes out of sleep mode when the
following systems/components are activated:
- CDS (central door-locking system);
- door switches;
- alarm system;
- switch for hazard warning lamps;
- alarm clock;
- ignition.

2.2 POWER SUPPLIES

The functions are divided into three groups, each

of which has its own power supply. If one of the
power supplies fails, the function group it supplies
will also fail.
The microprocessor automatically obtains its
power supply from one of the three fuse-
2 protected groups.

CAN communication: vehicle systems

The VIC communicates with other electronic
vehicle systems via the C01 and C02 V-CAN
connections and the C14 and C15 V-CAN
connections. Via this connection there is an
exchange of data such as:
- a request to activate a fault message on the
instrument panel;
- a request to activate the ASR indication on
2 -
the instrument panel;
a request to display the automatic gearbox
gear indicator on the instrument panel;
- a request to display the coolant temperature
on the instrument panel;
- check of the engine management system
and immobiliser chassis numbers. A red
warning is shown in the display if one of the
chassis numbers does not match.
The VIC also monitors the CAN. The VIC checks
whether other electronic units are transmitting
messages. If not, the VIC displays the relevant
fault message on the instrument panel. The
following units are monitored by the VIC:
- UPEC
- ECS-DC3
- ABS
- AGC-A
- Intarder EST-42
- AS Tronic
The VIC communicates with the DIP-4 instrument
panel (D899) via the D17 and D19 I-CAN
connections. Via this connection there is an
exchange of data such as:
- activation of the various meters on the
instrument panel (air pressure, coolant
temperature, fuel level etc.);
- operation of the menu in the master display
of the instrument panel via the Menu Control
Switch (D904);
- activation of the various displays on the
instrument panel (time, temperature etc.);
- activation of the various warning indicators
on the instrument panel.

Direction indicators

Left
When the left direction indicator switch (C832) is
operated, the voltage supply is connected to pin
D38 of the VIC. The VIC then emits a pulsating
signal via pins E07, E09 and A07. The direction
indicator lights come on whenever a pulse arrives
at pins E07, E09 and A07 of the VIC.
Right 2
When the right direction indicator switch (C832) is
operated, the voltage supply is connected to pin
D39 of the VIC. The VIC then emits a pulsating
signal via pins E04, E08 and A08. The direction
indicator lamps come on whenever a pulse
arrives at pins E04, E08 and A08 of the VIC.
Instrument panel indication lights
The VIC also emits a signal to the instrument
panel (D899) via the I-CAN. The prime mover
warning lights and the trailer warning lights come
on and the simulated noise of a clicking relay is
audible if the direction indicator system is working
correctly.
If there is no trailer attached to the vehicle, the
VIC recognises this after the first time either the
left or the right indicator light has been activated.
The appropriate trailer indicator light illuminates
when the indicator is first activated; after that, the
VIC no longer activates the trailer indicator lights.
Hazard warning lights
Voltage before ignition (1000) is present on the
hazard warning light switch (C765) via fuse
(E108).
When the warning light switch (C765) is
activated, the supply voltage is applied to pin D23
of the VIC.
The VIC now transmits a pulsating signal via pins
A07, A08, E04, E07, E08 and E09 causing these
lights to flash simultaneously. It also causes the
light in the switch to flash via pin E07.
The hazard warning light switch has priority over
the direction indicator switch.
When the vehicle lights are switched on, the
supply voltage is applied to the warning light
switch (C765) via fuse (E117) causing the
visibility lighting in the switch to come on.

Control functions VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95

Alarm system
When the alarm system is switched on, switched
off and when it is active, the electronic unit of the
alarm system (D911) applies a square-wave
voltage to pin D23 and pin C36 of the VIC. The
VIC ensures that the warning lights are activated
in the correct manner.
Diagnostics
2 A prime mover with trailer has 6 groups for the
direction indicators:

1. Prime mover front left (2 lamps)

2. Prime mover rear left (3 lamps)
3. Prime mover front right (2 lamps)
4. Prime mover rear right (3 lamps)
5. Trailer left (2 lamps)
6. Trailer right (2 lamps)
In order for the system to function correctly, all
lamps must be 24 V/21 W. The service life of the
VIC may be affected aversely by connecting
additional lamps to a group.
When the system is functioning correctly, the four
warning lights on the DIP-4 instrument panel
- two for the prime mover and two for the trailer -
will flash in unison. In addition, the simulated
noise of a clicking relay can be heard.
A fault may be caused by:
- overload;
- underload.
Underload
If a bulb blows in a particular group or the electric
circuit is interrupted, the VIC will recognise which
group is affected from the current strength.
When the direction indicator is switched on, the
VIC will activate the indicator light for the relevant
group at double frequency. The simulated noise
of a clicking relay is also audible at double
frequency. However, the other direction indicator
lights in that particular group will flash at normal
frequency.
If a whole group on the prime mover is not
working (due to a collision, for example), the
warning light flashes at double frequency, as for
a blown bulb and the simulated noise of a clicking
relay is audible at double frequency. If a whole
group is not working on the trailer, the relevant
warning light will likewise flash just once when
activated and then remain off.

VIC
VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95 Control functions

Overload
A group may be overloaded due to short-
circuiting or excessive load.
If a group is overloaded, the VIC will detect that
the current is too high upon activation, and a
smart-FET prevents the relevant group from
being activated again.
On a prime mover, when one group is
overloaded, the warning light will flash at double
frequency. The simulated noise of a clicking relay
is also audible at double frequency. If one group
2
of the trailer is overloaded, the warning light will
flash once when activated and then remain off.

Speed I (low speed)

When the windscreen wiper switch (C832) is set
to the low position, a voltage will be present at pin
D09. The VIC (D900) connects pin C50 to earth
and relay G237 is energised as a result.
Speed II (high speed)
When the windscreen wiper switch (C832) is set
to the high position, the relays (G236 and G237)
2 are connected to earth via the windscreen wiper
switch. The VIC is bypassed in this position.
Intermittent wipe
When the windscreen wiper switch (C832) is set
to intermittent, a voltage will be present at pin
D37. The VIC (D900) connects pin C50 to earth
and relay G237 is energised as a result. When pin
D32 of the VIC is connected to the power supply
via the cut-off switch (B000) in the windscreen
wiper motor, the earth from pin C50 is
disconnected, so the relay (G237) is no longer
energised. When pin D32 is earthed again via the
cut-off switch, pin C50 will be earthed again after
a few seconds, so that the relay (G237) is re-
energised. This starts the cycle again. The
standard interval is 5 seconds. Depending on the
VIC software, the interval may be changed
between 1 and 15 seconds or 1 and 20 seconds
using the windscreen wiper switch.
Increasing/decreasing the interval:
- switch to intermittent position;
- wait until windscreen wipers are in rest
position;
- switch windscreen wiper switch to zero
position for a period of between 1 and 15
seconds or 1 and 20 seconds;
- switch to intermittent position.
Wash/wipe
If a voltage is briefly present at pin D33 via
windscreen wiper switch (C832) and this then
ceases (windscreen wiper switch C832 no longer
operated), connection point C50 is connected to
earth for a specific period of time. As a result, the
relay (G237) is energised and the windscreen
wipers perform 1 wiper stroke. If a voltage is
present for approximately 2 seconds at pin D33
via the windscreen wiper switch (C832), a voltage
will be applied to connection point A01, which
activates the windscreen washer motor (B001).
After approximately 1 second, C50 is connected
to earth for a specific period of time. As a result,
the relay (G237) is energised and the windscreen
wiper motor will be operated.

VIC
VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95 Control functions

Note:
If a voltage is present on the VIC for the low
windscreen speed or when the wiper is in the
intermittent position and the windscreen wiper
motor (B000) does not run (e.g. due to a faulty
fuse), then the relay will no longer be energised
after approx. 1 second. Before the windscreen
wiper motor (B000) can be re-activated via the
relay, the windscreen wiper switch (C832) must
be turned to the "0" position. If the VIC fails for
any reason, the high windscreen wiper speed is
2
still available.

Headlamp washer
If a voltage is briefly present at pin D33 via the
windscreen wiper switch (C832) and this then
ceases (windscreen wiper switch C832 no longer
operated) and the light switch is in the dipped
beam position (with the power supply connected
to C05), connection point C48 is energised for a
specific period of time. As a result, the relay
(G238) is energised and the headlamp washer
will be activated.

Low range downshift protection valve

The VIC includes low range downshift protection.
This protects the gearbox, the clutch and the
engine from incorrect gear changing. If the driver
tries to downshift from the high to the low range
when the vehicle speed is still too high, it will not
be possible to change down to the low range.

The VIC receives the vehicle speed signal via the

2 V-CAN. If the vehicle speed is lower than the
programmed value (this programmed value
depends on the engine type and gearbox model),
a voltage will be present at pin B19. This
energises the low range downshift protection
valve (B079) and, as a result, it is possible to
change down to the low range. If the vehicle
speed exceeds the programmed value, the power
supply to pin B19 is interrupted and, as a result,
the low range downshift protection valve (B079)
will no longer be energised. It is then no longer
possible to downshift to the low range.
Gearbox gate protection
The VIC includes a gate protection system. This
protection system only operates in the low range
and protects the gearbox, the clutch and the
engine by preventing the downshifts from the
third or fourth (gate 3-4) gear to the first or second
gear (gate 1-2) if the vehicle speed is too high.
This problem occurs if the driver fails to switch the
range-change switch over to the high group using
the gear lever before shifting to gate 5-6. The
vehicle speed signal is sent via the V-CAN. If the
vehicle speed is lower than the programmed
value (this programmed value depends on the
engine type and gearbox model), no voltage will
be present at pin B21. If the range-change switch
(E561) is closed (low range selected), the gate
protection valve (B293) is not energised and, as
a result, it is possible to downshift to gate 1-2. If
the vehicle speed exceeds the programmed
value, voltage will be present at pin B21 and, as
a result, it is not possible to downshift to gate 1-2.
Engine speed control application connector
Different signals can arrive at pins D05, C19,
C17, C18, D06 and D07 of the VIC via the engine
speed control application connector (A068). The
VIC sends messages via the V-CAN to the
engine management system.

VIC
VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95 Control functions

PTO 1
By operating the PTO 1 operation switch (C750),
voltage is applied (after ignition) to pin D27 of the
VIC. This voltage can also come from the engine
speed control application connector (A068).
Depending on the programmed customer
parameter settings, the VIC applies a voltage to
the PTO operation valve (B245) via pin B23.
Examples of customer parameter settings are:
- parking brake status; 2
- service brake status;
- vehicle speed status;
- clutch status;
- engine speed status.
These switching conditions may be changed
using DAVIE XD. When the PTO is activated, the
PTO control switch (F087) is operated and the
VIC receives an earth signal at pin B14. The VIC
then sends a signal via the I-CAN to DIP-4 to
activate the "PTO active" warning indicator. The
time that the PTO is in use is stored in the VIC.
The VIC sends the time to the master display via
the I-CAN.
Control switch for splitter signalling
When the splitter is switched to low, pin B20 is
connected to earth. The VIC activates the
warning indicator on the instrument panel via the
I-CAN.
Parking brake switch
When the parking brake is engaged, a voltage is
present at pin D26 of the VIC. The VIC activates
the warning indicator on the instrument panel via
the I-CAN.
EMAS vehicle speed dependent signal
The VIC receives the speed signal from the EBS
unit via CAN. Below the defined speed, the VIC
switches output C47 to high. Above the defined
speed, the VIC switches output C47 to low.
FAG traction control
The VIC switches the supply voltage for the FAG
traction mode relay (G095) via this output. Below
30 km/h, the VIC switches output B24 to 24 V.
Above 30 km/h, the VIC switches output B24 to
earth. It is therefore impossible to activate the
traction mode above 30 km/h.
"Engine running" signal
When the engine is running, the VIC applies a
voltage to pin C042. This activates the D+
microrelay (G301) and the starting interrupter
microrelay (G303/G372). This signal is also sent
to the electronic unit of the Airtronic D2 cab
heater (D871/D871).

PTO 2
By operating the PTO 2 operation switch (C751),
a voltage is applied (after ignition) to pin D22 of

Clutch protection
The VIC receives the vehicle speed signal and
the clutch status signal via the V-CAN. An earth
signal is supplied to pin B13 via the gearbox
switch for gate 3/4 (F120) to indicate that third or
fourth gear has been engaged. There is
approximately 0 V on pin C11 of the VIC unit
when the ignition is turned on and the low-range
switch (E595) is in the "low" position (switch
closed). When the low-range switch is put into
"high" position (switch open), there will be
2
approximately 8 V on pin C11. The VIC unit
recognises the position of the low-range switch
as a result of the change in voltage at pin C11.
Brake light relay
The VIC receives the VSC active brake signal via
the V-CAN, connection point C51 is connected to
earth by the VIC unit and the brake light relay
(G036) is energised. The power supply via
connection point 87a to the UPEC-ECU is

Fuel level
The fuel level is determined by means of a sensor
(F608). The fuel level sensor consists of a
variable resistor. The VIC compares the value of
the sensor signal to the parameter stored in the
memory. The microprocessor "calculates" the
fuel level and via the I-CAN activates the
instrument panel, which in turn activates the fuel
gauge. If the fuel level has dropped into the
reserve range, a yellow warning light illuminates
in the fuel gauge.
2
Ambient temperature
The ambient temperature is determined by
means of a sensor (F651). The sensor used is of
the NTC (negative temperature coefficient) type.
The VIC compares the value of the sensor signal
to the parameter stored in the memory. The
microprocessor "calculates" the ambient
temperature and activates the instrument panel
via the I-CAN.
Glow system
UPEC glow circuit
The UPEC unit determines the necessary
preheating and afterglow time on the basis of
various input signals. Voltage is applied to pin
C08 of the VIC via the glow relay (G014). The VIC
activates the "glowing" warning indicator on the
instrument panel via the I-CAN.
ECS-DC3 glow circuit
The ECS-DC3 unit determines the necessary
preheating and afterglow time on the basis of
various input signals. Voltage is applied to pin
C08 of the VIC via the glow relay (G014). The VIC
activates the "glowing" warning indicator on the
instrument panel via the I-CAN.
ECAS
The ECAS unit (D802/D851) sends a signal to pin
B9 of the VIC to indicate that the chassis height is
not at the normal driving level. The VIC activates
the "normal driving level" warning indicator on the
instrument panel via the I-CAN.
Differential lock
When a differential lock control switch (F006,
F007, F038 and/or F050) is closed, the VIC
receives an earth signal at C34. The VIC
activates the "differential lock" warning indicator
on the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
Intarder
When the ZF intarder is activated, the intarder
unit (D902) emits a signal and the VIC receives a
signal at pin D25. The VIC activates the "intarder
active" warning indicator on the instrument panel
via the I-CAN. If the braking power is reduced by
the retarder (e.g. because the temperature of the
retarder coolant is too high), the warning indicator
flashes.

Electronic systems
When a fault occurs in one of the following
systems, this is communicated to the VIC via the
relevant electronic unit. The VIC activates the
instrument panel via the I-CAN. In the master
display of the instrument panel, the relevant
indicator comes on with an accompanying text.
These systems are:
-
-
ECAS-2/ECAS-3;
EBS/ABS; 2
- AGC-A;
- EST-42;
- AGS;
- EMAS;
- ECS-DC3;
- UPEC;
- alternator.
Steering system
A dual-circuit steering system has two steering oil
pumps. Steering oil pump 1 is actuated by the
engine and steering oil pump 2 by the gearbox. If
there is no oil flow in one of the circuits, the VIC
receives an earth signal at pin C30 or C31. The
VIC activates the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
The relevant warning signal comes on in the
master display of the instrument panel. The VIC
receives the MTCO speed signal via V-CAN and
the "engine running" signal internally.
Water separator
CF65
If the sensor detects that there is too much water
in the fuel filter, pin C12 of the VIC receives a
voltage signal. The VIC activates the instrument
panel via the I-CAN. The relevant warning signal
comes on in the master display of the instrument
panel.
CF75/85 and XF95
If the sensor detects that there is too much water
in the fuel filter, pin C12 of the VIC receives an
earth signal. The VIC activates the instrument
panel via the I-CAN. The relevant warning signal
comes on in the master display of the instrument
panel.
Coolant level
The coolant level sensor (F656) consists of two
micro-switches (reed switches), connected in
parallel with two resistors. These micro-switches
are influenced by a magnetic field positioned
outside the sensor. If the coolant level drops, the
micro-switches will be closed by a float fitted with
a permanent magnet.

The "alarm switch" detects that the level is too low

and the "daily inspection" switch detects that the
coolant must be topped up at the inspection
stage. The VIC uses the resistance value to
detect the status of the micro-switches.

If the coolant level is too low, the VIC activates

the instrument panel via the I-CAN. In the master
display of the instrument panel, the red warning
symbol comes on with an accompanying text. If
the coolant level is too low during the inspection
stage, the VIC activates the instrument panel via
the I-CAN. In the master display of the instrument
panel, the orange warning symbol comes on with
an accompanying text.
2 Air pressure sensor
The air pressure sensor for circuits 1 and 2
(F652) is a dual sensor with two output signals.
The VIC receives the output voltage from circuit 2
at pin D11 and the output voltage from circuit 1 at
pin D16. Via the I-CAN, the VIC activates the
instrument panel which activates the two air
pressure gauges. If the air pressure in one of the
circuits is too low, the VIC activates the
instrument panel via the I-CAN. In the master
display of the instrument panel, the warning
symbol comes on with an accompanying text.
Alternator
If the alternator (A513) is not charging correctly,
no voltage is received at pin D29 of the VIC. The
VIC activates the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
In the master display of the instrument panel, the
relevant warning symbol comes on with an
accompanying text.
Cab lock
If the cab lock is not fully closed, the proximity
switch (F616) of the cab lock will be closed. Pin
B16 of the VIC is switched to earth. The VIC then
sends a message to the instrument panel, which
activates the "cab not locked" warning.
Engine oil pressure
If the engine oil pressure is too low, pin B15 of the
VIC is switched to earth by the oil pressure switch
(F011). The VIC then sends a message to the
instrument panel, which activates the "engine oil
pressure too low" warning.
Brake pad wear switch
If one of the brake pads is too thin, the circuit is
interrupted at pin B17 of the VIC by the relevant
brake pad wear switch (F107/F108/F109/F110/
F111/F112/F113/F114). The VIC will send a
message to the instrument panel, which will then
activate the "brake lining wear" indicator.

Engine oil level check

The oil level can be checked in the vehicle info
menu using the Menu Control Switch. This
function is only active when the ignition is on and
the engine is not running. It is necessary to wait
for a specific period after the engine is switched
off before the oil level can be re-checked. For
checking the engine oil, see "Technical data".
When the oil level in the sump changes, the
resistance of the oil level sensor changes (F673).
The resistance value is compared to the
2
parameters stored in the memory by the
microprocessor. The microprocessor "calculates"
the oil level and, depending on the oil level,
activates the master display of the instrument
panel via the I-CAN.

Parking brake
In order to avoid dangerous situations when the
driver leaves the vehicle without him having
engaged the parking brake, a warning symbol will
be activated on DIP for vehicles with production

The warning is active when:
- the parking brake is not engaged with
"ignition on" (in this situation, parking brake
switch (F000) is open (0 volt on pin D26 of
the VIC unit)) and when the door is opened
(24 V on pin D01 of the VIC unit via the door
switch).

Work lamp
When the vehicle ignition is on, a voltage is
applied to the work lamp switch (C725). When the
work lamp switch is turned on, a voltage is
applied to the work lamp (C071), but the VIC also
receives a voltage signal at pin C09. The VIC
activates the "work lamp" warning indicator on
the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
CDS-3/alarm
When the doors are locked or unlocked, the CDS-
2
3 unit (D905) sends a signal via pin 2 to the alarm
unit (D911), turning the alarm on or off. A
message is also sent to pin C13 of the VIC
indicating that the doors are being locked or
unlocked by remote control. The VIC switches the
interior lighting on or off. During locking, the CDS-
3 unit also sends a message indicating that
locking was successful. If locking was not
successful, a message is sent to the VIC after
three attempts to indicate that locking failed. The
interior lighting will remain switched on. Fault
messages are stored in the VIC.
Front fog lights
The fog lights can only be activated when the
marker lights are switched on. When the fog light
switch (C727) is operated, the VIC receives a
voltage signal at pin D34 from one of the fog
lights. The VIC then switches on the "front fog
lights on" indicator on the instrument panel via the
I-CAN.
Rear fog lights
The VIC receives a voltage signal at pin D35
when the spring-loaded fog light switch (C727/
C773) is operated. The VIC then activates the
rear fog lights relay (G005) via pin C40 and, as a
result, the rear fog lights come on provided
dipped beam is switched on. The VIC then
switches on the "rear fog lights on" indicator on
the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
Interior lighting
When the door on the driver's side or the co-
driver's side is opened, the door switch (E514 or
E515) is actuated. This activates the cab step
lighting on the driver's or co-driver's side (C062 or
C063) and the VIC receives a voltage signal at
pin D01. The VIC then turns on the cab lighting
(C119/C192), provided the switch is in the correct
position, activating it via pin A04.
When the door on the driver's or the co-driver's
side is closed, there is no longer a voltage at
connection point D01. Connection point A04 will
continue to be supplied with a supply voltage for
around another 9 seconds following this.

VIC
Control functions VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95

If the vehicle ignition is turned on, a voltage is

applied to pin E01 and the interior lighting goes
off immediately. When CDS-3 (D905) sends a
signal to pin C13 to unlock the doors, the interior
lighting goes on immediately. When CDS-3
(D905) sends a signal to pin C13 that the doors
have been correctly locked, the interior lighting
goes off immediately.

2 Marker lights
When the marker lights are on (voltage at pin
C07) with the ignition off (no voltage at pin E01)
and one of the doors is opened (voltage at pin
D01), the VIC activates the buzzer on the
instrument panel via the I-CAN.
Dipped beam
When dipped beam is switched on, relay G001 is
activated and a voltage is applied to pin C05.
When the lights are turned off, output C40 is also
switched off and, as a result, the rear fog light
relay G005 is de-energised.
Main beam
When main beam is switched on, relay G002 is
activated and a voltage is applied to pin C06. The
VIC activates the "main beam" warning indicator
on the instrument panel via the I-CAN.
Instrument lighting dimming
When the vehicle lights are switched on (position
I), an input voltage is applied to pin C07 of the
VIC. As a result, the instrument lighting dimming
potentiometer (C763) is supplied with a voltage
via pin D14. The voltage at pin D14 is higher or
lower depending on the position of the
potentiometer. The VIC dims the lighting of the
MCS switch (D904) and the cigar lighter (B030)
depending on the potentiometer position. The
output signal at pin C49 is a duty cycle signal.
The VIC also activates the instrument panel via
the I-CAN and, as a result, the lighting of the
meters, the displays and the warning indicators is
dimmed. If the vehicle lights are not on but the
ignition is turned on, the MCS switch (D904) and
cigar lighter (B030) lighting is switched on. In this
case, the lighting cannot be dimmed.

4.5 INSPECTION OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

There are two inspection tables:

- inspection table for signal and voltage
measurements;
- inspection table for measuring resistances
and activating components.

2 Explanation of inspection table

The inspection tables are divided into a number
of columns.
These columns may contain symbols and/or
abbreviations.

"MEASUREMENT" COLUMN
Symbol/abbreviation Explanation
V AC Measurement of AC voltage
V DC Measurement of DC voltage
A Current measurement
 Resistance measurement
% Measurement of duty cycle
Hz Frequency measurement

"READINGS" COLUMN
Symbol/abbreviation Explanation
* For the readings, see "Technical data".
 Open connection

Note:
The readings obtained with the BOB universal
test unit may differ slightly from the readings
listed in the "readings" column, due to the contact
resistance in the BOB universal test unit and the
BOB wiring harness.

Inspection table for signal and voltage

measurements
1. Switch off the vehicle ignition.
Remove the electronic unit connectors.
2. Fit the VIC BOB cable harness
(DAF no. 1329461) to the BOB universal test
unit (DAF no. 1329433).
3. Attach the connectors of the BOB cable
harness to the VIC electronic unit and attach
the connectors of the VIC electronic unit to
the connection terminals of the BOB cable
harness.

3
There is a microprocessor on the instrument
panel. 8 9
The microprocessor receives information from
the VIC and compares the values with the
parameters stored in the memory (these are set
in the factory).
Depending on the value of the incoming
information, the microprocessor then activates
the relevant meter, lamp and/or display.
6 4
The DIP is incorporated into the CAN-network,
whereby the DIP receives and sends out
information via the CAN connections, the I-CAN 7
(Information CAN) and the V-CAN (Vehicle CAN). 2 5
All information apart from speed, engine RPM,
odometer and trip meter are sent via the VIC.
The VIC collects information via the V-CAN, input
signals (sensors/switches) and the MCS (Menu
Choice Switch), and makes up CAN messages
out of these, which are sent to the DIP via the
I-CAN.
The speed signal is sent by the tachograph via K100878

the V-CAN and the engine RPM signal is sent by

the electronic unit from the engine via the V-CAN.

2.2 MASTER DISPLAY

The master display is a dot matrix screen. It

displays both text and symbols.
The master display has a menu structure which
allows the driver to request the necessary
function or information. This menu structure is
activated by the MCS via the VIC.
The display replaces the CWS (Central Warning
System). The display consists of three different
fields: an indication bar, an information screen

3 (yellow or red) and an information screen (yellow)

Start-up phase
The DIP is activated via the VIC when the ignition
is switched on (engine not yet running) and the
start-up screen appears in the main display. The
following warning symbols, if present, are then
displayed:

1. Oil pressure (red)

2. Alternator voltage (red)
3. Prime mover ABS (yellow)
4. Prime mover EBS (yellow)

During the start-up phase, the "STOP" warning

3
lamp and the acoustic signal are not activated.
Approximately 3 seconds after switching on the
ignition, the yellow warning symbols will
disappear. During these 3 seconds, no other
warnings can be displayed.
The red warning symbols should disappear from
the screen approximately 2.5 seconds after the
engine has been started.
After 2.5 seconds, if the oil pressure or charging
voltage is still too low, the warning screen will
become active and the relevant red warning
symbol is displayed with the accompanying text.
The red "STOP" warning lamp and acoustic
signal will also be activated.
If there is a less serious fault, the relevant yellow
symbol with the accompanying text will appear on
the screen and an acoustic signal will be audible
for a specific period of time.
Faults
If the indication bar shows several red and yellow
warnings, the other warnings can be viewed by
turning the MCS one step at a time. The
maximum number of warnings in the indication
bar is 9. If there are more than 9 red or yellow
faults, a question mark appears in the bar. All
warnings can be viewed by turning the MCS. The
warnings are shown in order of priority. This
means that the most important warning will be
displayed first.
Serious fault
A red warning symbol is activated when there is a
serious fault.
When a red warning symbol is activated, the red
"STOP" warning symbol in the centre of the DIP-
4 and a continuous acoustic signal are activated
at the same time.
A red warning cannot be removed from the
screen when the engine is running. The red
warning symbol can be turned off when the
engine is not running. This is to allow other menu
options to be used (the warnings re-appear when
you return to the main screen).
The message detailing the number of warnings
present remains active at all times.

Less serious fault

A yellow warning symbol is activated if there is a
less serious fault. A pulsating acoustic signal
which sounds four times is audible.
Yellow warnings can be switched off at any time.
The message detailing the number of warnings
present remains active at all times.
Order of priority
The warning fields can display up to 2 yellow
faults or 1 yellow and 1 red fault. This means an
order of priority has to be employed. If there are
several warnings, they are displayed in order of
3 priority.

3. INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT

3.1 ITEMS REQUIRING SPECIAL ATTENTION WHEN CHECKING THE SYSTEM

1. Faults can easily be traced by making a

through-connection and/or by taking
measurements at the connector.

2. If a reading is specified in the inspection

tables, then a connection must be made
using a multimeter. If no reading is specified,
then a through-connection must be made.

3. Switch the vehicle ignition off before 3

removing or fitting a connector.

4. Carry out measurements on the rear of the

connector. Any through-connection should
also be made on the rear of the connector.
This is to prevent damage to the connectors.

C900084

5. Use a fuse-protected wire when making a

through-connection. 5

6. In the event of a fault, always check the

power and earth connections first. Also
check that the connectors are making good
contact (check for corrosion, etc.).

7. Variations in measurements may mean that

measured values differ slightly from those
specified.

2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
2.1 OPERATION OF MTCO

As it is separate from the speedometer, the

tachograph no longer has to be positioned on the
instrument panel and can be installed anywhere.
The MTCO is not designed as a speedometer,
therefore a separate speedometer is installed in
the DIP-4. The MTCO has the shape and
dimensions of a radio, but still uses conventional
E-tachograph discs. The MTCO forms a single
unit with the electronic speed sensor.
Features:
-
-
-
Recording of driving time
Recording of speed
Fault indication
4
- Automatic de-activation of time group and
distance recording after 25 hours
- Microprocessor-controlled signal sensor
control
- Multi-functional LCD screen
- Timer with backup battery, with automatic
country-dependent summer time
changeover, programmable for 5 years.

The speed signal sensor (F533) is connected to

the MTCO (B525). The MTCO ensures that the
speed signal is available to the DIP-4 via the
V-CAN. Systems that cannot work with CAN,
such as ECAS, receive the speed signal via an
analogue connection.
When the ignition is switched on, the MTCO
display lights up. The following data appears in
the display:
- Date
- Time
- Odometer reading
- Symbol for the fitted tachograph disc
- Current time group setting for drivers 1 and 2

2.2 OPERATION OF VEHICLE SPEED SIGNAL CONVERTER

Vehicles without an MTCO have a vehicle speed

signal converter installed for the speed signal in
the vehicle and the display of time on the
instrument panel.
The time on the instrument panel can be changed
using the '+' and '-' keys.

MTCO
VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95 Description of components

3. DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS
3.1 SPEED SENSOR

The speed sensor has two connections for

outgoing signals. The 'real-time' speed/distance
signal (conventional block signal produced by a
Hall-IC) is sent via one connection. Via the other
connection, a data signal (bi-directional signal) is
sent, which involves an exchange of data
between the MTCO and the speed sensor. The
MTCO requests data from the sensor. The
sensor sends the successive, coded data to the
MTCO, and the MTCO checks that this data is
correct.
The coded data signal consists of the following
data: 4
- sensor serial number;
- master key (the same as that of the MTCO);
- coded speed/distance signal.
In the MTCO, the coded speed signal is
compared with the real-time speed signal.
The MTCO sends commands and data to the
sensor at 10 second intervals.

4. INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT

4.1 ITEMS REQUIRING SPECIAL ATTENTION WHEN CHECKING THE SYSTEM

1. Faults can easily be traced by making a

through-connection and/or by taking
measurements at the connector.

2. If a measured value is specified in the

inspection table, then a connection must be
made using the multimeter. If no measured
value is specified, then a through-connection
must be made.

3. Switch the vehicle ignition off before

removing or fitting a connector.

4. Carry out measurements on the rear of the

4
connector. Any through-connection should
also be made on the rear of the connector.
This is to prevent damage to the connector
connections.

C900084

5. Use a fuse-protected wire when making a

through-connection. 5

6. Always check the power and earth

connections first in the event of a fault. Also
check that the connectors are making good
contact (check for corrosion, etc.).

7. Variations in measurements may mean that

measured values vary slightly from those
specified.

4.2 SET TIME

You can only call up TIME SETTING when the

vehicle is stationary.
You cannot set the time if there is a tachograph
disc in the tachograph. If you try to set the time
while there is a tachograph disc in the
tachograph, the time you set will continue to
flash. The time you set becomes the actual time
as soon as the disc is removed and the tray is
closed.
1. Select the TIME SETTING menu with the
menu button (M).

4 2. Press (+) or (-) to adjust the minutes

forwards or backwards.

3. Confirm the setting by pressing the menu

button (M) again. The standard display
appears again.

Note:
When the tachograph time is changed, the
time displayed on the instrument panel
changes too.

VIC+DIP-4+MTCO CF65/75/85 and XF95 Inspection and adjustment

4.3 SYSTEM INSPECTION, MTCO

The MTCO and vehicle speed signal converter

have one diagnostic connection at the front. This
front connection can be used to calibrate the
tachograph for programming, diagnosis and
calibration with apparatus used by a certified
business. DAVIE uses the CAN connection of the
tachograph for diagnosis. This connection can be
used to trace and rectify faults.
If the MTCO or the vehicle speed signal converter
is replaced, it must be calibrated and
programmed. Programmed values include the K
factor and the PPR factor (the number of pulses
per gearbox output shaft revolution).
If the speed sensor is replaced, the new speed
sensor will need to be matched to the MTCO,
4
otherwise the MTCO will generate an error. The
speed sensor must be matched to the MTCO with
equipment used by a certified business to
calibrate the tachograph.
