Schmidt (1988) defined motor learning as "a set of pro-
cesses associated with practice or experience leading to
relatively permanent changes in the capability for re-
sponding" (p. 346). The relatively permanent change in
behavior is what differentiates learning from temporary
improvements in performance. For example, after prac-
ticing a transfer several times, a patient may remember
how to do it and thus exhibit an improvement in perform-
ance. If the patient cannot remember how to execute the
transfer the next day, however, the task has nOt been
