STUDENT TEACHING EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE (STEP)

STANDARD 1, PART I

Student Teaching Evaluation of Performance (STEP) is the process for preparing and implementing a unit of instruction.

By understanding the community and school environment and the makeup of the classroom, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your
students. In the first two weeks of student teaching, you should focus on learning about the students you will be working with. You are expected to teach the
unit you are preparing by the end of week 8.

Review the geographic, district, and school demographics of your student teaching classroom. Utilize the district or school website, your cooperating
teacher/mentor, or school administrator for this information. You may also use your state Department of Education website for statistical data on community
and school demographics.

Looking at the demographics surrounding the cooperating school where I work and student teach is interesting. Although I previously worked in this school district last year the
climate of the school is different. Fast-forwarding to this school year, after doing some research about the city of Annapolis. I thought it was enlightening to see that the city is
still growing. According to the “World Popular View” website "Annapolis is a city located in Maryland. With a 2020 population of 39,241, it is the 7th largest city in Maryland and
the 1006th largest city in the United States. Annapolis is currently growing at a rate of 0.02% annually and its population has increased by 2.21% since the most recent census,
which recorded a population of 38,394 in 2010." ("Annapolis, Maryland population 2021 (Demographics, maps, graphs)," 2021)

During one of the staff meetings, the principal stated that our school is continuing to grow. Because we are enrolling students daily. In this same meeting the principal explained
to the staff that we have to market ourselves as a school in terms of enrollment. This could have a positive and negative affect on the school’s enrollment. A positive effect is the
surrounding areas of school have received information and want to enroll his/her student in school. Negative effect is families no longer want their students to attend our school
and the enrollment rate declines. So far this has not been the case for our school building this school year.

From what I understand about our school and community, demographics could impact the planning, delivery of assessments on a classroom by classroom basis. Meaning
because I am new to this school I am learning on a day to day basis. It has been brought to my attention when speaking with my cooperating teacher and other teachers in my
department. There are some classes where students and families are participating at a high level and then there are other classes where the level is a medium to lower. Teachers
are doing their best to engage their students and the families with lessons and activities . I think with our country being in the middle of a pandemic things have impacted the

districts.

Our state has been impacted with planning delivery and assessments because tomorrow we are returning back to the classroom for the first time after being in virtually since
last March. There will be some students who will be returning to the school building and there will be some students who will continue virtually. Since this type of teaching has

increasingly resemble teaching in an inner city. "
Finally, enrollments in small towns or rural areas will be flat. But these places will have increasingly large percentages of elderly people. Older residents tend to "age in place,"
and whereas the young move away, some elderly do seek out small-town life.

The article also outlined some tips for teachers to use when looking at the demographics of his/her classroom.

I student-teach in a third grade classroom. Our classroom is diverse classroom. We have mixture of ethnic backgrounds which includes but not limited to Caucasian students,
African American students, and Hispanic/Latino students. When planning delivering and assessing the students. I definitely think about the make up of the students. Whether
students are on grade level, below grade, or above grade level. Knowing this information will help me create, plan and organized my lesson plan better. I must not assume that
all students think, process, retain and learn the same way. So I must be intentional when teaching the students in the classroom. Although I have not given a summative
assessment as of yet. I have been able to witness how students take assessments virtually.

With Monarch Academy Annapolis being a Title 1 school, differentiated instruction is a must along with providing extra support for those students who need it. By planning,
delivering and assessing the students in my classroom through direct instruction and differentiated instruction I am providing a platform where those students are on or below
grade level are receiving the guided support they need to be successful. I am also able to provide those students who are above grade level with the extension lessons/activities
when needed.

Since being in virtual learning our school is completing the I Ready Diagnostic assessments both in mathematics and reading for the past two weeks. The weather has impacted
taking the assessment. " I-Ready Assessment empowers teachers with a deeper knowledge of their students’ needs. I-Ready Assessment suite:
