D. Elaborate

You are on the right track! You learned what

each activity is trying to teach you. That’s great!

This time, read the discussion below and take

note of the important concepts.

Designing of a product is composed of three stages which are planning,

actual design, and construction. The quality of the end product or project depends
on the execution of each stage.

Planning Stage
Before you can accomplish your goals, you need to plan how to reach them.
A work plan makes a clear path to what you want. Along that path will be the
materials, limitations and other factors that need to be identified. When done
properly, your work plan will clearly show and outline the steps needed to achieve
your goal.

Key Steps for Creating a Work Plan

1. Identify the goal for your work plan. The first thing you should do is to know
the goal in advance to be prepared properly. Decide what project you will be
working on over the next defined period.
2. Write a background or introduction. A background or introduction are usually
written for professional business work plans. This part is usually short and
appealing. Emphasized here are the reasons for creating the work plan.
3. Define the objectives. Goals and objectives state what you want to accomplish
through your work plan. Objectives should be concrete and specific. Before
beginning your work plan, consider using SMART goals: This should help you
start right.

https://www.process.st/project-management-steps/
a. Specific – Setting goals to cover who, what, where, when, which and
why
b. Measurable – Making sure that you know how to measure the
progress to and success of a goal
c. Attainable – Lay out how to achieve your most important goals
d. Realistic – Ensure that everyone is willing and able to achieve your
goals
e. Time-based – Making sure that you can meet a schedule in which
you can hit your goals
4. Create a list of your resources. This list should include anything you need to
achieve your goals and objectives. It’s about the materials, books, rooms,
financial budget, and so on.
5. Think about limitations. Here you may identify any difficulty that may get in
the way of achieving your goals and objectives.
6. Define who is accountable. Accountability is an important part of a good plan.
If the project will be done by a group of people, at this stage, you must identify
who is responsible for completing each task. It can be a single team member
or the entire team.
7. Time to move to your strategy. Now look over your work plan and decide how
you’ll reach your goals and objectives by overcoming all constraints.

For simple projects like what you did, the realization greatly depends on
your procedures which must be specific, clear, achievable, and practical. You
must make sure that it is capable of being implemented successfully.

Actual Design Stage

Design is a plan or drawing produced to show the appearance and function
or workings of a building, clothing, or other object before it is built or made. The
term designing the product refers to the determination of shape, standard and
pattern of the product.

You may use the traditional way of

making the actual design of a project
or product like what is shown in the
picture.

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/125397170851718374/A design of a balloon car

With the advancement of technology, sketching software allow users to

create a drawing with digital illustrations. Instead of traditional art supplies such
as paper and pen, designers create drawings on a computer or tablet. SketchUp
AutoCad and Corel Draw to name a few.

Characteristics of a Good Product Design

1. FUNCTION. A product should meet the need of user or its basic function.
2. RELIABILITY. It is the possibility that there will not be any major failure of
the product during its use.
3. MAINTAINABILITY. The product can be easily repaired in case of
malfunctions.
4. SIMPLIFICATION. The simpler the design of the product, the easier it is to
produce, the lesser it costs and more reliable it is.
5. QUALITY. The design of a product should possess features that can meet
consumer needs or wants making them free from any deficiencies or defects.
6. MINIMUM COST. Design influences manufacturing cost. A good product
design must ensure minimum manufacturing cost.

Construction/ Implementation Stage

The actual work stage of designing a project involves the construction process.
During this period, the plan starts happening physically and tangibly. This is often the
most satisfying because work actually gets done but it can also be the most frustrating.
Here are some of the helpful tips when constructing a project.
Always plan ahead. This should be your motto. Plan everything and plan ahead.
You have to start planning way before the actual construction will begin. In addition, you
must review and change your plans until you finish the work. Your planning is what will
make the project a reality.
Communication is the key. Communication is what builds relationships and gets
the work done. You must know how to communicate well. In the case of group projects,
poor project teamwork can lead to mistakes and disagreements amongst team members.
Manage time. Managing time is about staying on top of things, being organized
and ensuring that work is filed correctly every day. You have to prioritize work and issues.
Finish what needs to be done first and then move to the lesser important things. Set
goals and work on them.
Be responsible. Safety has to be the number one priority. Be responsible for your
own safety and the safety of others. Accidents occur in many ways but most often can be
traced back to one of two basic factors: ignorance or carelessness. You must always be
concerned with your own safety and with the safety of others around you.

E. Evaluate
Directions: Design a bag made from various recyclable materials. Your bag must have
enough compartments and can hold your school stuffs.

Amazing effort! You completed all the tasks with

perseverance and diligence. I am hoping that
this module was able to develop the skills you
must learn.

Again, I am Teacher Jho extending my warm

Congratulations!

Remember

1. The plan, design and construction determine the quality of the project.
2. Planning is the framework of any project. It has to be made capable of being
executed successfully.
3. A plan is an outline of what you intend to do, how you intend to do it and by
what date you intend to have it done.
4. Work plan acts as roadmap for the entire project.

5. It is a rare thing that during execution everything happen as planned. Always

have a plan B.
6. For a project, choose a product which is user and environment friendly.
7. The considerations when designing a product include: function, reliability,
maintainability, simplification, quality and minimum cost.
8. The detailed characteristics of a product is established in its design.
9. Safety measures must be a priority in every working place.
