INTRODUCTION
Recycling is one of the best ways to lessen the garbage generated in every
household. Do you know that some of the recycled products still end up in our landfills?
How can you make these products usable, durable and long lasting?
In this module, you will learn how to plan, design and construct a product out of
local, recyclable solid and/or liquid materials in making useful and of high quality
products. Are you up for it? Then, be ready to learn and accomplish the tasks ahead.
Design a product out of local, recyclable solid and/or liquid materials in making
useful product (S5Q1W5- 6)
YOUR PRETEST
Choose one from the three groups of recyclable materials and think of a product
that you can create out of it. Prepare a plan and sketch the project that you want to
make.

Get a bond paper and pencil. Try to sketch the design used to make the house and fence.
II. PRODUCT:
Vegetable Oil Lamp
III. DESCRIPTION:
A lamp using used vegetable oil as fuel and with a container,
wick holder and wick made of recyclable solid materials.
III. MATERIALS:
Used vegetable oil
Glass jar
Wire
Metal cap
Strips of old cloth (length depends on the height of the container)
IV. PROCEDURE:
1. Save the vegetable oil in a jar after frying. Let it cool, filter it through a
cloth.
2. Braid the strips of old cloth. Soak it in water with salt and let it dry.
3. Using a hammer and nail, poke a hole through a metal bottle cap. Put
the wick through the hole in the bottle cap. Twist the wire to make a
holder for bottle cap. Put the cap in place.
3. Put the used vegetable oil in the glass jar and fix the wick holder in it.
Activity 1: 5Rs
What to do: Develop a plan in making a useful product out of local, recyclable
solid/ and/ or liquid materials. Your plan should include the following details.
II. PRODUCT: (What product can you make out of recycling which will be useful
to you and your family? Think of a name for it.)

III. DESCRIPTION: (What will be its uses? How will it look like?
_________________________________________________________

III. TIME ALLOTMENT: (time for the construction of the product)
180 minutes
IV. MATERIALS: (List the materials you will need. Remember that the materials
must be environment- friendly recyclable solids and/or liquids and available
inside your house.)
V. PROCEDURE: (Write the step by step procedure on how you will make the
product. Remember to make it simple and workable.)

2.
Questions Yes No
1. Is the product realistic?
2. Will the product be useful?
3. Are the materials local and recyclable?
4. Are the materials cost-effective?

1. Prepare all the materials needed before starting your work. Make sure the tools
are in good condition.
2. Wear specific personal safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, and aprons.
3. Keep your mind on your work. People who let their attention wander are a
hazard to themselves and others around them.
4. Don’t fool around. Playing is one of the biggest causes of injuries.
5. Clean your work area once you are done.

D. Elaborate
Planning Stage
Before you can accomplish your goals, you need to plan how to reach them.
A work plan makes a clear path to what you want. Along that path will be the
materials, limitations and other factors that need to be identified. When done
properly, your work plan will clearly show and outline the steps needed to achieve
your goal.
https://www.process.st/project-management-steps/
a. Specific – Setting goals to cover who, what, where, when, which and
why
b. Measurable – Making sure that you know how to measure the
progress to and success of a goal
c. Attainable – Lay out how to achieve your most important goals
d. Realistic – Ensure that everyone is willing and able to achieve your
goals
e. Time-based – Making sure that you can meet a schedule in which
you can hit your goals
4. Create a list of your resources. This list should include anything you need to
achieve your goals and objectives. It’s about the materials, books, rooms,
financial budget, and so on.
5. Think about limitations. Here you may identify any difficulty that may get in
the way of achieving your goals and objectives.
6. Define who is accountable. Accountability is an important part of a good plan.
If the project will be done by a group of people, at this stage, you must identify
who is responsible for completing each task. It can be a single team member
or the entire team.
7. Time to move to your strategy. Now look over your work plan and decide how
you’ll reach your goals and objectives by overcoming all constraints.
For simple projects like what you did, the realization greatly depends on
your procedures which must be specific, clear, achievable, and practical. You
must make sure that it is capable of being implemented successfully.
E. Evaluate
Directions: Design a bag made from various recyclable materials. Your bag must have
enough compartments and can hold your school stuffs.
Remember
1. The plan, design and construction determine the quality of the project.
2. Planning is the framework of any project. It has to be made capable of being
executed successfully.
3. A plan is an outline of what you intend to do, how you intend to do it and by
what date you intend to have it done.
4. Work plan acts as roadmap for the entire project.

YOUR POSTTEST
Directions: Think of a product that you can make out of the following materials: 1.)
metallic cups; 2.) medium sized tin can; 3.) yarn; 4.) scotch tape; 5.) pair of scissors; and
6.) coloring materials. Make a plan and actual design of your product. Be able to
construct your product afterwards.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
Directions: The following are recycling project titles. Choose one depending on the
available materials you have at home, and design a product suggested by the title you
chose.
1. Old crayons to new ones
2. Old clothes to quilt
3. What can I recycle?
4. Bird feeders from a bottle
5. Chime the wind
