Term 3 Task 4 A: TASK: Research Assignment - Research Component - Environmental Change
Conditions
Period allowed for completion of the task: two weeks, including some class time
Task (High light only the key points for your research topic).
This research project gives you the opportunity to use and develop your geographical thinking, skills
and technological tools to examine some environmental change that may affect their future lives,
and to find out how geography contributes to the understanding and management of these changes.
Apply the geographical concepts (SPICESS) to identify and question, guide your investigation,
organize information, suggest an explanation or assist decision-making.

As part of your research you need to use all of these, web sites, textbooks, books, encyclopaedias and
documentaries. These sources must be recorded accurately in your bibliography.
Topic
Select one of the following types of environments as the context for a comparative study of an
environmental change for Australia and one other country:
§ land
§ inland water
§ coast
§ marine
§ urban
Investigate:
§ The causes and likely consequences of environmental change
§ The strategies to manage the environmental change
§ The application of environmental, economic and social criteria in evaluating management
responses to the change

Construct a vocabulary sheet identifying geographical terms and concepts as you study your topic

Develop literal, inferential and evaluative questions to guide your research
Use a range of methods to select, collect, record and organise your research notes
Using multiple sources when note taking
Properly constructed bibliography - Use appropriate ethical protocols and acknowledging other
people's information that you have used. You do this by in text and end text referencing.
You must apply the CRAAP TEST to FOUR different sources you are using in your research.
Gain information from a range of primary and secondary sources and use it as evidence to answer
inquiry questions.
Use the primary and secondary source analysis sheet to deconstruct your sources examine sources
to compare different points of view. Annotate the sources.
How useful are these sources, what was their origin and purpose.
Develop a comprehensive mind map on your topic. (You should be able to see the answer to your
topic in your mind map!)
