Ecology Walk Worksheet

Name: Jia L. Reas Date: February 10, 2021

1. Look at the environment around you and name at least 5 different biotic things
 Plants
 Animals
 Trees
 Fishes
 Bacteria

2. Look at the environment around you and name at least 3 different abiotic things.
 Sunlight
 Soil
 Water

3. If there is a pond, lake or small bodies of water around you, would you say that small bodies of
water an ecosystem? If yes, why do you think so? If no, why not?
In my perspective, yes. Small bodies of water, including ponds and small lakes, streams and
springs might often be overlooked, but there is increasing concurrence that this has a vital role in our
ecosystem and extremely important to the ecological health of the landscape. Given their richness in
many landscapes, small bodies of water are likely to play an important role in ecosystem services,
including moderating pollution control and carbon cycling, providing small scale water supply, and
aiding healthy fisheries. Oftentimes, it is recognized as a vital habitat for freshwater plants and animals
in our environment.

4. How do humans have an impact on this area?

Human beings have an impact on small bodies of water. The relationship living organisms have
particularly humans and with their environment is extremely complex. It is highlighted that the
ecosystems with which we interact are directly connected to the well-being of our natural water
resources such as small bodies of water. Taking water, creating diversions, and using land are human
activities that influence water flows. We use water for farming, power generation, drinking water, and
industry. In some instances, our activities provide benefits in addition to the supply of water create new
recreation opportunities.
5. What might this area look like in 10 years with no human interference?
For me if there is no human interference in 10 years, small bodies of water will become less
polluted and many creatures will flourish. Since pollution is difficult to control because it is often the
result of human infrastructure around the small bodies of water. Small bodies of water would again carry
nutrients seaward, where most life would be, as it was long before sea creatures crawled onto the shore.

6. My Personal Reflection: (in 3 to 5 sentences your insights and takeaways after doing this activity)
After doing this activity I realized that sometimes humans tend to overlook the things in their
surroundings. And because of that many human actions affect what people value. And for me, there are
plenty of tiny steps we can take that really will matter. Such as going outside, observing our
environment, planting some trees. These little things will motivate all of us to make necessary changes
for our planet and as well as our environment
