• Essential Question: Dig deeper into two languages: Old English and Old Chinese
What is the background of Old English and Old Chinese?
How does history influence the two modern languages?
How do the differences between the two languages arise?

• Foundational Learning:
I will do plenty of research to learn about the detailed history of the two languages, which will help me
be familiar with the use of the two ancient languages and the formation of their characters. As I
confirmed my mentor, Dr. A had suggested a helpful English book to me for gaining professional
knowledge of ancient English. Plus, I will also make an appointment with Dr. A to further discuss the
two languages.

• Final Product:
I plan to create a website that I make entirely by myself. I will set a website name and decorate the
pages. It is boring to learn a language, and so is the ancient language, thereby hoping that my final
product will not only interest the audience but provide professional information as well. Therefore, I
will try my best to sum up the essence of knowledge and put these contents on the website. I think Dr.
A will give me feedback on my initial content.

Goals- New Learning and Skills You Hope to Gain:

-narrow down the process of creating a website
-efficient use the time in the off-school week
-do more research, at least three
-make appointments with Dr. A and communicate about my process and receive some feedbacks

Remaining questions, logistics or planning, if any:

-To check with Dr. A whether all the research I did has professional and authoritative knowledge or not.
-I need to figure out the overall plan and daily schedules for the first week of Feb.

Experiential Learning Description Fully describe the work (with mentor, during mentorship week, working
on your own, etc) to be done, list all 10 days and hours, transportation, other important info):

Since I am currently outside the U.S and have the time difference for 13 hours earlier Eastern Time, I change
my main working time to the afternoon, and I will meet with my mentor in the evening.

Day 1: Preparation and plans. Due to the sources in my presentations not meeting the requirements, I will first
do three more research. And then, starting the arrangements for my final product. I will split it into three
gateways: for kids, English-speakers, and Chinese-speakers. (Original plans may change; 4 hrs) In the evening,
around 8-9 pm, I will have a meeting for 1-1.5 hrs. Talking about the problems & improvements, plan for the
final product, etc. I will summarize today’s work, make conclusions, and prepare for the next day’s work. (1 h;
Total hours for the day= 6-6.5hrs)

Day 2: Start and finish the website design. I hope my webpage design will meet my satisfaction and no need
to redo it later. Again, I will write down space for improvements, summarize for the day’s work, and prepare
for next day’s work. (Total hours for the day= 5hrs; Work on my own)

Day 3: Finish Chinese and English history & English Grammar. In the afternoon, I will start with filling the
information and see if there's anything that I would like to change. Then I recheck my information on the
website. Again, I will write down space for improvements, summarize the day’s work, and prepare for the next
day’s work. Also, I will learn from other historical websites. (Total hours for the day= 5hrs; No meeting with my
mentor today)

Day 4: Finish the Last Chinese Grammar part. Again, I will start with filling the information in the afternoon.
Also, I will pick pictures that I need to put on the website. I will start to make the kid’s gateway part. (5 hrs)
Also, I will meet my mentor today and share my progress and problems. (1-1.5 hrs) I will write down space for
improvements, summarize for the discussion, and make conclusions. (1 h; Total hours for the day= 7-7.5hrs)

Day 5: I will finish all the parts, check all the designs and pictures, and add all the citations in another page.
Maybe add some animations there. (5hrs) I will meet my mentor today and show my completed final product.
(1-1.5 hrs) Again, I will summarize for the discussion, make conclusions, and make the final changes. (1 h;
Total hours for the day= 7-7.5hrs)

(Total hours: at least 30 hrs)

Daily Flight Plan & Log

Day 1 Plan: Preparation and plans. Due to the sources in my presentations not meeting the requirements, I
will first do three more research. And then, starting the arrangements for my final product. I will split it into
three gateways: for kids, English-speakers, and Chinese-speakers. (Original plans may change; 4 hrs) In the

Day 1 Log:
Date: Feb 2, 2021
Total Hours: 6 hours
Description of the Day (activities, hours/activities, progress on your product, etc):
8:00am Started editing the website layout. I picked an educational template from the website maker WIX. I
began with modifying the background, title, and main manu. And then edited the switch pages.
9:30am Had a meeting with my mentor. We talked about my entire plan for this week and discussed the
comparison of the old two languages. We further discussed the grammar, especially genders, strong and
weak verbs, and influence from forgien languages.
10:50am Ended the first meeting with Dr.A. It was great. I enjoyed talking with my mentor, which I learned a
lot and enlarged my base of knowledge via our discussions.
10:50am-11:00am Took a short break and went back to work on the website.
11:00am Concluded today’s work. Reviewed and wrote down conclusion notes of the discussion.
12:00pm-2:00pm Revised the website page for a better design that fits my topic-- old languages. Also, I
edited my theme’s colors and finally confirmed the theme's color.

Day 2 Plan: Start and finish the website design. I hope my webpage design will meet my satisfaction and no
need to redo it later. Again, I will write down space for improvements, summarize for the day’s work, and
prepare for next day’s work. (Total hours for the day= 5hrs; Work on my own)

Day 2 Log:
Date: Feb 3, 2021
Total Hours: 6 hours
Description of the Day (activities, hours/activities, progress on your product, etc):
8:00am Review yesterday’s design, and made important changes on small details for a feel of
harmonization, like background saturability, front, animation, and title size.
8:45am-9:10am I had a meeting with my school teacher. Took off from the project.
9:30am Continued working. I edited on page transitions and made more customized designs. More on that,
I referred to some historical websites, especially paid attention to the theme color and overall harmonization,
for reaching a better visual effect on my website.
10:30am Making sure the design is eligible for putting texts. I started working on the home page. I felt lost
and confused on what I should put, so I first collected some pictures that I was going to put on the main
pages. After consideration while I was finding the picture, I decided to put the home page aside first because I
wanted efficiency.
11:30am I turned to edit the brief history page. My main idea is that the content should be readable and
simple to ensure both adults and kids can understand.
1:00pm-1:30pm Took a short break and had some snacks. Today, I intended to have a meeting with my
mentor, but we couldn’t make it. Also, I am going to take part in a math competition on Thursday so I
scheduled another time with him.
1:30pm-2:30pm Made conclusions. I found out that there was a zoom out mode that I could review the
whole page design. I decided and reminded myself to use that mood more often for finding out shortages of
all sections at once.

Day 3 Plan: Finish Chinese and English history & English Grammar.

Day 3 Log:
Date: Feb 4, 2021
Total Hours: 6 hours
Description of the Day (activities, hours/activities, progress on your product, etc):
7am Started with reviewing yesterday’s work and checked for errors in paragraphs and layouts. I found I
did a good job yesterday. And then, I planned for today’s schedule and looked up my email to make sure we
scheduled meetings earlier.
8:00am- 10:00am I attended a math competition.
10:30am Started working. First, I was going to finish the main page first. I wrote down a draft note that I
was going to put on the website, and found pictures that I would need to put besides my paragraphs.
12:30pm Edited the complex designs-- overlapping, animation, hover interactions, picture putting,
buttons, shapes, and text boxes.
1:30pm Take a short break.
2:00pm I decided to make a change on the content. Originally, I intended to put my personal information
and the purpose of the website on the Home Page. Instead of doing it, I added a sub-page to put on the
information that I initially wanted to put. After making the change, I started to think of what I should put on
the Home Page. I still found it difficult, so I decided to put it aside and ask some suggestions from my mentor
because the Home Page meant extremely important. It directly relates to people’s attention and desire for
reading.
3:00 pm--4:00pm Collected the information and started working on the grammar sections. By doing so, it
would help me to make a deeper discussion with my mentor.

Day 4 Plan: Day 4: Finish the Last Chinese Grammar part. Again, I will start with filling the information in the
afternoon. Also, I will pick pictures that I need to put on the website. I will start to make the kid’s gateway
part. (5 hrs) Also, I will meet my mentor today and share my progress and problems. (1-1.5 hrs) I will write
down space for improvements, summarize for the discussion, and make conclusions. (1 h; Total hours for the
day= 7-7.5hrs)

Day 4 Log:
Date: Feb 5, 2021
Total Hours: 7 hours
Description of the Day (activities, hours/activities, progress on your product, etc):

8:00am Started reviewing yesterday’s work and made little improvements on the design and corrected mistakes in
the paragraphs.
9:00am Made a plan for today, and started today’s scheduled work. I changed all the designs from English-speaker to
two sections-- Old English and Old Chinese. I added four sub-pages on the design. History, Grammar, Writings, and
Dialects/Main concepts.
10:00am-12:00pm Collected info and edited the content on the Dialect page and Chinese history page.
12:00pm Had a short break.
12:35 pm-1:00pm Had a meeting with my mentor. Since my mentor had to meet with another student, I only met
with him half of the blocks. Although we had a short discussion, I made huge progress on my website, especially the
home page. We talked about the next step of my product, how the Old English literature worked, and how to deal with
the Home Page. I am going to make a “hook” that is going to be put on the homepage to attract people’s attention.
1:00pm-3:00pm Continued editing my pages. Especially worked on the pictures and designs. Managed the picture
sources by the media window.
3:30pm-4:00pm Reviewed today’s work, adjusted changes, and concluded the notes with my mentor.
Day 5 Plan: I will finish all the parts, check all the designs and pictures, and add all the citations in another
page. Maybe add some animations there. (5hrs) I will meet my mentor today and show my completed final
product. (1-1.5 hrs) Again, I will summarize for the discussion, make conclusions, and make the final changes.
(1 h; Total hours for the day= 7-7.5hrs)

Day 5 Log:
Date: Feb 6, 2021
Total Hours: 5.5 hours
Description of the Day (activities, hours/activities, progress on your product, etc):

8:00am Reviewed yesterday’s work and saw any space for improvement.
8:30am Planned for today's work and began doing it. Continued working on the content. Collected
pictures on both Google and Chinese chromes to find suitable and reliable pictures. While putting the
pictures on the website, I managed the resources.
10:30am Had a short break.
11:00am-12:30pm I was still working on the content. I reviewed the history and dialects pages, and I found
that the content was not detailed enough. I continued searching for resources, and did my best to fulfill more
information.
12:30pm-1:30pm Had a break.
1:30pm--3:00pm Continued editing the history page. Included Before English, Proto-Indo-Europeans, Julius Caesar,
and shifts to Old English. I decided to edit a timeline of Old English sections. Additionally, I worked on the Chinese
History section, including the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty.

WEEK 1 REFLECTION Please write a summary of what you have learned and the skills you have
acquired, successes and challenges, progress on product and revised plans for Week 2:
I learned how the Old English was originated from other foreign languages, such as Latin and Germany,
via meetings with my mentor. I succeeded in making a great design for my final products and worked
on editing the contents of several pages. My challenges were no idea of the homepage’s content and
less time meeting with my mentor and working on my website. However, I still have two months to
finish my product and meet with my mentor. In conclusion, I really enjoyed this week-- talked to my
mentor, learnt new knowledge, and used that knowledge on my product. Although I just started the
long-term process, I made a great start and received a somewhat sense of achievement.
